Bangalore: Monorail to be introduced in Mangalore?

From Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore

Bangalore, Sep 17:
The traffic woes of coastal city of Mangalore along with the menace of private city bus service could be a thing of the past if the proposal for introduction of monorail system is implemented.

Several firms, especially from Malaysia, which have the expertise of implementing and operating the monorail system have come forward to develop monorail system in the port city of Mangalore.

Apart from Mangalore, proposals have come for taking up monorail system projects in Bangalore and Hubli-Dharward too.

Information and Infrastructure Development Minister Santosh Lad, who spoke to reporters in Bangalore on Tuesday, said several firms have already held first round of talks with the government on introducing monorail system in Bangalore, Mangalore and Hubli-Dharwad.

The estimated cost for elevated monorail system ranges from Rs 100 crore to Rs 120 crore, the minister said.

With Bangalore expected to complete the first phase of the Metro Rail Project by next year and take up the second phase work, the implementation of the monorail system would act as feeder service for the metro rail project, the minister said explaining that the elevated monorail project can be conveniently implemented even in congested parts of the city without major land acquisition hassles as the land requirement will not be much.

However, Lad said details regarding outlays for projects, invitation of expression of interest and land acquisition issues would be known only in the next couple of weeks.

Firms have proposed to develop 20-25 km monorail in Hubli-Dharwad and Mangalore and 30-35 km in Bangalore in the first phases, he said pointing out that the actual length of monorail would be known later.

"We have asked the foreign firms to visit to Belgaum and other city corporations also to explore opportunities for construction of monorail in second tier cities," Lad said.

The government would provide all kinds of support to the companies, who have evinced keen interest to invest in the infrastructure in the State on PPP Model.

However, due to economic slowdown and various other reasons the projects were not being realised, he said.

Traffic in Bangalore could be tackled by having monorail system that could be used as feeder service to metro rail.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has taken note of the necessity of developing the monorail in the city, Lad said.

Asked about delay in completion of railway projects in the State, he said out of 14 projects only two had been completed so far.

Land acquisition and escalation of cost are the major reasons for the delay.

The minister said he has written to Union Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge seeking his intervention to expedite work on railway projects in the State.

However, development of infrastructure in city corporation limits would be possible only by levying of cess on citizens in city corporation limits, the minister said pointing out that the people must be prepared to shoulder part of the burden.

One does not get a parking slot in entire Hampankatta area even for a small Maruti 800 car. It is best to travel by bus or an auto. It is madness to take a car to Hampankatta for your shopping.

This reminds me of the ex. BJP Tourism minister saying when he visited Malpe to go to St. Marys Island that he will build a cable-car to cross over. His idea was that next time he visited the place his dhoti does not get whilst boarding the boat. I had commented that time he should build a few toilettes on the Malpe beach first then the cable-car. No sign of the toilettes nor the cable-car. No sign of the minister also. Discuss, blame and argue about problems, ignore solutions and waste time is our best practice.
We have the opportunity to use minimum energy (fuel), by extensively using the natural force (free, abundant and available 24/7).
The gravity power is a powerful force which needs no storage, maintenance and costs.
Being a huge ignored treasure and neglected force, it has the capacity to revolutionize the entire surface transport sector.
Why we need to carry and move the dead weight of millions of tons of commuters and goods on wheels, by spending billions of dollars, to get unhealthy air pollution, peace disturbing sound pollution and extreme costs of production, maintenance and running of millions of vehicles?
Why we blindly follow the primitive style of tortoise, slow and steady in the entire surface transport sector?
Why not we can implement a concept change and get rid of our severe problems, eradicate the Current Account Deficit and have a comfortable Foreign Exchange Reserve?
Being in new economy of fast and dynamic nature why we prefer to live in the old economy?

Sir, we were hoping Mangalore will get a seperate Railway Division for years. Ok. Now Shri Kharge is the Union Railway Minister. Lets wait & see when our dream will be fulfilled.
The main important highways to Bangalore & Mysore are in a pitiable condition for years now. Shri Oscar Fernandes is the Union Minister for Surface transport & Highways. Lets wait and see when the promised tunnel will be operative and we can have a pleasant and safe journey.
Another important arterial road from Kundapur to Kasaragod is a driver's nightmare as of today. When do we get a clean, fully completed, safe six lane highway for which the work started several years ago.So, with these tasks still unfinished digging up our already narrow roads in Mangalore for the Monorail will be another nail in the coffin for our fellow motorists. Is anybody listening????????????

One thing I have noticed in this article that almost all from 52 commentators till now agreed to implementation of Mono rail in our region irrespective of their individual or family or community or caste support to any Political Party. Keep it up Friends this is the kind of spirit we have to show all the time when it comes to any development issues. Neglect those Political Parties who try to please any particular community or caste just because of their vote bank. We need to show unity in diversity like this to uplift our region with so many developments to generate more employment opportunity for locals so that we don’t go outside to earn our livelihood. Off course those who gone out from our region many like you & me, might have made good bank balances or property but we never allowed or unable to enjoy our social life like we do at our home country

If our newly formed Government is sincere in their promise, cost of even 100 to 200 Crores is peanut for any State Government. Almost all Political Parties gave donation more than 100 Crores of Rupees to Minority Committees or Mutt then why can’t they go for Mono Rail Project which is more than required in our region. But they should finish their dream project of four lanes of NH66 which is in the verge of finishing

Monorail, Hyperloop,Time Travel,Private Flying Cars, Supersonic Bullet Trains, etc are terms which sound good to our "Efficient Transportation" starving ears,

For the time being let us focus on our Asphalt starving NH66 which is deprived of basic ingredients of life.

For a starving person , the expectation of a Kandige fish(Rs.800 per Kg) sounds nice ,but the ground reality is he immediately needs food to quench his hunger to survive and his only friend is Bhutai( Rs 50 per Kg).

During the day let us focus on completing existing infrastructural projects like NH66 , In the night we can dream building Monorail, Space Station, etc .etc

Friends, it is easy to post negative comments and gain momentary satisfaction.

Potholes, bad roads and traffic congestion as well as delays in uting projects, to name a few of the travails of urban commuters, have been there since time immemorial and will probably be there in future too. But why can't we appreciate when something is being sought to be done?

Let us hope the project materialises soon rather than being content with posting merely negative comments and winning brownie points.

It is only when you dream big, that the dreams might eventually come true. We cannot shut our eyes just because of endemic problems.

yes, MRT -clean transport system is the future which is absolutely necessity.
but it should well planned -organized-constructed by right cos.
Meanwhile mr. Siddaramiah should invite clusters o of cos from Japan- Korea- taiwan- china - indonesia- malaysia-singapore to set up industries in kranataka . in joint venture /collaboration.
Allot them land - infrastructure facilities and help them establish well.
support them - respect them and let us be industrious and evolve and diversify with innovation .
for the world.mass production with frugal engineering-reverse engineering -more value addition by our engineers/scientist.
