M'luru: 'Research Avenues in Computer Vision' workshop held at P A Engineering College

Mangaluru, Dec 27: The department of computer science and engineering, P A College of Engineering, here on December 21 organized an international workshop on 'Research Avenues in Computer Vision'.

The inauguration of the workshop was held at 10.30 am at the multi-purpose hall and the inaugural ceremony was presided over by the principal, Dr Abdul Sharief. Other dignitaries present on the occasion were professor, department of computational mathematics and cybernetics, Moscow State University, Moscow, Russia, Prof Leonid Mestetskiy; associate professor, department of computational mathematics and cybernetics, Moscow State University, Moscow, Russia, Dr Archil I Maisuradze; professor, department of computer science, Mangalore University, Dr B H Shekar; director (academics), Prof Surfaraz Hasim J; and coordinator of the workshop and HOD C S & E Dr Sharmila Kumari.

The keynote speech was delivered by Prof Leonid Mestetskiy on 'Continuous morphology for computer vision applications'. He explicitly described the importance of computational geometry to represent image datasets and various applications such as biometric, gait recognition, fall detection, shape analysis etc. Dr Archil discussed the avenues for research in data mining areas and explored the applications of computational mathematics for many data analytics problems.

Dr B H Shekar presented the 'Role of local descriptors for computer vision applications' and also provided hands on experience on many state of the art computer vision applications using Matlab tool.

The faculty/students showd their enthusiasm and actively participated in the entire workshop and solved the assignments. Their feedback was overwhelming. The concluding remarks were made by Dr Sharmila Kumari who gave an overall idea of integrating project works as part of research work.

Dr Palakshappa, HOD, department of civil engineering proposed the vote of thanks and Prof Ganesh Pai was the Master of Ceremony.
