Church bell rings in Kashmir church after 5 decades

Srinagar, Oct 30 (AP): For the first time in five decades, a church bell rang on Sunday at the largest Catholic church in Kashmir.

Members of Srinagar's tiny Christian community assembled at the 120-year-old Holy Family Catholic Church and celebrated the installation of the new bell, weighing 105 kilograms (231 pounds).

The British-era church lost its original bell 50 years ago in an arson attack. According to church officials, the church and its belfry were damaged in the attack by protesters demonstrating against the 1967 Mideast war.

The bell was badly damaged and rendered useless in the incident, said Sydney Rath, a local Christian member of the church. He said the bell was not installed all these years because "the community didn't have enough resources to order a new bell after its damage."

Rath said one of the roughly 30 Christian families living in Srinagar donated the bell.

People from other faiths, including Muslims and Hindus, also participated in the event on Sunday.

Bro, the local Christians donated the money for the bell. BJP hasn't. The party has no CONTRIBUTION towards this incident. Stop taking free credits.

    1. Both Congress & BJP have contributed to this, even though the contribution of latter is more.
    2. This wouldn't have been possible if not for change in global strategy. Opening up markets in countries like Libya, Iraq, Iran & free flow of oil from these countries, shale oil production & shipping it to countries in Asia & reduction of oil price has helped in this event.
    3. I don't think not having resources is the reason for not installing the bell but for fear of the extremists.
    4. One day in future Kashmir would become just like any other state & people from other states would be able to buy property just like people of Kashmir can do elsewhere in India.

“The highest result of education is tolerance.” Tolerance is one value that is still trying to earn its place in the minds of people on this planet. Educating young minds about humanity, equality and the diverse cultures is the need of the hour. Communal differences and bitterness for each other’s culture and religion is leading the world in to such despair that humanity is losing its grip.
For a diverse country like India, religious extremism is a great challenge. And even more so for the state of Jammu and Kashmir, which is often in the news for all the wrong reasons.

In the spirit of communal harmony, Muslims at Manzgam village in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district helped perform the last rites of a Kashmiri Hindu woman.
I was, in fact, surprised to see an old mosque sharing its wall with a gurudwara. And I could really feel the divinity when I heard guruvaani and azaan on the same street. Indeed, people of different faiths effortlessly live here in complete harmony.
But the kids here in schools stunned me as they sang, “Bhasha ki taqrar nahin, mazhab ki diwar nahin, inki nazaron mein ek hain, mandir, masjid, gurudware…”. (No dispute over language, no walls between different religions, as the temples, mosques, and gurudwaras are all equal in front of our eyes).
This year Muslims population of Sumbal area of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district on Friday opened “Nandkishore Temple”- closed from almost three decades, to lure their migrated Hindu brethren to return to Valley .
The temple was reopened after a gap of more than twenty seven years to celebrate Hindu festival Maha Shivratri and to send a message to Kashmiri Pandits(KPs) to come back and live among them.
Church bell ringing after five decades is welcome sign. But 'pooja' after 27 years on this year 'Shivratri' is also appreciated.
This small events does prove that sign of normality is part of the Kashmir's diverse culture is still alive unlike BJP and its social media portraying.

That is great news. We visited this church in August when we went to Kashmir when renovation/restoration work was in progress. Hope this will bring peace and harmony among all religions in Kashmir.

It is great to watch leaders of all communities come together for this noble cause.

    Great moment indeed.

Certain community think that Kashmir belongs to them only!
This mindset has created issues for Indian republic until now, while Congress being the honor of having Man of the Match.

Recent utterance from Chidambaram is a small example from last 70 years.

I just wonder why this church and belfry were damaged by protesters against the 1967 Middle East war? I know India then under Indira Gandhi fully supported the Palestinians in their conflict against Israel. India had no ambassadorial level relations with Israel until the tenure of PM Narasimha Rao in the early 1990s. What could be the reason for this unwarranted attack on the church? I also remember having heard that Christians in Kashmir were attacked when Z.A. Bhutto was hanged in Pakistan in 1979 for the sole reason that the hangman happened to be a Christian. This is how people still misuse the freedom and liberties granted by our constitution.

God please allow peace to prevail in the beautiful state of Kashmir of India. So much bloodshed and unrest but no gain of any kind. Why you are in such a haste to give credit to any politician on this issue only by reading headlines ? For your information, people from other faiths, including Muslims and Hindus, also participated in the event on Sunday. We should not elevate any politician who support lynching of fellow Indians. Unfortunately, there is no such politician except Mr. Arvind Kajeriwal who never mix religion with politics because he is educated and not fake certificate holder.
