Mangalore, Jun 17: The mortal remains of Udupi MLA Raghupati Bhat's wife Padmapriya arrived at Bajpe airport here on Tuesday June 17 morning from Bangalore through Jet Airways en-route to Udupi. The mortal remains were immediately sent to Udupi accompanied by MLA Raghupati Bhat, former Karkala MLA Sunil Kumar and others. Padmapriya's last rites are expected to be held in Udupi later in the day.

Earlier Padmpriya's mortal remains were brought to Bangalore in the small hours of Tuesday after conducting post mortem in New Delhi where she is said to have ender her life by hanging herself in an apartment in the Dwaraka locality.

'Fear of Cops on Trail made Padma End life'

Udpi, Jun 17: Karnataka Home Minister V S Acharya has said that the news that the State police were zeroing in on the missing Udupi MLAs wife, Padmapriya, might have forced her to end her life.

Dr Acharya, who on Sunday had asserted that he believed it was “temporary depression” that had driven her to commit suicide, said on Monday, “persons under depression take extreme step when tension mounts.”

He observed that when the door of the flat was broke open, the TV set was on with a Kannada channel still running and noted that she was aware of what was happening around her.

A medical doctor, Acharya, who saw the body of the 35-year-old woman on Sunday night, opined that Padmapriya might have committed suicide between 10 am and 11.30 am on Sunday.

Shama Apartment in Delhi

“It was a case of suicide. What motivated her to take this extreme step has to be investigated?” “Her face had turned black and her neck had swollen because of the impact of the rope which she used to hang herself to a ceiling hook,” Acharya told here on Monday.

“As a medical man I can say that death may have taken place 8-10 hours before I saw her body at 8.30 pm that night. Rigor mortis (the tightening of muscles happening about six hours after death) had set in already ”.
According to the minister, the BJP MLA came to know of his wife missing on June 12 and immediately, at 1 pm, informed him.

“I got in touch with the DGP, and the IGP went to the spot — where the car had been abandoned — at 3:30 pm. We were concerned about the safety of the woman. Then on June 13, we eliminated unlikely possibilities one by one.

On the morning of June 14, the police established contact with the person (Atul) who was suspected to have brought her here. By that evening, Bhat, accompanied by Sunil Kumar (former MLA) came to Delhi. They went to the flat at 2:30 pm on Sunday.

In Good times..Bhat Couple

There was no response. Along with the Delhi police, they came to the flat again at 6:30 pm only to find her dead.” The home minister observed that the State government would not spare anyone if found guilty. “We won’t spare anyone. Inquiry will be impartial. Our police have handled the case well. We are sorry we could not get her alive.”

Body of Padmapriya arrives in Bangalore

Deccan Herald

The body of Padmapriya, the wife of Udupi MLA Raghupathi Bhat, arrived in the City from New Delhi by a Jet Airways flight at 11.30 pm on Monday. Brothers of Padmapriya, Rajashekhar and Sudarshan, Padmapriya’s mother, Bhat and his friend Sunil accompanied the body.

The body was directly taken to M S Ramaiah Hospital in a freezer-fitted ambulance. It will be airlifted to Mangalore on Tuesday at 9 am.

One of Bhat’s close friends told Deccan Herald that Padmapriya was frustrated with domestic problems and was unhappy with the affairs of the MLA. He went on postponing her request to go in for a divorce. Atul was just a good friend of Padmapriya and there was no truth that the two had an affair. Media reports about the character of Padmapriya were not correct. Atul just wanted to help her. He only took her to Karwar and Goa from where she went to Delhi.

Udupi, Jun 16: The close family members of both Padmapriya and MLA Raghupaty Bhat, informed the media persons, at a press conference held at 4.30 p m at the residence of MLA Raghupaty Bhat, that they were disheartened by the visual media who were telecasting irrelevant news on the disappearance of Padmapriya.

He clarified that, she had left the house on Wednesday June 11 morning, informing the family that she would be away in her parents house for 3 days; and not on Jun 10 as the media reported.

Their families were traditional and dignified who would not bear the misleading  information published by the media on the straining relationship of Padmapriya with her husband that they claim was false.

To prove their cordial relationship they said that Padmapriya's husband Raghupaty Bhat used to take her along on official tours on his own expenses, in order to spend quality time together.  She has earned the trust of her husband, by handling all household responsibilities, managing his finance firm and plantation, they informed.

The family made several calls, in a bid to get in touch with, soon after she left home on Wednesday morning, but in vain.  They trusted that she would return from her parent's house in few days.  However, they were shocked to learn from the police that she had gone missing since her abandoned car was found in Kunjalgiri hills, at the jurisdiction of Shirva police station, on Friday June 13, they added..

Nonetheless, they are suspicious of Atul Rao, a close friend of MLA Raghupaty Bhat who has helped the former to get construction business in building houses in the isle under the administration of Adamar Math.

However, the family alleges that Atul, who could no longer bear the success of Raghupaty Bhat as an elected MLA and the prosperity of the entire family, could have masterminded to slay Padmapriya since she was the home maker and the all of the family.  The greed for wealth perhaps prompted Atul to go ahead with his evil plans, they alleged.

The mortal remains  of Padmapriya will arrive in Mangalore by air from New Delhi via Bangalore at 11.30 a m on Tuesday June 17, and later will be brought to the family's residence, here for last rites, they informed.

Balakrishna Acharya, cousin of MLA Raghupaty Bhat, Ramesh Barittaya, brother of Raghupaty, Prakash Rao, maternal uncle of Padmapriya were present at the press meet.

Atul Rao's Family Deny Role in Padmapriya Case

In the case relating to the abduction of Udupi MLA Raghupathi Bhat's wife Padmapriya until the recovery of her body at New Delhi, the role of one person is found to be very crucial. It was reported that he was
helping  Padmapriya to find a safe abode away from her husband, at the same time involving himself with the search efforts launched by her worried husband. Atul should be given full credit for making everyone including his family believe that he is innocent, all through the ordeal, considering the fact that Raghupathi Bhat is a shrewd politician.

Atul was Bhat's classmate, friend and confidant. He works as a store keeper in the engineering department of the zilla panchayat. He attended to the interior works of Bhat's house and office. As a close friend, he worked for the victory of Bhat during the recent elections. He was like a member of Bhat's family on whom both Bhat and his wife reposed total trust. Atul lives in Hudco colony at Doddanagudde, Udupi along with his wife, two children and mother. As an employee of the zilla panchayat, he was the one who disclosed to Bhat about a Rs 20 crore scam that happened at the zilla panchayat a few years ago.

Atul got a job on compassionate grounds, after his father, an engineer in the public works department and housing board, died while in service. He had completed pre university education then, and is said to have completed his of 'Dharmadarshi Builders' and is said to have got a lot of business because of Bhat's contacts. Atul is also an office bearer at Karambally Sri Venkatramana Temple of which Raghupathi Bhat is a trustee.

The guard of the apartment where the  body was found, has confirmed that Atul accompanied Padmapriya on June 10.

Despite tons of evidence  Atul's wife Meera and mother Usha strongly deny that he could harm any one. Meera is aghast at the way he is being painted as a villain by the media which she says, is unreasonable and unkind. His mother denies his involvement with any deceptive activities.

She agrees that her son had been out of Udupi from June 10 to 13, but was informed by him that he had been to Bangalore. As soon as he came back and came to know of  Padmapriya's disappearance, he lent his services to locate her, she says. After the police inspector Jayant Shetty called him to the police station in the morning, he came back at midnight, claiming that he had been to Kolar to help in investigations, the mother said. While the police said that Atul claimed Padmapriya was at Malur, the owner of Jain Farm near Malur denies that he had ever visited the farm.

The police have not yet revealed what story Atul has put forth, in respect of his following Padmapriya's car, deserting her car, deliberately showing proof of a scuffle inside the  her car, escorting her to Delhi etc., While some sources say that he has flatly denied having any illicit relationship with the deceased lady, it is also said that Atul disclosed that Padmapriya, who was fed up with the ways of her husband, had asked for Atul's help to live away from her husband. She reportedly  threatened to commit suicide if he did not extend a helping hand in her Endeavour, and promised to return whatever amount he spent towards her settlement elsewhere, in monthly  installments by working in a BPO or call centre.

My suggestion is that we cant blame any one in this case. It has to be handled by CBI.

B.G.MOHANDAS, DUBAITuesday, June 17, 2008

In the last few days I am following this sad incidence carefully and closely by reaading all the reports of print and electronic media. I fully agree with the views of Ramdas Shenoy as these issues are disturbing me too. Why the police having known that Padmapriya was in Delhi did not take the help of Delhi Police to rescue her if she was 'kidnapped' or to provide psychological support in case ‘she was disturbed or brain washed’?.

If this case has been used sensitively and discretely this disaster would have been averted. With newly found ‘power’ the State Govt used all the resources under their behest of Home Ministry and made this case such a major block buster and ‘ever hungry’ media followed…… Having ascertained that Padmapriya is alive and that she has gone to Delhi 'willingly' or by ‘brain wash’ as claimed now, the route of investigation should have been more humane and sensitive. What else to say?….a ‘house wife’s’ agony ended in her untimely and shocking death. And above all the two sweet children are witness to this frenzy. Who knows & understand their state of mind?.

Like Padmapriya, the wives of many sincere ‘public servants’ may be have to undergo lots of lonely life and at times being subdued by all powerful husbands who spend most of the time for public service. This may cause psychologically stress and their dreams suppressed. At this juncture a shoulder to ‘cry’ might at time be necessary to vent the pressure inside. This vulnerable status of a good women at times can be misused by few opportunist ‘Kamuka’ men under the guise of good Samritan. Take care & beware. Everyone is venting angry comments at the bereaved husband. But look at his state by being in his shoes…. Only time shall reveal and heal all the misgivings on this distressing story of a house wife who lost her life surely not for her misdeeds.

No one is at a greater loss than the 2 kids that lost their mother, whose death could have been avoided if not for the media (the ones that beef up stories without any proof) & irresponsibilty of Raghupathi Bhat & V. S. Acharya.

As a doctor & home minister, V. S. Archarya didn't make any effort to understand Padma Priya's mental state in this situation & rushed things for political reasons. They should have informed the Delhi Police when they came to know about her whereabouts so they could have provided her with protection. Family & political prestige should not have been the major issue in this 21st century.

I have heard of Mr. Bhat but never met him. But I have known Dr. Acharya for many years. I was really shocked to hear the news of the death of Padmapriya. She seems to be an honest wife, this death was not suitable for her. I feel she is murdered but I cannot point my finger atanyone. We have an excellent IGP Mr. A. M. Prasad, a friend of mine for nearly 20 years and if he is allowed he will bring the truth into life. Let CBI investigate and on whom ever doubt is found Investigate thoroughly with all possible means. I am sad about the the little beautiful kids. I shall surely pray for their good future. Agreed there was discord between husband and wife. Every household there are problems between couples, could be that minor one, moderate or in rare cases big issues. If there were any problems between two, it was a family matter and could have been resolved within the family.

It is said, Atul helped her to escape. Why Atul. Atul is not her blood relative. She has grown up brothers, parents alive, why she did not seek help from them. Well it is still remains a mystery and let us hope our CBI team investigate the case and justice is done.

Read this below true info.... Delhi/Udupi/Mangalore: Preliminary investigation into the mysterious death of 32-year-old Padmapriya, wife of Udupi MLA K. Raghupati Bhat, have ruled out foul play. She was found hanging in a flat at Dwarka in South-West Delhi on Sunday. “The post-mortem was conducted at Safdarjung Hospital on Monday and the body has been handed over to the family.

The inquest proceedings are on,” said a senior police officer. Circumstantial evidence suggest that it was a case of suicide, he added. Ms. Bhat was found hanging from a hook in the ceiling when a Karnataka police team accompanied by the local police broke open her Shama Apartments flat on Sunday.

She had reportedly taken the flat on rent about three days ago. It has been learnt that a family friend Athul Rao arranged for a second-hand Wagon-R car for Ms. Bhat and the advance was paid to a broker named Titoo on June 2, almost 10 days before she went “missing” from Udupi this past week. “Athul Rao approached me on June 2 to buy a car. A deal was struck for a second-hand Wagon-R car for Rs. 1,45,000 and he paid Rs. 10,000 in advance. He told me that the delivery would be taken on June 11. He came to me on June 12 accompanied by a woman to take the car. Mr. Rao told me that he was scheduled to take a flight to Bangalore around 1.30 p.m., and the car was delivered at Shama Apartments,” said Mr. Titoo, who owns Dwarka Motors in Sector 1 of Dwarka sub-city.

The Inspector-General of Police (Western Range), Ashit Mohan Prasad, said that as per indications given by Mr. Bhat’s family, the body would be taken directly to his residence at Udupi from the Bajpe airport, where it would arrive by a regular Jet Airways flight. “The family has not given any indication if the body would be taken to her parents’ house at Karnad in Mulky on the way to Udupi,” he added. Meanwhile, rumours and speculation about the reasons for Ms. Bhat’s death abound in Udupi, especially with regard to the motives of Athul Rao who appears to have helped Ms. Bhat leave town and set up house in Delhi.

The family of Mr. Raghupati Bhat has blamed him for her death. Balakrishna Acharya, a cousin of Mr. Raghupati Bhat, even accused Athul Rao, a childhood friend of Mr. Raghupati Bhat, of “hypnotising” Ms. Bhat, and “kidnapping” her with an eye to usurping her property. Athul Rao is under arrest, and his house at Doddanagudde is empty. His wife, mother and two sons left the house on Sunday. At a press conference, Mr. Acharya alleged that Mr. Rao was a schemer who was jealous of his friend’s rise and therefore, kidnapped his wife. All their relatives tried to contact Ms. Bhat several times on their mobile telephones after she left, he said. When Ms. Bhat left her husband’s house for her parents’ house, she had told Mr. Bhat that she would return after three days. When Mr. Bhat’s children tried calling their mother on Wednesday they got a “not reachable” response.

My question is that why Mr Bhat is not accusing or blaming Mr Atul Rao?? Doubt is that is Mr Bhat only told Mr Atul to do the whole drama??? Anything a common man can think but if they are God fearing people then they must tell the truth. Poor those two kida lost their Mother.

Anxiety of solitary confinement and bombardment of constant media development is responsible for her extreme move. Free media is welcome but looks like must work under certain regulation. Police should be give some breathing space that in this particular case could have saved a life. Mr.Raghupathi Bhat could have done more than just tap the door of the influentials. He should have tried to put a word across enough to spare a life.

My Humble request to electronic media, please stop beaming the same pictures again and again, atleast for the sake of two kids of Mr. Bhat. You guys have made Journalism a money spinning business, and don't hesitate to tarnish anybody's character/image without knowing the complete facts. Govt. should take action on some TV channels who have been just airing some nonsense story which are baseless.

I agree with ashok Pai. While absolving Atul of his involvement in this episode all are missing one point legally he is none to padmapriya while Raghupathi Bhat is her husband. Thus, his taking Padmapriya to Delhi and confining amounts to an offense. Even if he has helped her, it cannot be treated so legally if her husband lodges a complain on him.

People should not blame the Home Minister who is having a very good political career and good reputation in the society. 1000 people will say 1000 stories. This is not the time for gossip about a persons family matters. Karnataka State Police Dept is able and they have very good intelligent officers like IGP Prasad Sir, SP Devjyotiji, DCIB Inspector Shrinivas Raju, etc. People should not glorify this matter in negative way. People should not show finger on others unless and untill its confirmed.

Finally, VS Acharya admitted that it was his police force [definitely at his behest] who forced her to commit suicide: "Karnataka Home Minister V S Acharya has said that the news that the State police were zeroing in on the missing Udupi MLAs wife, Padmapriya, might have forced her to end her life".

Further, he with his police force are not revealing the whereabouts of Atul who helped her to escape to Delhi to lead a peaceful life without the dirty politics of Udupi. So, now it is a simple case of harrassment against this Minister who wanted to help his friend MLA at the cost of life of MLA's wife.

Why not High court take suo motto action to hand over the case to CBI to investigate the torture/threats unleashed on this peace-loving woman whowanted a peaceful life in Delhi which was planned by her at the end of election, accordingly booked flat at Delhi with Atul's help? What right this Minister had to interfere in her personal life using the police force under him to mentally harrass her?

Atul rao is a traitor indeed. As a childhood and family friend of Bhat, he had the resonsibility of reconcilliating the family even if padmapriya had some misunderstanding with her husband. Atul perhaps created a scene without the knowledge of Padmapriya back in Udupi by abandoning her car and breaking bangles etc. The entire episode that culminated in her death seems to be messed up plot of Atul.

Why blame on a third party like Atul? ( he may have helped the Lady). What made him to help her? My personal view is that she was intimidated by her husband and might have taken her life as a last resort when she thought that her hide out was exposed. What does Padma Priyas family( parents and brothers) has to say? Blaming everything on Atul ( a scape goat) does not do well to traditional family who give respect to a womans life.

Let them not blame that they were disheartened by the visual media who were allegedly telecasting irrelevant news on the disappearance of Padmapriya. It is this VS Acharya & his police under his instructions who were planting all falsehood stories in the media to fool the public at large & Padmapriya Atul in particular.

It is high time High Court or SC take suo motto action to order a CBI inquiry & a specific Lie Detector & Brain Mapping Test on VS Acharya & his police Team who totally bungled in this family dispute episode. It has become a fashion for politicians to blame the media when the truth is a bitter pill for them to swallow.

Shame on VS Acharya for trying to misguide the public to maintain his party's image. Public need to demand his immediate resignation/dismissal. He has brought shame to the sympathisers of BJP in educated class. He thought that he is the most brilliant man to suppress the truth, but proved himself to be most stupid among the lot alongwith Krishnaiah Chetty who issued Govt circular for conducting poojas in CM & Govt's name in 36,000 temples under mujurai dept!
