Dubai, Oct 15: It was indeed heartening to see a jam-packed audience at the Shaikh Rashid Auditorium of the Indian High School for a Konkani drama which was the highest ever seen in recent times for a Konkani programme. That there is scope for powerful dramas was evident by the turnout or may be because it was Dubai’s most famous dramatist Pradeep Barboza who was behind the entire entertainment. The goodly Friday crowd enjoyed every bit although one could do better with better dialogue delivery and far more powerful voices and sound as well.

The crowd which was eager to listen to every word from the actors had to repeatedly shout saying ‘sound sound’ which could have been avoided with better management. The actors too with more experience should learn to deliver their dialogues right in front of the microphones although it may not be possible always.

Dubai’s three-in-one talent Pradeep Barboza is proving that he can deliver more than what the audience wants. This was evident when his new play 'Ootre Uzwadlem' went beyond one’s imagination with plenty to laugh and cheer while also managing to convey a meaningful social message. Pradeep is a well know drama writer, actor and director all rolled into one.

The playwright, actor and director who has shown his immense dramatic skills with numerous plays successfully performed all over India and the Gulf was once again at his best with ‘Ootre Uzwadelm’ where the youngsters trained by him showed enough qualities to perform well in front of the paying public.

As the contractor Pradeep excelled with his sure and quick dialogues while the shopkeeper Alex maam (Sunil) caught the eye with his great acting. Another pair to catch the eye was the comical lorry driver (Gowin) and conductor (Paul) who were tailor made for their roles. The lorry driver Godwin in particular was cut out for the role although one rarely saw him using the trio of mobiles which he was carrying to talk to his girl friends!

Dubai's young talents Ramcy Fernandes and Sharon Rego in lead roles proved their maturity and excelled in all departments.

Those in villain's role 'uncle', and as mother and two brothers too showed their ability in acting and dialogue delivery.

One has seen the young Deepak D’Silva Paladka's mettle in other Konkani plays in Dubai and elsewhere. Along with Pradeep Barboza, Deepak is known to enact his roles with absolute efficiency. As the Dubai-returned office boy he took the cake with his fine acting. Other actors too played well within their abilities.

The evening was put up by Konkan Yuva who channeled their energies for a good cause and proved that they were responsible citizens even if they have left their shores and come to the UAE. The energetic Catholic youngsters managed to organize a meaningful drama for the first time with plenty of teamwork and one has to commend their efforts.

In a brief stage programe, the event was inaugurated by lighting the camp. Ronald Colaco, NRI entrepreneur was the chief guest. Walter Nandalike of Daijiworld, Dayan D'Souza of Daiji Dubai and Fernandes Cascia, veteran dramatist were the guests of honour.

Ronald Colaco inspired the young minds and urged the audience to keep aside some part of their earnings to contribute for the betterment of their mother tongue, Konkani. Leading by example, he announced AED 25,000 for Konkan Yuva and urged the youngsters to unite and do more good work like they have been doing for the last seven years.

'Ootre Uzwadlem' playwright Pradeep Barboza and Francis Fernandes Cascia both were honoured on the occasion. Konkan Yuva bestowed the title ‘Comedy Prince ‘ to Pradeep Barboza.

Earlier, the audience were treated to mind-blowing dance performances by the talented kids of Dubai, followed by a power-point presentation of Konkan Yuva's achievements.

Dubai's well-known compere Uttam Menezes compered the stage programme. Deepak Machado introduced Pradeep Barboza to the audience.

All in all, it was a well-organized event by Konkan Yuva and one only hopes that the organization will find ways to use their revenues to better the conditions of the people around them. Well done, Konkan Yuva.

Kudos to the Konkan Yuva (KY) team, I personally was overjoyed to see the turn out. I am even more surprised by the number of comments. There are some negative comments as well. KY remember when people start talking about you especially in a negative way, it also means you have started succeeding (courtesy Guru movie....). Okay, lets see the larger picture, it takes great amount of courage to put up a 'konkani drama' at this day and age. If I remember correctly the first scene was around 45 minutes, and since I myself am a part theatre person I can understand how much time and effort you guys must have put up to remember those lines.

Don’t worry about any negative comments, though I truly believe in the adage ‘Blame Softly and Praise Loudly’. To use a public platform like Daiji for your frustration is totally uncalled for. You can easily get in touch with the artists or the organisers or any one from the KY team and ‘Blame Softly’.

Nevertheless smart screenplay by Pradeep, to manage all the scenes with just one back. Great acting skills by all artists involved. Well done.

More power to you guys. Don’t give in and keep running.

First of all congratulation to Mr Pradeep for presenting one more best drama to Konkans. The concept, story, presentaion ,dialogues, costumes well & good. However as a suggetion Mr Pradeep has to act with his own stype without immitating any other Tulu actors. He has that ability and audience will accept it.All other actors performed very well, but Mama-Vilain had an opportunity to make that role more stronger.Congrats to KY for organising wondeful event.

Regarding the sound issue, I guess the organisers sorted out before the end of the first scene. Bieng in the entertainment industry for a decade I can say that it is impossible to do a sound test prior to the event and expect it to be right because the auditorium conditions change. The sound test is done in a empty auditorium and one gets only 5-10 mts once the show begins to know if the sound is actually fine as the acoustic conditions of the auditorium have changed in those few minutes, with over 1500 people in the auditorium every thing changes including the temperaturs, acoustic settings etc.

This is the second drama I have seen in last two weeks and I was shocked at some of the uncouth, unwanted comments made by some members of the audience during the running of the event. This is getting repeated with every Konkani Program and a set of mischief mongers get cheap thrills in gaining Mr. smart crown for their cheap comments. Seriously – it is very easy to pass comments when the lights are not on you and the audience is not facing you, all the guys who pass comments during the show, I request you to muster the courage to take the stage and face the crowd else please do not distract art lover like me.

Please ignore all critics (they cannot be pleased because they do not want to be pleased), your biggest reward is the audience. The packed house proved it all. Need i say more?

It is not correct to compare the older generations taste and the new generations likes…..in the 80-90’s drama’s were the one of the few options of social entertainment for a society which was dominated by large familis but today’s artist have to compete with multi entertainment platforms including radio, social media, satellite television, multiplex, mobile technology, gaming and now the society is dominated by nuclear families. It is proven that this generation works more number of hours than the previous generation, this generation sleeps more than the previous generation, this generation is more aloof than the previous generation but this generation is more konkani than the previous generation.

I am one among those who switched over to instant entertainment but I have started coming back to theatres after a gap of 20 years and all credit goes to organisations like Konkan Yuva and ace artist like Pradeep.

Kudos to KY team, I guess these youngster really need encouragement coz they have achieved something that was considered impossible few years back in Dubai

Does the audience come late coz the program starts late or does the program start last coz the audience comes late is like asking what comes first –chicken or egg?

I would like to give benefit of doubt to the organizers.

The gates opened at sharp 4.30, it does take over 45 minutes for a crowd 1500 seats to take their seats (remember it was a sellout event)

Comparing Pradeep with other artist is like comparing Face book with Krishi Darshan, both are equally good and are/were well suited for the time they exist/ed. Although I am from the Krishi Darshan generation I can say that you cannot run Krishi Darshan anymore as they won’t be any buyers.

Chapra’s Bangar Monis was a classic play and the actors were brilliant as well but the audience turnout comparison is a testimonial to what sells today and Pradeep is on the right track. Remember Konkani Drama is a dying art and artist like Pradeep who are giving life to the dying art should be highly encouraged.

Ootre Uzvadlem is a good attempt by Pradeep Barboza.Actors should have put on some more efforts. When compared to Chafra's Bhangar Monis, Ootre Uzvadlem seems to be following the foot steps of Devdas Kapikad a wellknown Tulu playwright. If Pradeep Barboza focuses on original ideas,he can be a successful playwright.

Congrats Konkan Yuva for your efforts in staging the new drama ‘Ootre Uzwadle’ written and director by the young playwright Mr. Pradeep Barboza. Though all the actors have performed their respective roles very well, the main highlight was the excellent acting by Alesam, Ambassador Ambu, Mekky and Roshan. The 1st scene was a bit boring because of the sound problem but from 2nd scene onwards all of us were glued to our seat as there was plenty of comedy. Mr. Pradeep Barboza’s title of ‘Comedy Prince’ is well deserved because of his hard work for keeping the Konkani language alive. Once again hats off to all who are involved in making this event a successful one!

Congratulations Konkan Yuva Team. It was a good show with full capacity audiences. Pradeep and team of actors did a splendid job. It is not easy to organize a drama with several artists as it needs a lot of time and commitment.

From Organizers side please look into the below areas for improvement :

    1) Please start the show on time or within the tolerable delay of maximum 30 minutes. At least 500 – 600 people were in the hall by designated time of 4.30pm but the show started at 5.35 pm.

    2) Please invite the VIPs and guests on time.

    3) Being a Konkani organization (as the name itself says), please use matured Konkani as there were many mistakes while narrating the past history of Konkan Yuva and also when honoring Pradeep Barboza.
