Mangalore: Weeds within - Seven Arrested for Damaging Church Property

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Mar 19: In connection with indulging in rampage in a banana plantation belonging to Babbukatte Nityadhar Church and trying to disrupt peace in the region, Ullal policemen arrested seven persons on Wednesday March 18.

They are Jayson Verghese (23), Vijit Sunny Rozario (21), Araki Alfred (20), Roshan Cutinho (26), all from Nityadhar Nagar and Ronald Roshan (22), a resident of Kuttar Prakash Nagar. They were produced in the court on Wednesday.

On Monday morning, the banana plantation was found to have been damaged heavily to look as if people belonging to a particular community had barged into the plantation, and a saffron flag had been planted there, signifying that Hindu outfits had been involved with the destruction. The incident took place at a time when Hindu Samajotsav was being organized in the city.

The policemen said that during interrogation, the arrested persons revealed, they wanted to disturb the peace in the region by projecting the incident as a handiwork of a particular community.

Banana Plantation that was damaged

While making inquiries about those who inflicted the above damage, the policemen could by chance, lay their hands on the two accused, who had burnt down a motor bike on November 30 near Pandit House. Joy D'Souza (20) and Calvin Johnson D'Souza, from Nityadhar Nagar, accused of this act, were arrested and produced in the court on Wednesday. The policemen are also looking at the possibility of these two having been also involved with the destruction of the banana plantation.

Under the guidance of the city rural inspector Lingappa Poojary, Ullal sub-inspector of police Shivprakash has been conducting investigation.

Kudos to the Ullal police. Let us hope the Police goes to the bottom of this and publish the findings. These are all just scapegoats. The real villiians are enjoying behind the scene. Hope there is a confession from the churches and that they take true responsibility.

This is a challenge to all christian fanatics. Come out in the open and fight . This kind of shameful and cowardly action can be expected from jokers who believe earth is 6000 years old sold to these dimwits by a fertiliser salesman.

Religion, religion, religion. are you all going to take this when you die. please stop all this hate comments to other communities. this is going to create more problem in Managalore, keep the politics out of these. If you do so, you will end up having problems every day. fight between communities will become daily news.

Be human, everyone has friends from other community, if this continues you may end up having enemies every corner and no more friends from other community. I think daijiworld should stop this comment column so that people read the news and understand what happens in mangalore. Here people are coming to put their hated comments and not understanding real problem in mangalore.

This is Journalists practicing real Secularism. I like the title. It is very encouraging to see how the Church and Christian community in general (except instances like Kandhamal ..ban DaVinci etc) is handling weeds within itself - be it homosexuality or paedophilia or sexual abuse of women. There was no fatwa issued...and the issue handled head on. BRAVO! I hope the heads of other religions and other newspaper learn something from this act of Daijiworld. CNN-IBN, NDTV , Times of India , The Hindu should hang their heads in shame.

After a very very long time I'm reading a news item which is so honestly presented in such a daring way.Not only the news, even the caption "Weeds within" was so appropriate and telling! A paper run by a Christian person/Organisation putting out a news item which is so damaging to their own ilk,not only shows courage but also proves what is meant by calling "journalism" as a sacred profession! Perhaps news of this kind may bring-in greater understanding among communities! I wish this particular news story was made as a "Case Study" to the Journalism Colleges. Hoorah Daiji World,Keep it up and keep the Torch of honest journalism burning!

To Mr. Charles D'Mello, Pangala and M.Bhat, Mumbai. If educated and grown men like both of you cannot put aside your differences and come together for the common cause of peace and communal harmony in our country, then I can't imagine what the future will bring.

I think the best way to figure out who is behind this is to subject Franklyn Monteiro to a narco analysis test (outside karnataka - you cant trust the authorities here). The truth will automatically come out

Is this M. Bhat guy serious? We all know which politic-religious organisation has been spewing hatred and formenting communal riots (and getting away with it scot free as well) on a rather regular basis. His holier than thou attitude amuses me.

I wonder if he has been in Mangalore lately - he could have seen the handiwork of his angel friends in his own eyes. If he were in Mumbai in 1992 as well, may be he could remember the gala time his friends had. A few miles further north lies Gujarat - 2002 also showcased the peace loving nature of M.Bhat and co. Not to mention Khandamal 2008. Need I say more?

Its is extremely painful to see how our youth are being misguided to seek a wrong destiny! Even the mother nature is not spared! Are these young boys deserve to be on police records at their young age? These young boys deserve to be educated, get good jobs, enhance their social living, taught to dream big, engage in community service and be partner in making our great Country a superpower by 2020. I pray that all Mangaluru people get united to live togeather happily as Mangalurians.

A classic example of opposing for the sake of opposing and gaining cheap attention of daijiworld readers. Grow up and show some maturiy.

It is a simple fact, people take advantage of any division in the society for their own benefits and politicians excel at that. We should remain united and not a give a chance for that to happen. We should not be quick to judge (including this incident) and look at both sides of any equation. One party is not better than the other, let us candidates who will do good for the region, state and country and not by our religious convictions or caste/sub-caste considerations or any other prejudices.

Reader Cletus Sequeira made a very responsible comment. I think parents of these boys are partly responsible but who knows could be friends or political circle harmed them. We may see this kind of people in any relition with a movitive behind in disturbing the peace. Reardless of any reltion, such peopel should be identified and punished. These boys are in their early 20's need good advice, rehabilitation. Let us pardon them and let the Church take responsibility to make them good citizens of India

I have been making anti minority statements regularly due to spewing of venom by some misguided NRIs, who after living in Gulf countires for long period have picked up some of their traits. But what surprised me was these poor christian guys destroying their own chruch property to incite communal tensions like other religious minorities do. I think these guys should be pardoned off but man behind their provocation should be arrested. I have nothing against christians, who like me are good at heart and educated, believe in peace and tranquility.

Christians overwhelmingly condemned this attempt to malign Hindu Community. Rightly every one wants strict action taken against these guys involved in such acts. Such demand is fair & just. But since no one trusts police & home ministry's version these days and there is no one to speak their side of stories unlike we heard in church or pub attack, it will be prudent to hear their side of the story from their words and then come to a fair conclusion.

Hey Hey Hey, what if these goons were not caught? It would be either blamed on SRS, BD or ultimately the disciplined Hindu Group RSS.. People (public) speak in all different ways in different occasions, These people who often comment in a cowardly ways(OTHER Countries) sitting in a luxurious home throw their comment blindly.. But same selfish people r not involved in doing something good rather than commenting pros n cons. And i would really appreciate the work of Daijiworld to present the information and being fair with all communities. People who face these situation and fight for it are the real heroes of Mangalore( any communities), not the people earning money in abroad and commenting selfishly to show how good they r in judging.

If a place of worship is attacked or desecrated by some members of the same religion or community the severity of the crime does not change in any way, in fact it is even more serious. Attacking places of worship for inciting communal hatred is a heinous crime and the perpetrators of these crimes should be strictly punished regardless of their religious or political affiliation. However, our local police appear to be very ive in apprehending and punishing the perpetrators of such above noted offences.

This is really sad. Let us hope the Police goes to the bottom of this and publish the findings. These youngsters must have thought destroying church property is not the same as destroying the place of worship! How wrong they are. All properties are sacred. If your hands are hitching try to destroy your own properties and then try to rebuild it - you will get a taste of how difficult it is. Trying to destroy the peace by labelling the activity on some other community is worse. These boys should be taught a tough lesson never to err again. Let the law takes its course.
