'Rashtrabhakti' drove us to help people of all faiths: PM Modi

Ahmedabad, Dec 4 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said "rashtrabhakti" motivated him and his government to help people of various faiths, including Christians, and dubbed as "fatwa" a letter issued by Gandhinagar archbishop.

The prime minister was referring to the letter issued last month by Thomas Macwan, archbishop of the Archdiocese of Gandhinagar, in which he had appealed to Christians to pray to save the country from "nationalist forces".

"I was shocked to see a religious person releasing a 'fatwa' (diktat) saying uproot the nationalist forces. It is 'Rashtrabhakti' (nationalism) that guides us to help every Indian in any part of the world," Modi said.

The prime minister was speaking at a gathering after inaugurating a hospital on the campus of Shree Swaminarayan Gurukul Vishwavidya Pratisthanam (SGVP).

He said it was a "matter of concern" if some people are opposing such values.

The priest had also said that "democratic fabric" of the country was at stake amidst growing "sense of insecurity" among minorities, which was viewed as a jibe at the ruling BJP.

Modi said his government had saved and rescued people of different faiths irrespective of their religion.

He also listed several examples wherein the central government had brought back Christian missionaries as well as nurses stranded in conflict zones across the world.

"Along with Indians, we have rescued citizens of almost 40 countries from Yemen, as they were stranded there due to war. We did not see their religion or language they speak. It was our nationalism and humanitarian values which guided us," the prime minister said.

Modi said he was raising the issue of nationalism because some people have challenged it.

"Our nurses from Kerala, mostly Christians, were stranded in Iraq. They were in the custody of terrorists. Can the prime minister or any citizen of India sleep in such situation, when our daughters are in custody of terrorists?" he asked.

In 2014, a total of 46 Indian nurses, who were held captive by the Islamic State militants in Iraq for about a month, were evacuated after the successful intervention by the Union government.

The prime minister also recalled how his government used "all resources" to bring back Keralite priest Tom Uzhunnalil who was freed after being kept in captivity suspectedly by the ISIS for 18 months in strife-torn Yemen.

"Father Tom (Uzhunnalil), also a Keralite, was abducted by terrorists in Yemen last year. He went there to spread the message of Jesus Christ. Again, we have employed all our resources to bring him back, as he is the son of this country. We successfully brought him back a few months back," the prime minister said.

He also gave the example of Father Alexis Prem Kumar who was rescued from the Taliban captivity in Afghanistan.

"Another Christian, Judith D'Souza of West Bengal, was kidnapped in Afghanistan. We applied every trick in the book and brought her back alive, that too from the clutches of terrorists. We were able to do all these humanitarian work because of our rashtrabhakti," he said.

What a joke? When the minorities were killed in the name of religion, where his deshbhakti was hiding? Why he was so dumb that he did not utter a word against such goons.

Let me remind blind Modi that Archbishop is a citizen of India first, and has all the right to exercise his fundamental rights guaranteed by the Indian constitution.

Any one infringes the rights of fellow citizens himself is a traitor in the first place.

Archbishop didn't say vote for this party or that party. He has cautioned against the nation falling into oblivion, which is tragic.

Ok, would you be gracious enough to Accord the same fundamental right to speech to Modi? Arch Bishop said what he felt, Modi said what he felt. Leave it at that, because this is all elections gimmick just like our newly crowned janeu dhari who is on temple spree in Gujarat and not uttering a word about 2002 while last 15 all they did was harp on 2002. Time time ki baat. Now, there is nothing wrong in Wondering why nationalists are to be defeated when being nationalistic and putting nation first is a matter of pride.

How does Bishop's call to uproot nationalist forces is hurting BJP when Archbishop never mentioned any party or organization's name ? Why did not it hurt any other political party ? It means their conscience knows what they are doing. Is it wrong for a leader to guide his followers without mentioning any party's name ? Bishop may be referring to some other party as well. Why BJP has to conclude that Archbishop is referring BJP ? Kallana manssu hullullage ? I would like to ask Modiji to give a single instance how they have helped Christians ? Christians apart, can he give an instance where they have helped dalits (Hindus) ? My dear sir, Rashtrabhakti is not lynching fellow Indian but building akhand bharat taking along every Indian irrespective of their religion and faith.

It is surprising that such a hue and cry is made about the letter issued by the Archbishop. The Bishops usuallly issue regular ciruculars to their devotees guiding them over various topics including their responsibility towards the nation. The Christians have no objection to this and this does not take away their freedom to vote for any party that they want. The letter issued by the Archbishop creates some confusion with regard to the word "nationalists" which refers to fanatics and not those who belong to any party. Fanatics may be there in any party or they could be even contest polls as independents. The Bishop in his interview has clarified his position saying that he did not refer to any party. The negative reactions to the letter create the impression whether we have lost the right to express our veiews. Let us not meddle in troubled waters but try to see things in proper perspective.

    Mahesh,

In Ghorakpur, one independent candidate yesterday said she voted for herself but the party registered 0 votes. Where might hers and of those who voted for her may have gone ? Electronic era introduced by BJP has come with some inbuilt default system. Can't be any other explanation.

Therefore, whether Himachal voting is over, or not, results out or not, you can start celebrating.

Mahesh, I am sure Congress will get big zero. As we have seen earlier how the EVMs are tampered and all votes goes to only one 'Rashtrabhakti' party. Google and see 19 EC members along with governor of MP is suspended for tampering EVMs. Kursi ke liye vote chori ?

Father Tom was rescued after Oman King sultan Qaboos negotiated with Yemeni officials after the request of Pope from Vatican. If we can remember Father Tom first landed in Muscat after release then left to Vatican to thank Pope. Then he returned to India. Indian govt cannot claim it as their achievement.

When people of all faiths are in mind, the government doesn't go about imposing nationwide beef ban. It encourages people who believe in gau-worship to buy more cows, look after them. Than sending their unemployed young men after those who transport cattle sold by those in need of doing so.

Go out and call on unemployed youth to work in gau-shaalas (if they don't want to keep a cow at home) thus serve the gau-maatha. Check how many loyal Hindu unemployed youth will listen to you ! None !
