Udupi: Tulu Symposium, Exhibition of Ornaments, Dresses, Medicines Inaugurated
News: Shekhar Ajekar Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)
Udupi, Nov 21: The two-day programme of symposium, exhibition, demonstration of ornaments, dresses and native medicines of Tuluvas was inaugurated at M G M College premises here in the morning of Saturday, November 21. This programme is being organized as part of Vishwa Tulu Sammelan being organized at Ujire from December 10 to 13.
After the 'Tulunada Dibbana' was taken out, veteran writer and thinker, Erya Laxminarayan Alva, along with wife, Anandi Alva and Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari, Dr D Veerendra Heggade, inaugurated the programme by lighting an earthen lamp in the 'Tibila' placed in the traditional 'Gerase'.

In his inaugural address, Erya Laxminarayan Alva said that Dr Veerendra Heggade has earned a permanent place in the hearts of the people because of the lead he has taken in bringing Tulu folk culture to the fore again. He called upon everyone living in Tulunadu, whether they are Tuluvas or not, to come together and make the Vishwa Tulu Sammelan a grand success.
Dr Veerendra Heggade, who presided over the function, said that the 'Beary' community is found only in the undivided Dakshina Kannada district and that the community represents the relationship the region has with the Arab countries. "Unless we rejuvenate the basic energey of Tuluvas, as the time passes, there is a risk of it dying down. Hence, we should breathe life into the ancient culture and observations of Tuluvas. We should go back to our roots and understand our noble culture and its sublimity," he stressed.

"Look back at your roots," is the message of the Sammelan, he said, and advised the people to not only feel happy about their heritage, but also not to forget their roots wherever they go.
Surendra Kumar, Harshendra Kumar, entrepreneur Pramod Madhwaraj, MLA K Raghupati Bhat, municipal president, Dinkar Shetty Herga, former MP, Vinay Kumar Sorake, Tulu Sammelan secretary, Yashovarma, Anandi Alva, Arunkuar S R etc., were present.
Prof H Krishna Bhat welcomed. Muddu Moodubelle presented the programme. Y M Shetty proposed vote of thanks.

In the golden olden days Tuluvas of Dakshina Kanara consisting of different castes & religions were given equal importance as a community. They respected one another’s castes & religions, participated in their marriages, festivals & religious programmes by exchanging pleasantries.
During a Muslim marriage the non Muslims were welcomed with respect by sprinkling rose water on them. They were offered separate & better seats and also they bring gifts in the form of a full bunch of banana, rice-moore and other essential requirement of the day including monetary gifts. In return the host offer them tender coconut, tray of beetle leaves, sweet meats & Non-Veg lunch for those who eat mutton/chicken.
On their special occasions, the non-Muslims too reciprocate the similar ways towards the Muslims. In those periods all the members of a village were very thick of friends and they share their good & bad times by helping one another. |

| Few exclusive phoggraphs of the artifacts only would have been better. The Tuppe is fine, but not like the shape and perfection I used to see in my Aba's house a long time ago. If someone exhibits Catholic old time costume of bride, groom, kirgi/bazu/old pidduk, kanachim kudkam, ansa kankna, mugud etc etc. will be nice. |
