Mangalore: An Aged Mother’s Saga of Caring for Mentally Challenged Offspring
Daijiworld Media Network—Mangalore (RS/CN)

Mangalore, Nov 4:  It is perhaps the fate of an elderly mother to spend her life caring for four mentally challenged children. The 70-year-old woman refuses to lose faith and hopes that one day someone will help them all.

Sarojini has spent over four decades looking after three of her children and a grandchild. A small house near Bolor Sulthan Battery is the only asset in her name and even that is being disputed by her own relatives and a court case is on in the matter.

Of her six children, four were born mentally challenged. Her eldest daughter Yogini passed away at the age of 48, while second daughter Yashoda (46), son Jagadeesha (43) and daughter Shobha (42), require her constant care.

Her youngest daughter Laxmi died at the age of 19. Her son Raghuveer’s child, who is 13 years of age, is also mentally challenged.

Raghuveer works in a plywood factory and has to shoulder all the financial responsibilities of his family. Given his limited income, he has difficulty meeting even essential medical expenses.

He has to resort to borrowing or just go without fulfilling the requirement.

Sarojini lost her husband 35 years ago and since then she has single-handedly taken care of the whole family which lives in the ancestral house situated on four cents of land. She has spent a lot of money trying to get her children rehabilitated, but there has been no success.

As the years pass, old age is making it hard for her to take up any kind of work. She needs help from others.

The newspaper ‘Jayakirana’ has contributed three years of rice for the family through its owner Prakash K Pandeswar.

Our social responsibility is provoked by this report. It's time for So called Hindu protectors to show their Hindu developmental program or Hindu support activities to the general public. We are all having mis conception of these Hindu groups as they are anti-peace elements. Instead of fighting for fake things focus your activities into finishing off dowry system, caste system etc..

Millions of people in our surroundings needs help from the society. Someone may in need of Medicine, Someone may in need of money to pay his debt, some others waiting for their children to be get married and list continues. A great determination from your organisation can change life of millions.

Thank you Daijiworld for covering this story and also providing the account numbers fr quick transfers. This is what media should do and Kudos to Daijiworld team and the reporters. I also have a suggestion. I saw a couple of articles like this before but I cannot find it now. If all these kind of articles were grouped into a quick link that would be helpful. And also followups on how these people have been helped of the financial problems if they indeed were would be great too.

Dear Daijiworld team, Thanks to you good people for putting forward the needs of people in dire situations. This picture is worth a thousand words,as it expresses the sorrow in this poor mother. It is the duty of every human being irrespective of caste, religion or creed to help the widows, orphans & the needy & in doing this we are blessed more.

Words of consolation can help only through monetary contribution to needy causes such as these. Let us all do our bit & make this world a better place to live in & coexist as one people.

Very sad story, I appreciate the mother for courage and patience. It is the responsibility of every citizen to help them what ever they can. Instead of fighting each other let all the religious and political people get together to help these ill-fated people.

Dear BJD Members, I appreciate your efforts to protect the Hindu Religion by stopping conversion but your primary attention is needed here. Without adequate protection, anybody can subject these mentally challenged members of your community to indecent abuse. Once the old monther perishes, they may have to live out of begging.

Reserve your labour to protect them than wasting away your energy/resources towards those who are able enough to choose the way of life they want to live. Nevertheless, my heartiest sympathies are with the aging mother.
