Saudi Arabia approves yoga as a sports activity

NEW DELHI, Nov 14 (PTI): The Saudi Arabian Ministry of Commerce and Industry this week approved the practice of yoga as a sports activity, according to a social media post of Nouf Marwaai, the kingdom's first woman yoga instructor.

The approval will enable anyone to get a yoga centre/studio license and start teaching yoga as a sports service under the head of business activity.

The news of the approval was made public by Saudi Arabia's first woman yoga instructor, Nouf Marwaai. In a November 10 post on Facebook, she announced that the ministry has granted approval to practice yoga within the country.

Alluding India as "the land of the yoga," Marwaai acknowledged the support she received from the Indian government, the Consulate General in Saudi Arabia and the people of India.

Late on Tuesday, yoga guru Swami Ramdev appreciated the decision taken by the Saudi government.

In the recent past, Saudi Arabia, known for implementing a strict interpretation of Islam, has been in the news for charting a new modern course for the country.

Since catapulting to power with the support of his father, the king, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has pushed forth changes that could usher in a new era for one of the United States' most important allies and swing the kingdom away from decades of ultraconservative dogma and restrictions. He's introduced musical concerts and movies again and is seen as the force behind the king's decision to grant women the right to drive as of next year.

Opposition to the changes has so far been muted, but some critics of the prince have been detained. When social openings in the kingdom were taking place four decades ago, Sunni extremists opposed to the monarchy laid siege to Islam's holiest site in Mecca.

Prince Mohammed's agenda is upending the ruling Al Saud's longstanding alliance with the kingdom's clerical establishment in favor of synchronizing with a more cosmopolitan, global capitalism that appeals to international investors and maybe even non-Muslim tourists.

The prince grabbed headlines in recent days by vowing a return to "moderate Islam." He also suggested that his father's generation had steered the country down a problematic path and that it was time to "get rid of it."
In his sweeping "Vision 2030" plan to wean Saudi Arabia off of its near total dependence on petrodollars, Prince Mohammed laid out a vision for "a tolerant country with Islam as its constitution and moderation as its method."

Prince Mohammed, or MBS as he is widely known, used a rare public appearance on stage at a major investor conference in the capital, Riyadh, this week to drive home that message to a global audience.

"We only want to go back to what we were: Moderate Islam that is open to the world, open to all religions," he said in the ornate grand hall of the Ritz-Carlton. "We will not waste 30 years of our lives in dealing with extremist ideas. We will destroy them today."

Saudi Arabia the custodian of the most holy mosques in Islam can approve Yoga as a sport and can be practiced by Saudi muslims, and some clerics in India call to boycott it as un-islamic? Wah re Wah!!! Now I wonder which country is containing more extremists? As per my understanding even Afghanistan and Pak (the hotbed of extremism) have no objections to yoga but in India......people are issue Fatwa against it? So where is our country heading to?

    Dear Mohammed, Kundapur,

Nobody condemned or praised the country in the past. India has had very good relations with Saudi. Many Indians are employed in KSA irrespective of religion, It was only some Mullahs , Maulvis and some Indians who equated themselves with the SA on the basis of religion. Now that SA is changing for the better and their ' good scholar on the run' Zakir Naik was denied reisdence status. Its a big slap on their face. So its a big burnol moment, thats all.

Apparently they are sick of being confined to age old , Medival way of life. Hence our good old terrorist inciter Zakir Naik's residence status request was rejected and he had to flee to Malaysia. Will we see a Fatwa being issued by our Maulvis and Mullahs.? They dare not.

Yoga and exercise are not the same.
Yoga Enhances Energy Levels of body where as exercises reduces the energy.
Energy is needed by the body for doing any mental or physical activity..
The body gets energized with yoga practice and regular meditation.
According to Yoga human body have 7 energy centers .
By doing Yoga and meditation one can activate the higher energy centers which is normally not activated by default.

Why a practicing muslim require yoga. Five times prayer a day is much better than that. Yoga itself is not haram but any touch of idol worship is purely haram. Most of the saudis not aware of the idol worship practice in india is connected with worldly aspect. Tomarrow by showing saudi example the modi bhajan team may try to push any nonsensual practice into islamic shariah institutions. Indian practicing muslims must be aware of that. AS PROPHET TOLD IN HADEES THAT WHOEVEVER IMITATES OTHER THEY BELONG TO THEM. Saudi arabia needs modis help in purchasing petrol bulk to weaken iranian influence which sanghi leaders actually planned before .Hence saudi rulers presented modi peace price two years back. IMAGINE WHEN INDIAN SUPREME COURT CALLS SOMEBODY NERO WHO BECOME PEACE PRIZE HOLDER OF SAUDI RULER. is it not a joke.

Yoga is good, but gym coupled with swimming is the best. I've been using treadmill almost on a daily basis for the past 4 years at max speed/inclination mode of 7mph/7 for almost 30 minutes & gym bike for almost an hour at different resistance modes & I must say that it has helped me a lot. Swimming part, now I can dive & swim for full length of the smaller pool and make a u turn & flip over and come back to the 8 ft end by floating without stopping anywhere. I swim mostly in summer season.

Gym & swimming is for both body & mind. This is the same misconception I had until I started fitness & swimming. Gym & swimming works better for mind & body than yoga. In my opinion yoga is for those who are vegetarians & those who stay single. For non-vegetarians & married, gym & swimming is the best. I especially recommend treadmill, bike, back-stroke swimming or floating as a prevention for BP, heart ailments etc., But I would also recommend consulting a doctor beforehand.

Nobody is against any exercise be it called as Yoga, Joga etc unless the postures made and chants said are not contradicting the oneness of God (i.e.) Shirk as Shirk is considered the unforgivable sin from the Almighty God as associating any partners to Him is not agreeable to Him as prescribed in Holy Quran and other Religious scripture revealed such as Torah, Injeel, Zaboor.

There are such chants and postures in Yoga which are totally against the fundamental teachings of Islam. Excluding those chants and postures, happily one can accept yoga as another physical exercise. This is what Saudi Arabia is gonna accept. They will exclude those part which are considered shirk and accept only those which donot contradict with Islamic belief.
