Mangalore, Nov 10: Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) bagged the second prize in solid waste management at a national-level conference in Kolkata, recently.
 
Speaking in a press meet at the mayor’s chamber in MCC on Monday November 9, Mayor Shankar Bhat said that the city’s good management of solid waste and people-friendly project helped it bag the award. 

“The award, instituted by the Centre for Quality Management System of Jadhavpur University, Kolkata, was presented by Sugatha Roy, union minister of state for urban development, at the international conference on solid waste management at Jadhavpur University”, he said.
 
“The first place and the ‘Icon City Award’ went to Mysore City Corporation. The conference was an eye-opener to solid waste management and there were paper presentations and discussions on waste management”, said commissioner Dr K N Vijay Prakash. 

He said that at the conference solid waste was termed unused thrown resources which can be used to produce alternative energy, by-products, and value-added products.

The commissioner also received the excellence award for his paper presentation on solid waste management at the conference.   

“Even we have deficiency in managing solid waste to some extent but necessary arrangements have been taken”, said the commissioner, adding that the state government had provided Rs 1 crore to expand the dumping yard to enable handling 200 metric tonnes of solid waste per day.
 
“There is a plan to set up gravity and magnetic vibrators to segregate the contents from the solid waste. A well-known person in the field of solid waste management will visit the city in a couple of days to study the feasibility of recycling contents separated from the waste”, said Dr Prakash.
