Video of Maharashtra minister peeing on roadside goes viral, NCP takes dig

Mumbai, Nov 20 (PTI): Maharashtra Minister Ram Shinde has landed himself in a controversy after a video clip purportedly showing him urinating on the roadside surfaced on social media.

The incident occurred on a stretch of the Solapur-Barshi road when the water conservation minister was travelling in his car.

When contacted, Shinde told PTI that he urinated in the open as he was feeling ill after touring the state nearly a month for the government's flagship Jalyukta Shivar scheme.

"I have been travelling continuously for the last one month reviewing the Jalyukta Shivar scheme. Continuous travelling in high temperatures and dust made me ill.

"I was suffering from fever and when I couldn't find a toilet while travelling, I had to relieve myself in the open," he said.

However, the opposition NCP said the minister not finding a toilet on a highway shows that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has failed.

"It is now proved that the government has been looting people in the name of Swachh Bharat cess on petrol and diesel," NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik said.

"If the minister did not find a toilet on a highway, it means the government has all along been looting people in the name of Swacch Bharat cess on fuel. The minister has proved that the whole scheme is nothing but a big failure," Malik said.

@Jenifer- I think govt providing subsidies to build toilets at individual homes. Both rural and city.

Building roadside toilet is the responsibility of local village panchayath and city municipality.

Why this hypocrisy ? Building toilets took place in the village too. But Minister's urinating in the open OK if its outskirts ? Going by your say, toilets in areas outside city were not at all a necessity. Then, why so much money was wasted to build toilets ? And boasted to the world that BJP brought a change to people's relieving habits ? Something that no other governments in the past did ?

Paying taxes no problem but not to use for Cow sheds. Taxes collected should be used for human benefits and with high priority. Those who are so sympathetic let them contribute generaously but not from State treasure nor from tax collected.

Everybody is NOT BJP MINISTER to be doing it openly as you said. A Minister of a particular party should have some self restraint because his government has made it a policy for the nation to make the habitat clean. And, each and every earlier PM did not make 'Toilet Building plan' speech on the first Independence day of his government's coming to power.

Either understand that urinating/defecating is a natural process beyond a human's control or, stop boasting that BJP managed to make the entire nation SWACHCH. People who openly defecated since their ancestors' time can't take up modern practices just because somebody has announced governance with a difference that too difference to urinating/defecating habits.

We cannot control rains and natures call. More one would try to control harder we are pushed to release. Especially, when we travel long distanaces and with people who are diabetic. There should be some limit to make fun of others.

This is called blowing issue out of proportion.
    What congress did after independence?
London had good toilets before 1947.
What was the situation in Mumbai during 1960s?
Nehru didn't build single toilet, not even Indira Gandhi.
    They travelled abroad for studies.
They didn't bring good things for India.
At least current PM realised mistakes.
So pay tax and build new toilet 🚽

sri-elder,karkala,it looks like you try each time about congress to crisize.Think first to build a toilet at Nehrus time or Indira ,it was a very hard time due to wars, and powerty.Even now no toilets in many part of india with all promises of this or other ministers.Noone takes interst to realize.Promises are big. That time not many people could afford even a meal.I know how hard it was.and you are talking of toilets building.I think this minister could instead of going on road side ,sould have gone to a house somewhere or a hotel previously .If at all had done on road side ,consider it as one time mistake.shouldnt make a big issue.

What a mean mentality of the people who capture such incidents and spread to make an issue. Shameless.
Remember that, whenever we travel long distance and also with diabetic patience urine is irregular and the frequency is vary rapid.
We cannot stop or gurantee two things:-
Rains falling down and natures call. (more we try to suppress, harder we are pushed down)

Instead of giving crores of worth the land to Baba Ramdev and the Dream-girl MP, Maharashtra should have put it for sale to genuine buyers thus increasing the state revenue.

You should not beg for taxes from salaried people while making a selected unworthy few richer !

Both the minister as well as the opposition seem to be right. As far as the former is concerned, what could he do in the absence of the toilets? He had to relieve himself and see where he is doing it. He has gone to some corner to urinate. That's understandable. And as far as the opposition is concerned, they are also justified in their criticism. When the government is collecting swatch Bharath cess, it is incumbent on them on provide toilets on the way especially on the highways. We have only been paying swatch Bharath taxes but the situation as far as hygiene and cleanliness is concerned, there has been no improvement. At least so far. The country continues to remain dirty and filthy.

pity on this country. if some leader initiate some good initiative... classic example if this, Swatch Bharath. Then there are jokers who will keep questioning "minister not finding a toilet on a highway shows the failure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Swachh Bharat Abhiyan". shame on you. If it's failed, it's you are also responsible. You are also in power for years , in many places. could you implement something like this... No. yek mauka mila tho started barking... I am not justifying minister's misbehave. Yes, it's condemnable. But doesn't make the initiate a shame by speaking nasty. your Congress is saying we did this that... for decades... question them why o proper Toilets in all the place... they will be able to answer this question.
