Update

Udupi, Dec 8: The family of Jacintha in Shirva is in a state of utter disbelief, as there was no indication at all that such a tragedy could descend on them.

Speaking to daijiworld, Jacintha's mother-in-law Carmine said that neither her daughter-in-law nor son Benedict had told the family about the prank call that reportedly pushed Jacintha to suicide.

"Benedict used to call every day but he nor Jacintha said anything about what had happened. Everything seemed normal," she said.

Hailing from Valencia in Mangalore, Jacintha did her nursing at Father Muller College of Nursing, and got married to Benedict Barboza from Shirva, in 1993. The couple then moved to Muscat before settling down in the UK nine years ago. They are blessed with two children Junal (16) and Lisha (14).

The family comes down to Shirva once in two years. Their last visit was in December 2011.

Benedict's parents were informed of the tragedy by phone on Friday December 7 night at around 8 pm.

It is not known yet whether the body would be brought to Shirva.

Jacintha Saldanha's Family in Grief After Prank Call Leads to her Death

London, Dec 8 (Daily Mail): The family of a nurse found dead in a suspected suicide just two days after transferring a hoax call about the Duchess of Cambridge have told of their devastation at losing their 'beloved Jacintha'.

Mother-of-two Jacintha Saldanha, 46, reportedly hailing from Shirva, Udupi in Southern India, who was working on the switchboard at the King Edward VII Hospital when 2DayFM obtained intimate details about Kate, was found dead on Friday morning.

As the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge spoke of their 'deep sadness' at the tragedy, the grieving family of the 'excellent' nurse said:  'We as a family are deeply saddened by the loss of our beloved Jacintha.'

Prince William and his pregnant wife Kate told how they are 'deeply saddened' by the tragedy. A Palace spokesman said the couple had not made a complaint about the prank call.

'Their thoughts and prayers are with Jacintha Saldanha’s family, friends and colleagues at this very sad time,' a statement said.

Jacintha's residence in Bristol

When asked if they had expressed concern, the spokesman added: 'On the contrary we offered our full and heartfelt support to the nurses involved and hospital staff at all times.'

The shock waves over the death of the nurse have spread rapidly around Australia. British-born Prime Minister Julia Gillard described the death as 'a terrible tragedy' and, through a spokesman, passed on her deep-felt condolences to the family of Jacintha.

Jacintha Saldanha, also known as Jess, is thought to have come to the UK from southern India more than ten years ago and settled in the UK with her partner, 49-year-old hospital accountant Benedict Barboza.

The couple bought their £123,000 three-bedroomed home in 2005 in the Westbury-on-Trym district of Bristol.

After working for the North Bristol NHS Trust, which runs Frenchay and Southmead hospitals, it is believed the nurse chose to apply for a job at King Edward four years ago and appears to have been living in the nursing accommodation ever since.

She has a son called Junal, 16, and daughter, believed to be 14. She stayed in London when she was working before returning to her family on days off.

News of the death broke in the middle of the night in Australia and it was only during the evening London time yesterday that Australians woke to hear about the tragedy.

It led the news on every radio station, including the national broadcaster, the ABC. It reported there had been an outpouring of anger in the UK and said thousands of people had demanded that the DJs be fired.

The Palace declined to say whether the Duchess met Jacintha Saldanha but it was very possible.

The King Edward VII hospital, who were not believed to be disciplining Jacintha over the incident, said it announced her death with 'very deep sadness.'

Their statement added: 'Jacintha has worked at the King Edward VII Hospital for more than four years. She was an excellent nurse and well respected and popular with all over her colleagues.'

The emergency services were called and two ambulances were despatched to the central London residence today. But paramedics were unable to revive her and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her family, husband and two children have been informed.

The hospital said this afternoon: 'It is with very deep sadness that we confirm the tragic death of a member of our nursing staff, Jacintha Saldanha.

Jacintha has worked at the King Edward VII’s Hospital for more than four years. She was an excellent nurse and well-respected and popular with all of her colleagues.

'We can confirm that Jacintha was recently the victim of a hoax call to the hospital. The hospital had been supporting her throughout this difficult time.

Officers from Scotland Yard launched an investigation yesterday and are treating the death as ‘unexplained’.

A Downing Street spokesman said: ‘The Prime Minister’s thoughts are with the family and colleagues of Jacintha Saldanha at this sad time.’

The exact cause of death remained unclear. However, one source indicated that the woman appeared to have killed herself.

The Prank Call

Ms Saldanha answered the hoax call at 5.30am on Wednesday morning and transferred the call through to Kate's ward.

Impersonating the Queen, Mel Greig said: ‘Oh, hello there. Could I please speak to Kate please, my granddaughter?’

Thinking she was speaking to the Queen, the receptionist replied: ‘Oh yes, just hold on ma’am’.

The Australian DJs Michael Christian and Mel Grieg who played the prank

Prank Call Video

She then put the presenters through to one of the nurses who was caring for the Duchess.
The nurse also believed she was speaking to the Queen and went on to make a number of deeply personal observations about Kate’s health.

A recording of the entire conversation was played on the Sydney-based radio station 2Day.

A radio station spokesman later apologised for the 'inconvenience' caused by the call.

He said yesterday: '2Day FM sincerely apologises for any inconvenience caused by the enquiry to Kate’s hospital. The radio segment was done with the best intentions and we wish Kate and her family all the best.'

The station is owned by Southern Cross Austereo, an Australian media group formed in a merger last year that has a collection of TV and radio brands, and claims to be able to connect with 95 per cent of Australians every week.

The prank call was pre-recorded and vetted by lawyers before being broadcast in Sydney.

The presenters, from 2Day FM, remarked during their show how their efforts were the 'easiest prank call ever made', as they put on mock British accents they later described as 'terrible'.

The Australian station and presenters advertised the stunt worldwide and Christian was continuing to boast about the prank 'making international headlines' on Twitter.

The hospital said Jacintha Saldanha had not been disciplined over the call.

Told about the tragedy last night, Vicki Heath, a spokesman for 2DayFM, said: ‘Is this is a hoax call? You’re having me on, aren’t you?’ Assured that the call was genuine, she burst into tears.

‘I can’t believe this – I just can’t believe it,’ she said. ‘Oh my God, oh no.’

The station apologised for 'any inconvenience caused' but provoked widespread fury and disbelief by continuing to continuing to promote its hoax, calling it 'the prank call the world is talking about' before playing clips of the recording.

The owners of the radio station which employed Mel Greig and Michael Christian announced that the duo will not return to their show until further notice.

It is believed that senior management at 2Day FM were so shocked at the death of Jacintha that bosses have ordered the pair off the air - probably never to return.

A statement from the station owners said: 'Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) and 2Day FM are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the death of the nurse, Jacintha Saldanha from King Edward V11 Hospital and we extend our deepest sympathies to her family, and all that have been affected by this situation around the world.

'CEO Rhys Holleran has spoken with the presenters, they are both deeply shocked, and at this time we have agreed that they not comment about the circumstances.

'SCA and the hosts have decided that they will not return to their radio show, until further notice out of respect for what can only be described as a tragedy.'

As the backlash grew the DJs both deleted their Twitter accounts. The radio station's Facebook page was bombarded with thousands of abusive comments from outraged users.

She was a Lovely Woman - Neighbour

A neighbour said the family have lived in there £130,000 terraced home in Bristol for about eight years.

Jacintha lived with her husband Benedict Barboza (Ben) and son Junal, 16, and daughter, believed to be 14. She stays in London when she is working and lives with her family on days off.

The neighbour said: 'They're a lovely family - Ben gives my lad a lift when he goes refereeing at Bristol Rovers with Junal.

'It's so so tragic, she was such a lovely woman. She must have thought there was no way back, that's the only thing I can think of.'

Another neighbour of Jacintha described the tragic nurse as 'a lovely woman'.

Marianne Homes, 49, said: 'I've always known her as the doctor, she was always very smartly dressed.

'Their son was always really into football, we always saw him with a ball kicking it about with his friends. She was a lovely woman, everytime I saw her she would talk to me.

'I hadn't seen her for a while, I wondered what had happened to her it's so sad to know this has happened. She was always so smartly dressed and well presented. I think her kids are secondary school age, she definitely has one boy and one girl.'

A former neighbour of the nurse described her as a 'nice, lovely lady'.

Fighting back tears, she said: 'What a terrible tragedy - just before Christmas as well. Oh those two young boys - they'll be heartbroken. Her and Ben were a lovely couple.

'They didn't live here very long, but they were such nice neighbours - they invited us in for a curry when they moved in. They lived here seven or eight years ago, if not more. They kept themselves to themselves mostly. They bought their own house and moved on - they were just renting here I think.

'I can't believe what happened. It's so sad, so tragic. They always spoke to us - she was such a nice lady. It's devastating to hear she's gone - and in such circumstances that could be so easily avoided.  Those Australians that called the hospital want stringing up.'

'A first class nurse who cared diligently for hundreds'

King Edward VII hospital spoke of the their shock at the death of Jacintha Saldanha in a statement:

'It is with very deep sadness that we confirm the tragic death of a member of our nursing staff, Jacintha Saldanha.

'Jacintha has worked at the King Edward VII’s Hospital for more than four years. She was an excellent nurse and well-respected and popular with all of her colleagues.

'We can confirm that Jacintha was recently the victim of a hoax call to the hospital. The hospital had been supporting her throughout this difficult time.'

John Lofthouse, Chief Executive at King Edward VII’s Hospital, said: 'Our thoughts and deepest sympathies at this time are with her family and friends. Everyone is shocked by the loss of a much loved and valued colleague."

Lord Glenarthur, Chairman of King Edward VII’s Hospital, says, 'This is a tragic event. Jacintha was a first class nurse who cared diligently for hundreds of patients during her time with us. She will be greatly missed.'

These pranks are often not funny at all and are irritating normal people, there are not so many pranks that are kind and not abusive and thus, funny. Most of them are not funny at all and it is not even fun to see all this stupidity, also when they okay their pranks, they have no idea what background the person has - may be the heart is working on the edge, may be nervous system is disbalanced... In fact, they never know about the result and always risk to prank on somebody who can be affected too much. I wish it was possible to return back and keep the life of this woman who probably was too sensitive to the whole thing. So sad and feel sorry for the family who lost this still woman, if that was possible, I wish all these pranks would be forbidden at all - it is a bad thing to play with people's emotions

It's sad what happened to Jacintha and I feel sorry for her kids and husband . WOW , nuthin worse than losing your mother .
But it's hard to understand why she killed herself over this . The other nurse gave the private details away and kinda was more fooled.
Many people do prank calls nowdays and I admit I am immature sometimes and laugh at them .I am amazed the Australian DJ's got through to that hospital switchboard and the actual nurses dealing with royalty anyway....VERY BAD security by that hospital I have to say.
Maybe Jacithna was depressed or under pressure for some reason as to kill yourself over this does'nt make sense . She had two children for a start who will be suffering horribly after losing their mum so Jacintha must have had more worries than this n maybe this just pushed her over the edge . One should never kill yourself anyway . In R.C church it's sposed to be a sin and it is a waste of a life of a proffesional , experienced nurse that did good for the world .
I don't judge Jacintha as she seems a nice lady n mum and must have been VERY upset n depressed to committ suicide .
I feel a bit sorry for the pranksters as they were silly but no way did they know it'd lead to such a tragedy .They will always have it on their conscience and people dont need to be stupid n take the law in their own hands .
Just sad all round..especially for her kids n husband .

I thought we live in a First World country. Where people respected everyone's rights and respected others. My impressions have changed now. Danger lurks everywhere and however careful one might think they are, others are playing roulette with your life in one form or other.
This unthinkable act of impersonating the Highest and the most noble person in our society with malice and forethought is the meanest and most cruel act of the century.
AND today I also lost a most precious person. And I consider your daughter Jacinta as my daughter too. I write this with tears running down my cheeks. May her soul rest in peace and may the family that lost a dear and near one, a Mother and the Family that lost a daughter and a Grand Mother who also lost a dear one dig deep and stand bravely and face upto this situation and move on very gracefully bearing such a deep loss. My heart felt condolences and sympathies are sent to you with this small note.
May God Go with you all.

This is suicide or is it? I suspect something more deep. A responsible woman like Jacintha resorting to suicide seems a little doubtful. Would definitely see what unfolds. And if it was suicide, I think it would be too foolish to take such a step when you had more responsibility to the kids and husband. And not to mention a your own soul.

After listening to the call it is difficult to believe this is an suicide. Jacintha, did not divulge any details, all details where divulged by the other nurse who appears to be British from her accent.

Jacintha just transferred the call to her. Jacintha is a nurse , she is not a trained receptionist. So if someone is to be blamed it is the British nurse.

I think the hospital tried to frame this on Jacintha to protect the British nurse who is a white.

The royal family stinks, usual racism from the British, protecting their own at the cost of someone elses life.

THERE IS MUCH MUCH MORE TO HER DEATH THAN JUST BEING A VICTIM OF A SIMPLE HOAX PRANK. ALSO ON HEARING THE AUDIO, IT SHOWS SHE HAD ONLY PATCHED THE DJS THROUGH TO ANOTHER NURSE WHO HAD RELEASED MORE INFO. ITS WEIRD !!! COULD IT HAVE BEEN SHE WAS UNDER PRESSURE FROM THE AUTHORITIES AND HOSPITAL TO RETIRE OR QUIT OVER THE INCIDENT ??? AND CONSIDERING THE CURRENT ECONOMIC UNCERTAINTIES SHE TOOK THE GRAVE STEP ??? SURELY THERE IS MORE TO ALL THIS …. THIS IS JUST MY SIMPLE THEORY. I DONT THINK ANYONE WOULD WANT TO WASTE A LIFE OVER SOMETHING SOO TRIFLING.

This royal family are actually scumbags with their hands deep in the occult.

It is sad to see a noble soul like Jacintha go. She must have been pressured into this by both the hospital administration. Why would a mother of 2 children end her life on just a prank, it does not make any sense to me.

May her soul rest in peace. While her death was directly related to the prank call we have to still wonder what actually pushed her off the edge.Could it have been the scoulding from her superiors, administrative talk or was there any racism here.Remember she is working in a royal hospital, immmigrants are not treated the same way as native british citizens. While one death no matter how tragic it is would not stop a sense of humor by 7 billion people in the world it should make us realize what our actions would do to other people including death. In Jacintha's case she must have felt it was more important for her to end life for a light hearted joke than stay with her family.

Playing such pranks and that too where the British Royalty is involved is totally unacceptable. Moreover, look at the havoc the prank led to. A mother dies, two children are made motherless and a lonely father in an alien land has now to fend for himself and all this for a prank by Australian DJs who openly display their pleasure on. They deserve to be punished for this.

She was tricked by the pranksters and we have lost such a gem of a lady. I remember her from my muscat days and cannot believe she is no more. Very sad & unfortunate death. May her soul rest in peace. People should have courage at all times. Recitation of daily day to day deep prayers are must for all. If you have strong faith in Jesus, you can face any problems. In our busy schedule of work, time for prayer and time for family is must for all. Jesus says "put all your worries and troubles on me, that's why I came to save mankind". But suicide is the game of devil, he never leaves even if you are wealthy or healthy. All should go to the website: divinemercysharjah.org or tabor ashram or Fr.Franklin Dsouza's preachings on youtube.

May God give enough strength to bear the grief to their family.

We can only imagine what she might have gone through after the incident. anybody will be shocked to see the conversation online and to see how people are making fun of your situation. And i belive that even the hospital authorities might have questioned her after the incident(which they deny). and we cannot expect any fair investigation because 'Royal' familiy is involved here. unless the hospital had a way Identifying a caller, they cannot blame the operator to transfer the call. Their accent was obvious in the later part of call. but Jacintha only had a brief conversation (which was not enough to differentiate the accent)

In hindsight, I think she was in deep fear of action getting initiated against her which she bottled up inside her which ultimately climaxed to sudden suicide!!

Secondly, when such famous people are getting treated is there no protocol for telecallers/visitors to being given permission access to them? Sufficient checks should have been in place to see that the call is not from a prankster especially since a VVIP is involved? The sequence of events defies my imagination!!

Really sad. These DJ's have played prank on somones life and ruined thier family. Shame on them. Rest in Peace Jacintha.

What Jacinta would have lost at the most, had the hospital decided to take action against her call transferring ? Her job right ? She is qualified enough to find another job and has sufficient reason to defend herself because she isn't a receptionist but a nurse by profession. The Hospital or the Royal administration could have sued the crazy DJs and the Radio Station.

Why did she have to commit suicide ? Now, she lost her family and her growing children lost a mother and her husband is left all alone to raise the children. Nursing is a profession that strengthens and supports patients who general lose hope, she disproves it all.

May her soul rest in peace.

Today morning when we saw the news in “Gulf News” we feared for worst sensing her surname locates to our Coastal region only. This has been happened just because of prank call by Australian DJs’ of “2DayFM” radio channel. Though their intention was not to hurt anyone but what a fatal prank call it is. I think sensing trouble for her she might have taken serious fatal steps to end her life. Indian Government should press for legal action against those two DJs’ with Australian Government so that others should learn a lesson from this kind of callous attitude

RIP. There is absolutely no reason to committ suicide since she is a nurse and not a trianed receptionist. This prank could have been done anybodyelse. May be she didn't get the support and comfort that she wanted from others

God bless the family and give strength to her kids, RIP Jascintha. Perhaps too much stress and targeted comments/possible abuse might have lead to this. why blame the nurse for sharing information, there should be clear protocols to deal with royalty that need to be maintained by hospital.
