Mangalore: Dress Code - Stalemate Continues in Bantwal, Dispute Resolved in Uppinangady
Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SP)
Mangalore, Aug 22: While the Uppinangady government college Development and Monitoring Committee, headed by Puttur MLA Mallika Prasad, has resolved the issue of wearing head scarves by taking a decision, that the Muslim girls can wear head scarves while attending the college, subject to the condition that they should remove the burkhas at the ladies room before attending the class and that the colour of the scarves should conform to the colour of the prescribed uniform.
At the same time, stalemate continues at SVS College located at Vidyagiri, Bantwal, against the management of which, a complaint has been lodged by a student named Aysha Asmin, stating that she is not being allowed to attend classes with head scarves on. Student Union president of the College, Bharat Kulal, who is said to have been behind the ban on head scarves enforced by the management, lodged a complaint with the policemen on Thursday, saying that he has been receiving threat calls from various numbers from a person in Tulu. Some of them are from international numbers, he stated. Bharat claimed that some vested interests are trying to malign the college.
Principal of the college, Seetaram Mayya also claimed that he has a feeling that he is being closely watched, since the day the controversy erupted. He said, he proposes to lodge a complaint with the policemen, even though he has not received any threat calls so far.
The issue is receiving lot of attention in various quarters, with some quarters claiming that wearing of head scarf is not mandated by Islam. Some also claim that the ban imposed on wearing of head scarves is in conformity with a recent judgement of the Supreme Court, which has said that exhibiting of religious faiths in educational institutions is undesirable. There have also been people who strongly feel that the authorities should allow the students to wear what they want.

Way to go Uppinangady Govt. College! To live a life of religious tolerance is more than just agreeing with the concept. As Gandhi said, we must be the change we wish to see in the world. Promoting diversity is not a passive undertaking. It must be fully grasped and celebrated by each individual to ensure maximum impact. We must live the principles we believe stand up for what we think is just speak our minds, even if our voices shake and remember that the appreciation for religious diversity comes in the form of our actions as well as our thoughts. Every word, every hand, every embrace makes a difference.

Dear Mr.D''Souza Uppinagadi college is government college not a private owned or any community based college. There is no rule or prospectus saying that scarf is not allowed. There is no law in the present situation which bans this. Let the govt make a law on this like french govt, we all follow this. It is absolutely not a good idea to tell someone to study in community school when wearing scarf is not an offense as per law.

This issue has unnecessarily been blown out of proportion, where in could have been solved with a mutual dialogue with respective authorities. I urge the Muslim friends to stop creating mess in the public minds and thereby maintaining peace and harmony in the society.

Hats off to you Mr. Mallika Prasad, not because you have allowed the scarf but because you stepped in on time to solve the problem instead of prolonging it and the situation getting out of control. We need more people like you in educational field. Thank you and wish you a peaceful and prosperous life to serve the country.

Its heartening to know that the Uppinangady Govt. College has resolved the Scarf Issue in a pleasnat and justified manner giving no room to malign the situation to anybody. I salute the wisdom of the college authorities and their logical approach to solve the problem. on the other hand if the threat calls to student leader of SVS College are true, then the police should look into the matter seriously, but in my openion the so called threat calls and "Discmfort" felt by the princpal of the SVS college is a new "twist" to the drama to divert the attention from the main ISSUE.

This is a perfect example of- "to make a mountain out of a mole hill." A small issue which could have been easily resolved has been blown out of proportion. The girl and her family could have easily resolved the matter instead of creating tension for everyone.
