Mangalore, Mar 27: The long wait is almost over. It is salvation time for sunken vessel DenDen. The salvage operations of DenDen have been taken up after almost two years after it sunk off Tannirbavi beach near here.

As reported extensively in these columns earlier, DenDen, the Eritrean ship had sunk of Tannirbavi beach on June 23, 2007 after developing technical snags while on its way to Dubai from NMPT. The ship had developed technical snags in the middle of the sea on June 22, 2007 night. However, it was later driven to the shores after it got caught in fierce whirlwind and heavy rains on the next day. Despite efforts by Coast Guards and others, three sailors had drowned while the others were rescued by locals.

Eversince the place had become a tourist spot as visitors flocked Tannirbavi beach to have a glimpse of the sunken vessel. Though decision to undertake salvage operations had been taken several times, nothing had materialised owing to several reasons. Even the officials from Eritrea who had come to the city, had dropped plans to salvage the ship after visiting the spot.

Now almost after two years, Gujarat-based Fair Deal Supplies Ltd company has come forward to salvage the ship. The officials of the company have expressed confidence that the ship will be pulled to the shores within the next two days before the salvage operations are undertaken at Tannirbavi beach.

Harish Chandwani of Fair Deal Company is leading the operations while Mohammad Nawaz of the city-based City Steel Company has bagged the contract.

At first the ship will be pulled to the shores with the help of huge chains and Vinz machine. A crane to has been positioned by the shores to help pulling the sunken ship. Almost 30 labourers from Gujarat and the city are engaged in the salvage operations.

I am working in a marine based company in kuwait.Even for a small job to carry ,workers have to possess the peresonnel protective equipments otherwise they are not permitted. I am sad to see that when such big operations are going on without ppe.I urge the coastal guards to have a view on this .Otherwise while salvaging the ship some innocent have to bare his /her life. Thanks daiji for the coverage .

Very unprofessional appraoch - None of the people seen in the picture are wearing any protective gear - eg. Safety Shoes / Boiler suits / helmets etc., India has advanced but still in the stone age - a visit to the Billion Dollar ship breaking indistry in Gujarath will give you an idea of the safety / health standards.
