Udupi Sept 26:  Belapu village near Padubidri here is the beneficiary of the ‘Nirmal Gram Puraskar’ under the total sanitation campaign.  Following this achievement it was visited by a panel of delegates from the World organization - United Nations International Children’s Education Fund (UNICEF) and countries like Indonesia, Afghanistan, Zambia, Mozambique, Nigeria and Zimbabwe here on Tuesday September 25.

A gala event was organized by the gram panchayat under the leadership of its president Devi Prasad Shetty, in order to welcome the delegates and to acquaint them with the various developmental projects and welfare programmes taken up by the Belapu gram panchayat.

Brief information on Belapu village: Belapu is located at a distance of 23 kms away from Udupi. Its main occupation and crop, is agriculture and paddy respectively. Various developmental projects have been undertaken in this village under the Suvarna Gramodaya plan such as development of roads, drainage system, disposal of the waste, toddler centres, community halls, street lights etc and many more village developmental programmes are on the anvil to be implemented under the government’s different ‘yojanas’ (plans).
The Belapu village is today an ideal and model village due to the efforts of the gram panchayat and its members. They have generated awareness amongst the public regarding the importance of health and hygiene in every step of their lives. In fact two years back in 2005 on October 2 a Total Sanitary Campaign (TSC) was inaugurated in the Belapu village. Gram Panchayat’s major success has been in the eradication of open defecation, which has been achieved by them with the Self Help Groups (SHGs) in the Belapu village.
