Mangalore, Nov 4: In a first of its kind, Mangalore north police nabbed nine people red-handed for moral policing on Wednesday November 4.

The guilty were involved in a vigilante attack on the premises of the Government First Grade College in Car Street with the issue being a relationship between two students of different religions.

The arrested all belong to the Bajrang Dal and one of them had earlier been booked in the pub attack case carried out by the Sri Rama Sene. Charan Kumar, Puneeth Raj, Ranjith Raj, Nishith, Ganesh, Mithun, Kishore, Raveesh, and Bharath, are the nine accused.

All the arrested were involved in moral policing on the college premises by assaulting, threatening, and abusing A R Suhail (20), a student of the college. The assailants were allegedly displeased at his friendship with a Hindu girl, who is a fellow student.

Prof Radhakrishna, principal of the college, said that he saw a crowd inside the institution and grasping the situation took necessary action by calling them to a meeting to solve the matter. But by that time they had already assaulted the student.

Amith Singh, assistant superintendent of police, said that prompt information from the college helped the police act immediately and it is a great achievement that the arrests were made on the spot.

The culprits have been booked for rioting, wrongful restraint, voluntarily causing hurt, intentional insult with intent to provoke, breach of peace, and criminal intimidation, under the Indian Penal Code.

A student of the college said that a group of three students who have close connections with the Bajrang Dal activists are behind this incident.

Shabeer, Shridhar..., Please leave it to the Parents of the wards to address such matters. May be they are outspoken parents with a broad oulook unlike you two guys. Parents are the best judge and guide.

MR. Shridar, Bangalore, very well said. Teen aged guys n gals should be working hard for their future. But I have a question to you. BD are only attacking Muslim Guys..Why is it? There are so many Hindu boys n gals roaming together, y dont they attack them?. If you r justifying the above said incident, u should also agree with me. Just think how biased r BD guys, they only want to attack other community, thats it. But i agree with u, School/college students shud strive hard for academic career than such activities.

Robin, Kundapura The answer is, The law of KSA (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) is not biased or unfair in this case. No man & woman irrestpective of religion/ belief can mingle. The law forbids it and the law makers will lookafter it and not some goondas like BD.

Nobody has a right to beat anybody's children in the name of moral policing. If anything against the law then we have law/ police department to take care of. If these moral police guys are so concerned then they must visit the parents of concerned students to inform the situation. Parents are the best to tackle these issues. If they wish they can seek help from these moral activists.

No parent wants their children thrashed in public! If you ask me I will deal with whatever my son/ daughter does. I have not given any right to anyone to beat my son/daughter. What mangalore police has done here is "Clean Up Act". I appreciate this. In fact it shuould have been started long ago.

I am sure that the goons will be released in no time, thanks to their 'Godfathers'. Someone commented earlier that 'education' will eradicate the malaise. I think the problem is not education or the financial well being. It is more to do with the addiction to raw 'power' and 'do-anything-and-get-away-with-it" phenomena, which is a strong attraction to the local scum with low self esteem. It is nearly equivalent to Hitler's recruitment of Nazi die-hards. I think we will see a good bit more of their antiques in the coming days. CM is struggling to hold on to his seat.

Not sure how his party will sustain these goons. If they turn out to be loose cannons with no direction and 'leadership' we will face more damage in the coastal region. I hope they open their eyes (including my dear friend Nagesh) and see the writing on the wall. People by and large do not subscribe to the weird, decadent philosophy of fundamentalism. Made amply clear in the recent elections. Meanwhile, we pray that better counsel prevails.

Congratualtions to the Principal and the staff of the college for their swift action. The Police Dept. also deserves appreciation in this matter. Why Bajrang Dal always has only DISTRUCTION AND VIOLENCE in their agenda. Why can't they devote their time in the field of eduction, helping the poor and needy, visiting the orphanages and sponsoring their meals etc. Bajrang Dal please think of these issues, then God will shower his blessings on you. Put a full stop to violence. Better late than never.

Just arresting these criminals is not enough .. parade them in public and whip them. It is really funny that a band of vagabonds have been openly harassing the public until now. Mangaloreans know how to conduct ourselves in every walk of life and do not need assistance from these characters.
Comment on this message

Shridhar, BangaloreThursday, November 05, 2009
Mr. Shahnawaz Kukkikatte, you have mentioned in your comment that "Wake up guys, tomorrow the victims could be your children". For your kind information, if any of our sons does love with girl of other religion, or any of ours daughters does love with boy belongs to another religion, we will put them out of our home forever, and we wont give them any of the rights too. So, no one need not to inform guys or girls that what they should do. In teen age, both boys and girls should study hard and try to get a job, not roaming with boys or girls.

The moral police are using immoral methods to ensure morality! what irony! These are just some good-for-nothing goons who have neither the knowledge nor any love for Hinduism which I personally regard as a great religious way of life... What saddens me most is those 'literate' uneducated lot who support them which includes a few who have posted their comments here. Education has not even gone skin deep for these ignorant people... 'Love Jehad' is a misnomer and just rubbish created by vested interests that i don't want to name here.

Give everyone good quality education and create employment opportunities. There wont be any Bajrangis, love jehad or conversion. Problem will be solved forever. All those who devide societies are ruthless people and be death on them. If you cant love your neighbour, please dont hate him either. Live and let live in peace. The party which promoted hate, invented lies is dying. Is it not a great news? The Bajrangis will vanish like bubles of water with the exit of BJP from Karnataka. Thats the latest prophecy.

I have seen pictures of Bajrang Dal activists taking out morchas and agitations in Mangalore. All of them look like rogues and anti social elements. I will be surprised if any of them is a graduate. Do we have to learn our morals from uneducated goondas. I need to recite a famous line from the Bible for my Bajrang Dal friends. “Let the person among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone” ( John 8:7 ) Karnataka is already going through a rough time. Bad roads, floods, rising prices, bad governance now Bajrang Dal. God Help Karnataka.

Dear All, One thing I fail to understand, why do we ever blame / promote religion? Comment on the matter propose corrective steps not destructive. Our Indian mentality is erroneous let's build nation not religion. Who are we to judge whether India belongs to Muslims / Hindus / Christians / Etc. Live & let live buddies all of us have contributed towards our country’s growth. Start from our houses (Charity begins at home) do we ever educate our kids on patriotism? There was a time we used to proudly stand for ‘National Anthem’ & adore the ‘National Flag’ do we have it in us now? NRI kids??? Yes, India belongs to those who respect Indian culture.

Various groups have been formed each group feels they are fighting for justice, why? We aren’t united as Families / Relatives / Friends / Mangaloreans / Kannadigas / Indians. Let’s correct our present for the future. Our Mangalore is becoming famous but for the wrong cause. We Mangaloreans are branded to be courageous not cowards. Now let’s decide!!!

Practically the Bajrang Dal is like an industry which generates employement for goons. The reason why these thugs indulge in these activities is because this is their livelihood, they earn their daily wages by organizing Attacks, moral policing, propoganda and riots.

The bajrangdal are a bunch of cowards. To really be brave, one needs to fight one on one, and not groups of people agianst one person, and for this, these fellows, need to be sent to Indo-pak border to fight on border. Then, their bajrang dal will become dal fry!

Police have done a commendable job by arresting the culprits on spot. The person who informed the police will certainly praiseworthy and receive the blessings of all peace loving people. Culprits have been charged under several sections of IPC, but yet to see how they are going to press the charges when BJP is in power. If the police department wants to have a clean record they have to book all the goons and see that our land is safe internally.

Roshan Mangalore & Nagesh Nayak, Central congress can buy your P.P Hegde in no time. Congress won’t involve in these small issues and congress never into caste, religion. Do you think only minorities’ elected congress in central? Real goondas are those who provoke or offer something to these accused people to play monkey games. All nine accuses may be illiterates, rickshaw drivers or same grade workers so, obviously how they know college mates (girls and boys) mingle each other for college activities.

Abdul Rahman, DubaiThursday, November 05, 2009

Mr. Roshan, The fatwa against vande mataram is very justifiable. Do not judge our patriotism by asking us to sing vande mataram, of course we don't have to prove it to anyone. Vande mataram is a Hindu devotional song where one is bowing in front of a hypothetical mother called Bharath Matha.

There is no one called Bharath Matha, India is a geographical area and we love both the physical land and the people living within India. We Muslims bow our heads only in front of our Creator, none else, not even in front of our biological mothers. Before asking us to sing vande mataram, it is better if you glance a bit of its history, the full song and the purpose for which it was written.

Manoj Mangalore, I can give you clear answer on your comments because I live in Saudi Arabia. Moral Policing in Saudi cannot be compared with the atrocities by the Bajrangis,in the recent past even Saudi government have curbed the responsibilities of the moral polices due to opposition from the public. How can you compare Saudi and India, you are talking about Sky and Earth, we are in democratic country and Kingdom is ruled by the King, that is not a democratic country.

You can ask with Millions of Non-Muslims in Saudi have they been treated by the moral policer's like the BD members treat the minorities. Why not BD members’ attack the boys individually instead of group because they fear that they are cowards.
