Panaji, Jul 30:
Goa will finally have a policy framework for its sports and sportsmen through a meticulously designed policy which is likely to be passed next month in the state cabinet.

Sports minister Manohar Asgaonkar in a reply during the ongoing state legislative assembly session assured that in August, the policy would be passed. The minister was cornered by opposition for his utter failure to nurture the portfolio.

Asgaonkar said that sports policy was long due for the state and hence the department took up the steps to finalise it as soon as possible.

Stating that the thrust will be given to sportsmen in the policy, the minister said that five per cent reservations in job would be there for the sportsmen.

The state government also intends to make physical education and sports, a compulsory subject in the educational institutes from fifth to 12 standard. “Those who attend the sports camp would be given relaxation in their attendance in the school,” Asgaonkar said.

The sportsmen will also enjoy five per cent reservation till graduation in all the educational institutes and streams. Asgaonkar said that five per cent marks would be added to the marksheet of the students who are active in sports.

Those students who miss the exams, except board question papers, would be allowed to attend the papers once they are back from the sports event.
