Saffron Flags Protect Christian Houses in Kandhamal

NUAGAON (Orissa), Apr 10: Months after the bloody riots targeting Christians in the area, saffron flags flutter atop houses on both sides of the roads
linking this village to Raikia and Baliguda blocks in Kandhamal district.

Banners proclaiming the celebration of 'Hindu Nava Barsa' and 'Panchu Danda Samabesh' (a local tribal festival) are in evidence some yards from the Divya Jyoti Pastoral Centre here, which was attacked by a mob in the wake of the killing of VHP leader Swami Laxmananda Saraswati and four of his associates.

The mob had also assaulted the priest living in the centre Thomas Chalan besides allegedly raping the nun residing in it. The centre is locked now.

The saffron flags on houses are to be seen in plenty as one drives from the district headquarters town of Phulbani to interior areas.

But these flags are not an indication of local Christians changing their religion but have been hoisted to protect them from the ire of right wing outfits.

In some villages, Hindus have placed the saffron flags on the houses of their Christian neighbours for their protection, while at some places Christians themselves put them out of fear, villagers said.

"We cannot remove these flags. These saffron flags are a 'rakshya kabach (safeguard) for our houses and property, said Sita Mallick of Raika area. A crucifix around her neck proclaims her religion.

"Praying to my god under the saffron flag does not mean I have changed my faith," the 45-year-old woman says.

Like Sita many prefer not to remove the flags from their houses.

"Who will protect our houses? Can the police guard all our houses?" asked another staying at a the relief camp here.

The local Sangh Parivar leaders do not mind the sprouting of saffron besides the roads.

"What is wrong if saffron flags fly on every house in Kandhamal?" asks a local youth saying that no one was being forced to reconvert.

"Controlling the situation and protecting the life of people is on top of the agenda of the police," said Kandhamal Superintendent of Police Pravin Kumar.

"The situation has been peaceful for over five months now," he added.

Over 40 people were killed in the communal violence in the district last year.

Dear Mr. Nagesh Nayak Bangalore, You are similar to Lakshmananda Saraswathi who was a proselytizer providing the waste of cows to apply and drink human beings although his killing was wrong which was by the Maoists freely infiltrated from china and Nepal creating havoc inside the country. BJP supported Maoists in the recent elections in the Chhattisgarh. A couple of weeks before Maoists hit back to BJP by destroying police station and some other houses in Chhattisgarh. Secondly, I am here to protect you Mr. Nagesh Nayak even if anybody chases you to kill. If you are a criminal then I will hand over to police. If police release you then I am not responsible in the aftermath. Thirdly do you know what is the reason kaar sevaks were burnt? For what they indulge in instigating, insulting and molesting the old man and his daughter at the railway station boutique. Are they kaar sevaks?

I think these flags may be planted in infiltration areas to protect our country from enemies. Shedding innocent blood of soldiers is avoided.

Mr Navin Sinha, I am Shahnawaz Kukkikatte from Dubai, I am not mr.S.M. Nawaz Kukkikatte, We are two different prople. Mr Sinha, as Mr Simon advised to you, we love peace and you have come from Patna to pursue your education. Please dont fish in the troubled water. Let our Mangalore remain peaceful for our future generation. Your knowledge of this area and people of this area is very much limited. We dont need a governement where people have to hoist their saffron flag to protect themselves from threats and from risking hardline fundamentalists.

What type of democracy you are taling about. We are in Islamic arab country and I travel a lot between them. We Indians from different faith and culture are respected and protected here. You mean to say just to save yourself you have to discard your clothes and wear saffron cloth. What freedom you are advocating about. Even during British rule people were free to practice their faith. Dont please dont spread hatred.

Use this platform to bridge the gap and promote peace, love and understanding. Let me tell you, communualism promotoes terrorism. Terrorism promotes alienation. We dont want to devide the society on communual lines. please use this forum for beringing peace to mangalore

It is unfortunate that India is following the path which other countries have been doing even today. For thousands of years except the Mogul period and Portugese occupation of Goa, Indians enjoyed absolute freedom of religion. All religions flourished during those days. But now the days have changed. We Indians have become same as what Malaysians are doing to their minorities, similar to what Russian theocratic governments are doing to the minority religions.

The fate of christians in Orissa is same as the cricketer Yousaf Youhanna of Pakistan, who was a christian, but later converted for the sake of his passion for cricket.

Mr.S.M. Nawaz Kukkikatte, udupi .. you can't change. you people even not able to see what's good happening in your surroundings, and if some thing goes wrong immeidately jump into the arena. to tell good things and to do good things it should come from inside. no body able to change. by themselves only. all of your sayings like rose in one hand and another hand behind knife. better good people only look into it to save this country

I'm sorry to say practcing owns religeon fearlessly has become impossible in our secular country. And if a nun is raped by the priest, its nuns duty to complain to the respective authorities, not the duty of the thugs who are on their toes to hurt christians and their sentiments. I would like to tell the police, its time for action, not statements.

This is very tragedy, because india is a democretic country and also a secular country.According to the indian constitution, every citizen of india have a equal right. he\she have a liberal to believe any faith. Asper our constitutionally all the religious have equal power or freedom to teach and practice their religion. Moreover india is famous for their democatic value, great civilization which ruled by many kings from differnt cammunity and the same time their governors from different cammunity ( for egbeerbal in akbars kingdom, also the muslims and chrsthans in krshnadevaraya's palace so that we can get many examples from our great history.)all together our india's credibility is the great culture of unity in diversity. but today the indian citizen is practising or proclaiming something even against their will or faith only for their self defence, it means they are not secure or safe in india by their faith or by identifying by their religion. is it very tragedy and very shame to our great indian civilization, culture as well as the democracy.
