Udupi, Jan 2: “We are planning to provide houses to a hundred people belonging to economically weaker sections of the society, those who are weak and do not own any sites, with the help of philanthropists”, said Pramod Madhwaraj, minister of fisheries, youth empowerment and sports.

He was speaking after inaugurating the house of Sulochana Chandu Poojary on Monday January 1, which was constructed with the help of donors at Moodabettu here. “Houses are being constructed at a cost of Rs 1.5 lac each through people who run construction business, by convincing them to get involved with charity. This plan is meant for the poor people who are unable to reap benefits of facilities under different government schemes, and who do not own any land or sites,” he said.

The minister congratulated the donors for providing security to the lives of poor people and making their dreams come true. “We intend to construct a total of one hundred houses, out of which 80 have already been handed over to the needy. The construction of remaining twenty houses is in progress. It will be completed before February this year,” he said.

The minister inaugurated five houses including the house of Vasanthi Nayak in Laxmi Nagar, Jayanthi Dinesh, Malathi Raghu Karkera near Garadi and Sudha B Madiwala at Ambalpadi, Nairkere, on Monday.

Udupi city municipal president Meenakshi Madhava Bannanje, vice president, Sandhya, councillor, Ganesh Nergi, municipal commissioner, Manjunathayya, as well as donors, Karthik Shetty and others were present.
