Joseph (Joe) Sylvester Castelino (90), husband of Jessie née Andrade, father of Shobha / Vishwanath Calidas (LA, Calif.), Sheila / Darryl Goveas (Mississauga, Canada) and Seema / Atul Roongta (Mumbai), passed away on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at his residence. Predeceased by his parents Athanasius Peter and Lucy, brothers Henry (Mississauga) and Girish (Kent, UK) and sister Mary Vaz (Geneva). Survived by brother Mohan (Ottawa, Canada) and sisters Sr Grace RGS (Bengaluru), Iris Menezes (Brampton, Canada), Rosy Mascarenhas and Dora Sequeira (Mumbai), grandchildren Avinash, Ashna, Akshay, Nathan & Nicole and numerous nephews and nieces.

Funeral service at 4.00 pm on Wednesday, January 23 in the Church of Our Lady of Health, Yari Road, Versova, Mumbai.

I am so sorry to hear of dear Uncle Joe's passing. He was related to me on my mother's side and was also my neighbour in Mahim when I lived at Ferreira Mansion and he at Nirvana. I remember his smiling face anytime I met him in those days. He was indeed a very kind man.

My wife Clareen and I are greatly saddened by the loss of my dearest brother Joe and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife Jessie, daughters Shobha, Sheila and Seema, and to my sisters, Sr. Grace, Iris, Rosy and Dora.
Joe had a full and fulfilling life. He was the beacon of the family who placed the interests of his family above his own needs and aspirations. He was kind, calm, cool and caring, gentle and giving, and sacrificed a great deal to ensure that our parents were properly cared for in their old age until they passed away; that his daughters got the best education and pursued a professional career he was greatly proud of; and that his much younger sister was married off and not left behind before he himself got married. Joe had a heart of gold. I remember my father often told us, using the famous Latin expression, Ite Ad Joseph [go ask Joe] whenever any of us was in need of money. So generous he was. His sterling qualities and pleasant disposition can never be excelled nor equaled by any of us, including me, and for that reason we all adored him.
Joe and I grew up together in Mangalore. Being just two years apart, together we did almost everything: tending to cattle, watering our dozen coconut trees, going on short trips and holidays, etc. We left Mangalore 71 years ago and for the next 13 years, until I left India 60 years ago, we were inseparable.
The loss of my brother Joe has catapulted me to the top of the clan on my paternal side, and it comes just two weeks after my much younger brother Girish passed away, which makes it harder still.
May the souls of both my brothers Joe and Girish rest in heavenly peace and glory.
