Do Social Networking Sites Affect Employees’ Productivity?

April 14, 2010

With social networking becoming popular there is growing apprehensions about these sites impede productivity. Many employers feel that accessing social networking sites during work hours is hampering employees' productivity. "When you are in office, you are expected to work productively and not to indulge in chatting with your friends, and relatives" says a CEO of leading corporate firm in India.

It is true that one should not deviate from his/her concentration from his official work to any other personal or social matters? That is in the rule book. But can it be a reality?  The answers to this question vary but are interesting.

"No way, if you need good productivity, then you need to be mentally balanced, free from tension, and should not feel that you are working within the restricted boundaries. While working, there should be room for accessing personal and social informationr" says a computer engineer who works for a multinational company in Bangalore.

A recent survey by a reputed agency in India shows that around 13% employee productivity in the corporate sector is lost every day due to of social networking sites during office hours. According to the survey, each day, a corporate employee spends at least 75 minutes of his productive time on various social networking sites (Orkut, Facebook, MSN, Tweeter and Chatting etc). The number is growing day by day which has compelled many IT companies to install software to keep an eye the employees' online activities.

But Employees strongly argue in favour of social networking sites and feel that such sites allow them connect with the rest of the world while they are at work. "It may take 5 to 10 minutes to recharge them into being productive at work, and remind them of life beyond the office" says an employee of corporate company who regularly uses networking sites.

Many employees say social networking can be beneficial as they might get ideas and develop new contacts, which will enhance their productivity. "Many companies restrict mobile phones, email access, or stepping out for lunch...so, how can they restrict social network too? It will be more like a prison if one has to work in such an atmosphere says a female employee of corporate company.

When valuable time is lost on surfing the net and chatting productivity is lost. One can argue that whole day being like a prisoner will give mental stress, where were these sites before man has been working since ages. A light music played will enlighten the atmosphere and increase the production.

Yes in the sense u think strongly feel that work and social issues can`t go together at the office or workplace. However, as someone else commented earlier, such social networking sites could be made available to the employees. then any one personally finish his work.

To have Social Networking Sites at work is as good as important today. Most of the companies have restrictions to some extent but one should not misuse of the facility. The junior level office staff are most addicted to misuse especially online chatting disturbs the concentration of office work which affect employees productivity.

With access to networking sites at work, the tendency to login is very high owing to the fact that we are all very human. And once logged-in, its an addiction. Definitely work will take a back-seat. There are professional networking sites like LinkedIN / Silicon India which are solely for professional connections which could be allowed. but personal networking sites like Orkut, Facebook will make the mind wander outside the regular norms and disciplines of the required mindset at work.

It certainly does, for it`s a sort of addiction, in that one constantly will have the tendancy to visit these networking sites in between and see what is posted in there, thus affecting their work schedules and productivity. The employees also cannot concentrate fully on their work because their mind will be diverted to some of the issues/matters covered and discussed in such social sites. I, therefore, strongly feel that work and social issues can`t go together at the office or workplace. However, as someone else commented earlier, such social networking sites could be made available to the employees by the Managements strictly during the tea and/or lunch times.

Yes it affects a lot.The reason is why, the people who are interacting on these sites mostly having similar kind of interests of presenting themselves in a pleasing way. So the competitive presenting of things lot of ideas regarding computer knowledge needed. once addicted to this kind of crazyness, lot of time will be spent behind to gain the knowledge. The people other than IT field not much advisable to go deep into these kind of activities and better concentrate on your office work and prosper.

While I dont believe in the word "productivity" social net working is a "social menace" of todays times. I think people do some charitable work rather than spending time on orkut, face book, twitter and so on. this is foolish to say the least.

Yes, they should be banned and I would like to share the 2 BIG reasons for it:1. Waste of timeSocial media are supposed to be a social experience. Create a profile and reach out to friends, old and new. Post something on your last trip to Goa, upload a photo album so others can view and comment! And when you are done with that browse through the recent s multitudes of friends circle, see what they are up to. And just when you are about to wind up, oh, a friend just logged in, too, so now you can chat. Two hours are since you first logged on and left to wonder how the time passed so quickly. You should get back to work! Moreover, these social networks are so conspicuously designed the masses are left unaware of how much time has been lost.2. SecurityEven though there is no direct link to productivity, security is a huge issue surrounding all social networking sites. What makes these sites great i.e. freedom to post what's on your mind, discussion on the day's hot topics,

Social Networking sites are such a wonderful place, meet all friends from childhood to collge days, we start remembering those days and forget evrything at that moment. This is definately affect our work. Every company should have policy, not to give access to social networking site at work place.
GILBERT, Abu Dhabi
At Lunch break it is okay, but few of the employees attend office only to spend their time on social networking and gossiping.
Aftab Sheikh, Muscat
Come on! If you are really committed to your work any social website or anything else cannot affect your productivity. For example if there is no internet connection available in some office and can you claim that all your employees are giving their full productivity??? Its only COMMITMENT and LOYALTY towards the work can effect your productivity.
LANCY D' COSTA, MANGALORE
No because the connectivity with social network is also very important for better performence in the working area. Toomuch is to bad. In case it is toomuch then only it is bad or affecr productivity.

Office hours are meant for office work. No personal talk or personal contacts are allowed.May be sometime it is necessary to talk, Supervisor’s approval be obtained. Whether you work or not your time is paid for. You are using company’s property hence you cannot decide to use it for your personal work.
Manjunatha C.N., Bangalore
No, I dont think it affects one's productivity. Actually when there is lot of work it is better to take short breaks, so that it freshens us up. During that break if we browse the net and do a bit of chatting, it actually will increase our productivity because we will be rejuvenated and can give our 100. It like a recharge.
rakesh, bangalore
its truth we should work for productivity but when there is free time we go for chating ... think that we are employee for that company ot salve!!!
Shashank Pai, Mangalore
I do not feel that it affects productivity cos for me personally i finish my work atleast 2 to 3 hrs before my log out time... what do i do then sitting at office cos u cannot log out before the log out time... And then i cant sleep in office also even though i am in night shift cos that then will be violation of rules so we need some entertainment which comes thru such social networking sites alone.
Lawrence , Udupi
No, coz it breaks your concentration from your work,if you have any connectivity with social networking sites it will get full control on you, you are waiting for reply from the person you are connected from that site. It will badly effect on your job and also daily life.Very good example is you can't get control while standing in 2 boats in river. You have to leave/sacrifice any one sooner or later. You need break while working but this idea is very bad from my point of view.
Grace Lopes, Bahrain
This in turn should affect your productivity in a positive way. As for me, being around my friends makes me more productive and thus, though a soley personal opinion, I disagree that social networking sites would hamper productivity.

Only if Networking is done during office hours, it affects productivity

Infact the productivity will be more if the networking sites are allowed which work as stress reliever. Yes they should be used very judiciously.

Anything done moderately will not hurt anybody, so also in office if you can limit the use of social networking to break times, I am sure nobody will mind, coz thru networking you can even find solutions to work issues
Ethan A.Hans, Florida/Mangalore

Im my opinion it is a No as when the Internet facility was introduced there were companies which had a limited the access but now a days it is become a necessity, if a person really wants to be networking or sort of addicted he has the opportunity just to buy an Blackberry or similar phones and be in touch, So does it mean as an employer he has the right to keep his employees busy during his off duty hours I personally know people who have returned back the blakberry phone to the company which wanted them to be on line 24/7, every one should realise finally we are humans and humans are social being and every one is responsible to his own action.

It is just a present fad which will wear out soon just like others. If you really want to be strict employer in that case do not let anyone carry their mobiles to work,or have an screened call system in the office , watch them with CCTV etc, then you will see what your productivity comes too.

VR Desouza, Miyar
No I dont think there will be any downfall in productivity, where else it keeps u engaged in so much areas and keeps you always charged and active which will boost your performanceVR D'souza,Soponn, Miyar and Bajagoli
