Sr Philomena Cardoza (69), daughter of the late Diego and Theresa Cardoza, passed away on July 11, 2020.

Sr Philomena was the former Provincial of the Congregation of St Joseph’s of Tarbs, Bangalore and former principal of Jyothi Nivas College, Bangalore. She was presently the principal of St Aloysius Degree College, Coxtown, Bangalore.

Funeral on Monday, July 13 in St Francis Xavier Convent, Bangalore. Covid precautions to be followed.

My dearest Sister Philo,

You are such a wonderful human being ,guide and a philosopher. She guided me very well .At any situation Sr Philo never used to lose her cool. Whenever I used to get tensed she used to tell me take it easy always. She knew my mother also and she respected my mother. Sad news. A prominent educationist is called by God Almighty into His Heavenly Abode. Her contributions in the education field to those of her students will certainly be relished n reminisced by the students.
To the person with an epitome of kindness May Almighty God grant her Eternal Rest & may her soul Rest in Peace .A quote from the Bhagavad Gita:-maamupetya punarjanma
duhkhaalaya mashaashwatam
naapnuvanti mahaatmaanaha

Very sad to hear about the sudden death of Sr Philo. she was such a loving and dynamic person. She was always full of life and I do miss her smiling face. I used to meet her during our annual KRCR meetings. It was a great joy for me to be in her company. Once about 6 years back once I stayed in the SJT Provinialate because of her pressing invitation and I was touched by her warm hospitality I myself have seen her great concern to the poor. My heartfelt condolences and prayers to the SJT Sisters, and to her family members.

Sr. Philo, her sister Milly my classmate we were all studying with the Bethany sisters in Taccode from 1st to 5th. She was 2 years junior to me. Their whole family we were connected with as her brother Lorry who went early to the Lord had milk business and my father too so there was lot of connection.Later Silu(Cyril) her brother used to come to cut grass from our compoud. Philu was very simple and very cute too so we were happy to play with her after the school when we go home. Even after she became a sister in St. Joseph of Tarbes during her home visit for 15 days she used to be active in the parish teaching hymns to the children etc. I used to go only for a day home and then I heard this good news from others. From the beginning she had been gentle, loving, caring and other centred. She was humble too. Did not boast about her positions. I have met her many times at NBCLC and for the last two to three years I met her at NBCLC, and at the Provincial of the sisters in Mysore for Sr. Rosy's golden jubilee. There 5 of us from Taccode met and we were happy to relate. Now as I heard that she passed away suddenly it shook me. So sad her brother passed away 6 months ago and now she goes. As she was self-effaced and even though in lime light lived rather hidden life to please the Lord and served the needy and poor. May the Lord embrace her in his heavenly abode giving her the eternal rest with Him alone.

I still remember when I met Sr. Philo a few times, years ago (1982-1985) at Jyothi Nivas, Bangalore, when I was pursuing my Philosophy studies. Her sisterly concern and inspiring words are still alive for me. Those were the decisive time in my seminary life. Sr. Philo strengthened my vocation with those inspiring words. Reflecting Sr. Philo's life, I can only say with J.K. Rowling "To the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure." She has taken this great adventure. As the hope of salvation is most important in our lives when death touches us, Sr. Philo trusted in the Lord and the salvation He offers us. May she be embraced with great love in heaven. Thank you so much for being the kindest and most pleasant principal I ever had. Thank you for taking notice of individual student interests even in a college of over 5000 students. I will never forget the enthusiasm with which you greeted each day - the same enthusiasm with which you congratulated a student on winning an intercollegiate event, arranged for solar lamps for an HIV patient's facility or posters to hang around the Zoology corridor. It takes a rare soul to be able to do that and I will forever be thankful to you.
