Bengaluru: High court refuses to stay Tipu Jayanti celebrations

Bengaluru, Nov 8: Karnataka high court (HC), on Tuesday November 7, refused to entertain a petition filed by K P Manjunath from Kodagu district, seeking a stay on celebrating Tipu Jayanti at state government's behest on November 10. In addition, it also dismissed a plea seeking cancellation of government circular issued in this connection.

The HC observed that intervening in the issue at a stage where only three days were left for the celebration, would not be feasible. When quashing the request of the petitioners to stay Tipu Jayanti celebrations in Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, the HC stressed that it is the responsibility of the government to monitor law and order situation in sensitive areas.

A division bench comprising in-charge Chief Justice, H G Ramesh, and Justice P S Dinesh Kumar, which heard the public interest petition filed in this respect, dismissed the pleas.

Advocate who appeared for the petitioner pointed out that a budget of ten crore rupees has been set aside for Tipu Jayanti and that many have been opposing the celebrations. The bench, reacting to this argument, observed that usually discussions are held in both houses of the legislature before taking a final decision. Observing that there will be always some opposition to different things, it obtained information about the incidents which had happened during Tipu Jayanti celebrations in 2015.

Karnataka dvocate general, Madhusudan R Naik, appearing on behalf of the state government, said that this petition is similar to the one filed last year and requested the bench not to entertain such litigations.

Tipu maybe a hero or a zero. It is in the context of people how they look at him.

He is a Zero for some, as there are several people who lost lives because of him, because of religious persecution. He is Hero to some, as he fought against British. Largely, people have forgotten all about them and do not care much. It is history.

Today being the BLACK DAY, because of DeMo, the context can be same but the theme may be different.

I want people to punish these foolish politicians who thought that they can garner the votes from some community by hurting the sentiments of another community. There is nothing forget and forgive about this.

Just think... the state govt knows what it is getting into when they decided to hold the jayanthi for tyrant. Still, why are the hell-bent on it???

I am done with voting for congress (or any party that behaves in such a way) . They are never going to get my vote. I would rather vote BJP and accept beef ban rather than vote for Congress for them to turn around and insult the memories of our ancestors.

British General, Arthur Wellesley helped 10,000 of them return to South Canara and resettle on their lands. According to Francis Buchanan, 15,000 of them returned to Mangalore and its vicinity. According to genealogist Michael Lobo, the present Mangalorean Catholic community is descended almost entirely from this small group of survivors.

It is estimated that from 60,000 to 80,000 Catholics had been captured though the generally accepted figure is 60,000. Most of them were captured from the churches when the Ash Wednesday Mass was going on in Mangalore and the rest of Canara and had no chance to escape. They were trapped like birds in the cage. The captives included old, young and very young children including babies and none was spared. They were tied by ropes like cattle and were forced to climb nearly 4,000 feet (1,200 m) through the dense jungles and gorges of the Western Ghat mountain ranges along two routes; one group traveled along the Bantwal-Belthangadi-Kulshekar-Virajpet-Coorg-Mysore route, and the other along the Gersoppa falls (Shimoga) route. It was 200 miles (320 km) from Mangalore to Srirangapatana, and the journey took six weeks. Many perished before reaching Srirangapatana. Some kept hope of returning and moved along only to be met with certain death as if entering the tiger’s cage to be devoured.

The person (s) that perpetrated sheer brutality against innocent defenceless Indians can definitely be categorized as crimes against humanity. None of them are alive, but if Tipu was alive he would be awaiting execution by a hangman.

But this barbarian criminal who did not even have his roots in India is viewed by some historians as a "freedom fighter". Perhaps, you should have read some of history books that were taught in schools. Sadly, there no protest in any schools (including Christian run schools) that I know of, no parents or teachers protested though they knew the facts. Instead, they went right ahead and taught their students these bunch of lies. History was rewritten by fake historians and today spineless politicians celebrate a mass murderer, hoping that Muslims will vote for them. Hitler once said, tell a big lie, tell it openly, and repeat it and repeat it, till it becomes the truth.

Protest against whom? Spineless politicians? Remember the church attacks, when some people went to protest what happened, they ended being beaten up by police. Police are right now on stand by, our forefathers were beaten, do you want us to be beaten again? No one was spared both young and old, men and woman.

I personally feel this would be the best form for protest would be a silent protest and use this day to have prayer services to remember our dead. Perhaps even erect a memorial or a monument for the thousands of Christians & Hindus that were butchered in cold blood by this tyrant and demon king "TIPU SULTAN" before their memories get erased and posterity will honour Tipu as a freedom fighter.

Why Siddu government & paid media silent on Devattiparambu massacre done by rashtra drohi Tippu ?

As per Gazetter of Coorg G Register 1870 edition, Devattiparambu in Ayyangeri village was a lush green Maidan in Kodagu which was popular in hosting community functions & sports. Tippu, after losing to great warriors of Kodagu every time, made a barbaric decision to massacre Kodava Hindu families at Devattiparambu Maida. As Kodava families rejected the tippu's ideology of conversion to Islam & religious demolitions, this enraged tippu too. So with cruel idea, tyrant Tippu invited all Kodava Hindu families for a cordial get together & to surrender the arms and called for a peace in the invitation.

But day on 1786, vishwasa drohi tippu failed to keep up the promise of a cordial get together. Instead, along with French army & his fake soldiers, fired the innocent 70,000 Kodava Hindu people which had assembled with women & children. More than 35,000 people were killed in Devattiparambu Maidan. This barbaric massacre by rastra drohi Tippu is far bigger than Jallianwalabagh massacre in 1919. SIDDU GOVERNMENT & PAID MEDIA WONT HIGHLIGHTS THIS.

Pure fictional and 100% lies, how can you ever make such outrageous claims which are pure nonsense - Mir Ghulam Ali Khan was an official and senior military commander (vakil and sirdar) of the Tipu Sultan.

Ghulam Ali was the Home Minister and the head vakil of Tippu Sultan. He is said to have led a delegation to Constantinople to the Ottoman Empire, and was also supposed to visit France. It is said, that he stole some of the gifts given to Tippu Sultan, and was imprisoned, and then released.

After the fall of Tippu Sultan in 1799, Ghulam Ali was pensioned off by the British. According to John Thomas, Ghulam Ali was a senior army commander of Mysore, who lived between 1758-1863. He died in 1863 at the age of 105 at Krishnagiri. Further according to Prof Karimuddin, even though Ghulam Ali died in Krishnagiri, his body was buried in Srirangapatnam.

Ghulam Ali Khan was a seasoned diplomat who was the leader of the Mysorean embassy to Turkey and from there on to France and England in 1785 – 1786. He was lame on account of sciatica and a letter from Tipu exists where he sends some oil to apply onto Ghulam Ali’s legs. Even in today’s Mysore, Ghulam Ali is called ‘Langda Ghulam Ali’ or ‘The lame Ghulam Ali’.

The peak of Mysore's economic power was under Tipu Sultan in the late 18th century. Along with his father Hyder Ali, he embarked on an ambitious program of economic development, aiming increase the wealth and revenue of Mysore.[47] Under his reign, Mysore overtook Bengal Subah as India's dominant economic power, with highly productive agriculture and textile manufacturing.[8] Mysore's average income was five times higher than subsistence level at the time.[48]

The Mysore silk industry was first initiated during the reign of Tipu Sultan. He sent an expert to Bengal Subah to study silk cultivation and processing, after which Mysore began developing polyvoltine silk.[49]

Under Tipu Sultan, Mysore had some of the world's highest real wages and living standards in the late 18th century, higher than Britain, which in turn had the highest living standards in Europe.[8] Mysore's average per-capita income was five times higher than subsistence level,[50] i.e. five times higher than $400 (1990 international dollars),[51] or $2,000 per capita. In comparison, the highest national per-capita incomes in 1820 were $1,838 for the Netherlands and $1,706 for Britain.[52]

The Srikanteswara Temple in Nanjangud still possesses a jewelled cup presented by the tippu Sultan.

What is the need of this celebration, government bought this additional headache unnecessary. This Tippu died before even the Independence real movement started.

I dont think even our brotheren Muslims ever thought about his Jayanthi. In Coastal Karnataka all Churches should have a mass and a silent protest for our forefathers and fellow Kodavas whom he killed mercilessly.

The upsetting thing for me personally is so many people are in denial to the atrocities and heinous crimes committed on our forefathers, just because they were Christians. It is estimated that over 40,000 died, and many more were forcibly converted to Islam.

On Tipu Jayanthi Hindus and Christians in Karnataka, and Muslims in the Deccan under the reign of the Nizam of Hyderabad could have prayer services to remember our dead. As Christians we should follow the example of Christ as he lay dying on the cross he said "Father forgive them, for they know not what they are doing"
