Mangalore, Oct 28:
In the wake of a report in a Kannada newspaper which claimed that the two newly-appointed widow priests at Kudroli Shree Gokarnanatheshwara Temple had been 'missing', former union minister Janardhan Poojary on Monday October 28 clarfied that the two widow priests had asked leave for ten days after Dasara celebrations and had not gone missing as claimed.

Addressing media persons on Monday October 28 at the temple premises, Poojary, who is also the managing trustee of the temple committee, said, "We heard various statements in the media and by people that the widow priests had gone 'missing', which is not true. The two priests had asked leave for 10 days and were back on duty last week. As I have said long back, these two priests do not have any restrictions and they can come and go anytime they wish.

"We have not put any restrictions on these two widow priests and we will not do so in future. They are welcome to perform puja in others places too if they so wish," said Poojary.

Reacting to complaints by devotees that they will not accept Prasadam if the priests do not perform the puja properly, Poojary said, "It is sufficient if the devotee prays with full devotion to god. He or she does not need a mediator."

On statements by some people that Poojary does not consult the temple management while taking decisions, he said, "It is true, as said earlier. To bring about a change for the good, I took this decision and no member of the management committee is against the appointment of widows as priests. They have accepted my decision. The whole world has praised this initiative.

"No discrimination on the basis of religion, caste or creed will be done in this temple as we have openly accepted the principles of Sri Narayana Guru. We have given full freedom to the newly-appointed widows to perform Puja. So far, one woman has come forward to be a priest and we are training her. Whoever wants to come is welcome, and we will give the training," he added.

With the aim of giving importance to women, Poojary also asked chief minister Siddaramaiah to appoint women, especially widows, to offer puja in all the 36,000 temples across the state.

Temple management committee members H S Sairam, Harikrishna Bantwal, Padmaraj among others were present.

    Janardhana Poojary's condradictory speaches :
1). WIDOWS will perform pooja. (Excessive use of word WIDOWS).
2). They have 4 months training. Just having faith in heart is enough for pooja. (Shift in contents in a single speach).
3). They can perform any rituals as Chandikayaga (with just faith in heart - no need to recit vedic hymns).

I appreciate the comment by Vinay, though the move can be appreciated, it will be a total failure. Can you expect them to perform a "Chindika Homa"? Can you entrust them to do a "Pavamana Homa" ? Whether a person would like to sip the thirtha given by those priests without doing strict adherence to the rituals? At least they should have some good personality, voice modulation, know how to chant vedic mantras. Don't you think like that?priests look like ghosts!

Mr. Janardhan Poojary don't try to force your thoughts to the devotees in the form of revolution. Don't enforce rationalistic ideas into the worship place. No common man will tolerate this foolish ideas. In our Hindu culture we look for auspicious days and time to conduct ceremonies like marriage.
Nobody does any good thing in Rahu kala or bharani, krthike likewise nobody will agree to conduct marriage by Widow priests. These are all religious sentiments followed since ages. Even in pre independent days the British have never touched religious sentiments. So please don't try your stunts in worship place

poor Mr.Poojary feel bad for him.Appreciate his concerns for women in society, but approach was pretty pathetic. You cannot thrash people/society/sanskrit/tradition this way and then tell i am going to use sanskrit for pooja and rituals such as chandika homa.Just like you can't be a deacon/pastor of the church or Imam/Maulana of a mosque in 4 mths training the same goes with vedic/hindu rituals and worship.Anybody can do a aarthi to the lord but if you are talking about being a priest of a temple you have to be trained well, probably for 10-12 yrs.Training women is a good thing but Mr.Poojary done it fast for political stunt and popularity i feel. The women may have felt ignorant in front of the huge gathering not knowing the fundamentals of day to day worship.

We did not hear so far any negative news regarding Kudroli temple the priests and the worship what so ever which follows the principles of 'Shri Narayana Guru'. Sometime it is the man made problems to an extent "GOD' is everywhere we see him in different forms and pray accordingly and he who sees us equally and never differentiate either.

Mr Poojary there is no need to take tension for this as the things were going fine in Kudroli temple before and now also its going fine. Kindly advise your party newly elected representatives to concentrate to work more on development of mangalore city which is in tortise shape now. Please remember we are not in late 1940s or 1960s now. At present the things are not like before. At present people expect good roads, uninterrupted electricity supply, continuous water supply and more employment opportunities which our mangalore city is lacking at present. Kindly work towards such things instead of making hue and cry for silly matters. All the best to you.

E jananak daaye himse korapar maare? Hinduism entertains all types of rituals and worship , but hindu society which was following some superstitions restricted such things like madi- mailige higiness, Subah sakuna good sign, and many. may be in olden days it had some meaning like castism, but today if some body interested to do pooja they should allowed and they at same time they should know all the procedures,in north india at many temples people irrespective of male or female, irrespective of cast(today) are allowed to do poja directly, priests just assists them.

of bringing widows into the mainstream. The fan fare was un- necessary, but.
His intentions are to be applauded.
However the process should be studied more studiously and continuous and not a one time affair. The society should support this wholeheartedly. This support should come from within and without any selfish motives.

Poojariji, like we never took anything serious whenever people like you make any statement, you too don’t take it serious when people say something. Any changes in Society or Corporate Sector take some time to settle down with the new system. Good or bad, results will be known only when we apply it practically. But practically as adopted rituals, Head Priest can’t take leave as & when he or she wants unless they can’t enter the “Garbha Gudi” because they should not be casual in their job approach

It’s nice to see that someone is trying to bring about some change in the society. But I doubt if society is prepared to accept such a change. Fact is that the people who might embrace such changes rarely visit temples and people who regularly visit temple are traditional people who don't want to change.
I agree that Widows shouldn't be treated as inauspicious. But for that they need not be priests in temple.
Widows are not treated as they used to be 20 years ago. Now-a-days we treat them with respect even though don't involve them in certain rituals/customs. All of us do take their blessings during marriage or any other religious ceremony. I see that they are treated with great respect if they are elders. Is it not the case?
Yes, it is true that, the person who is performing pooja in temple should know the “Mantras” and his/her mind/soul should be clean. Temple/Church/Mosque/any other holy places where go to pray is having peace. That’s the reason we are going there. Otherwise we could have sit at home and pray there itself.
As per devotees, these priests were performing only Aarati. Without knowing the mantras, What is the use of that?
As Sarvajna said – “ What boots it to walk round the holy shrine mindlessly like a bullock ever bearing the yoke in an Oil Mill”.
