Mangalore: Protesting Catholics Try to Gherao Minister, Several Arrested

Mangalore, Sep 10: A group of Catholic leaders, who tried to mob the state minister for primary and secondary education minister Vishwanath Hegde Kageri, who is in the city to participate in a symposium to be held at Ramakrishna Ashram here, were arrested by the police men at around 9 am on Wednesday September 10.

The leaders were protesting against the minister's action in issuing instructions to the deputy directors of public instruction functioning at district-level, to issue notices to educational institutions being run by Catholic organizations that were closed down on August 29 this year, in protest against the atrocities being committed against the Christian brethren in Orissa state. The minister, who arrived in the city on Tuesday night, was staying at the Circuit House here.

About 100 protestors gathered at the Circuit House on Wednesday morning and sought to restrict the movement of the minister, as a mark of protest against his above action. Mangalore diocesan Catholic Sabha president Lancy D'Cunha, Congress leaders Ivan D'Souza and Stany Alvares, Mangalore Catholic Co-operative Bank director Raymond D’ Cunha and several others were among the protestors.

Well done protestors. I really appreciate you people who are fighting against the fundamentalists. We cannot survive in this world till then protests. Each and every catholic should come forward and fight for the rights.

These people have destroyed our beautiful and peaceful Mangalore due to their heinous act and divided all the religions with their jealous nature. However be careful before voting these uneducated education ministers, else our Karnataka will be declared as a illiterate state.

The majority of our Hindu brothers are highly educated and peace loving. They don’t indulge in this kind of activities. A small bunch of uneducated, unemployed goons join the subsidiary (Sangh parivar), of any political parties, to create trouble on getting instructions from their chief terrorist who may be an elected member.

We Christians should not have any fear of these goons. We know the power of prayer, let us pray for these goons, someday they will realize the truth and join their hands with our missionaries and help them in their sacred work.

Again,Bajarangadal, VHP and Parivaars start any such nuisense there then the Sultanate of those countries cut the tails.

There was a very disturbing incident that happened in Mumbai BEST Bus. A woman was traveling by bus no 344 from Dindoshi to Goregaon (E) bus depot. in the morning @ 7.15 as she was to attend her early morning shift. It was raining very heavily and she left quite a number of bus to board this particular one.

She purchased her ticket and after a while her eyes fell on the steel ticket box which the conductor carries. On this there was a poster which was pasted on the outside flap of the box and was very easily visible to the naked eye.On it the following shocking words in Hindi were found written along with a photo of a Hindu Self-styled Dharam Guru wearing white vestments:- 'CHRISTIAN PADRIYON KE BADTE PRACHHAR SE HINDU DHARAM KA MITNA SHURU HUWA HAI' On reading she was very disturbed, when the bus reached the depot and when everyone alighted, she decided to confront the conductor.

She asked him whether he understands the meaning conveyed by this poster, also how such racist/religious propaganda can be pasted on a government machinery used for public welfare, What proof he has to substantiate the allegation? The conductor who was in his 50's and of North Indian lineage, got disturbed and started evading her with aggressive verbal behavior and made no eye contact, also he blamed the driver for this poster, he refused to show his badge number and his name, the Driver on seeing her quietly walked away to the change room.

Since she was in a hurry to catch her train and did not want a crowd to assemble, she sternly warned the Driver and conductor with dire consequence, and even made a complaint to BEST authorities and asked them to remove the poster immediately and then moved ahead.

Our personal feeling is that VHP/Bajrand Dal has started retorting to a subtle, widespread, but a definite evil propaganda of hate against the Christians by misusing Govt.machinery , like BEST Buses to create a long term mass ethnic hate- situation , just like Orissa,Gujarat etc, to inflict communal riots. We as a peace loving community and patriotic Indian's ,not only protest against fanatic persons like Kageri, but also with those who are sowing the seed of hatred and venom against a minority community

Kumar, Rajesh and Sathya, Just think twice before you congratulate Kageri, aman with double standards. The Bajrang dal goons keep calling for Bundhs for the of the hat! How come the BJP government supports it, despite destroying the economy of the entire state. Why dont they send notices to the VHP and BD? arent these double standards? When Christian Institutions closed their schools, it was against a crime against humanity!! We cant take things lying down. Our children should learn to live nad let live. Don't be so naive.

Christians are not against Hindus. The so called VHP and BD are not hindus. they are monsters. They are not human beings. No God...Not even Sri Rama will accept this mindless violence. If you think He does He is not God! We are aware that it is a small minority of shameless goons who call themselves Hindus and destroy beautiful hindu traditions supported by a politaically motivated unscrupulous Government with dirty cheap politicians like Kageri that are destroying the peace of our beautiful Motherland... and you want to congratulate Kageri? Are you there....

It is unfortunate that niether the Governments nor those who accuse christians do enough to educate the poor of Orissa. When the Christians following the example of Jesus christ do some good to them instead of encouraging them they attribute motives. When some one is murdered instead of punishing the guilty spend time to find out to what religion hes belongs. When day after day strikes take place and schools are not allowed to function government does nothing. When Christians who have done so much for education, close the institutions to ask for justice according to our honourable minister they are doing someting wrong! This is our democacy!

My greatest fear is will india remain a secular country for a long time. Will it be ruled by fanatical parties headed by Swastics (indian nazis). Will india see history repeated as was in germany. Will necular armaments be safe in such hands. Any one protesting peacefully has every right. This is a democracy.

The minister should have had the guts to meet the delegation. Not send his khaki goons to clear his mess. Christian have no voice in indian politics and this is the only way we can highlight the injustice being done to them. We will turn the other cheek, we will pray for our persecutors yet we will stand for a just and fair politics.

Protest against injustice and oppression is our constitutional right and the father of the nation himself has shown us by example that non-cooperation and non-violence are effective tools of protests but one has to exercise caution not to use such protests for pushing political hidden agendas.

Additionally, let us not stoop down to Kageri’s level and give in to his political gimmicks. Physically restricting the movement of an elected official (no matter how unworthy he is) can not be considered a peaceful protest. Mahatma Gandhi puts it right” An eye for an eye will only leave the whole world blind.” Brothers and sisters, let us keep our eyes and minds open and not let our emotions rule us.

Alwayn, you are right. These religious fundamentalists do any non sense, any damage but no arrests are done! We christians protest peacefully and are arrested incompetent fundamentalists like Kageir even serve notices! He has the audacity to call Christian schools "his" without spending a pie, just by harrassing, these schools become "his". Shameless! Well, the moral is clear: if you protest don't protest peacefully! You will branded, harassed, and put behind bars! eh? As for picketing that kageri, well done, my dear brothers. Mr. Satya, whether govt aided or not, this was a protest for all catholic schools. When the Minister claims that they have given govt. aid they mean it mostly for the Hindu schools and most Catholic school may have it in writing but not in the account. If you actually visited a Catholic school which has so called "govt. aid", please note that it is mostly donations taken from Catholics or other well to do parents to help admit mostly Hindu students below the poverty line.

Making such a remark by the so called Minister about giving notices to the schools who participated in the closing for the solidarity of christian was not called for because if you go to see every month there is a Bandh called by the VHP, BJP and other Hindu organisations who have nothing better to do than waste honest taxpayers money.

It feels great to note that we Christians are awakened! It is high time that safranisation of Mangalore need to be stoped. However I feel that sporadic protests will not help our cause. Some planing is required even in the protests. We could have taken more people to circuit house to show our strength. Ministers statements have been condemned by the leaders in Bangalore as well. Our educational institutions must jointly reply to the notice.

We need not fear to receive the notice. Let it come and collectively let us reply for it. We Indians have every right to protest the injustice, at the same time we need to be legally right by making good of the day lost due to the protest.

It would be better if the minister spent quality time in his office and introduce some additional subject in higher primary schools on What is public behaviour, How to protect and save Public property, How and Why to protest etc. This education early in the minds of children will surely help in bringing up a generation of peace and understanding.
