Mangalore, Aug 20: Bishops from various parts in India have started to learn the a b c d of computers in the city. The computer teachers here are teaching MS word, power point and basic internet concepts to them. The workshop entitled "Shepherds of the Media Age” was inaugurated at St Aloysius college chapel here on Monday Aug 20 evening.

Cardinal Telesphore T Toppo, president, Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI), inaugurated workshop in the chapel here.

“We are in the beginning of 21st century. Therefore, to become the part of the cyber world, the knowledge of computers is necessary,” he opined.

Speaking about the Jesuits he said that, almost all the bishops of India are the products of Jesuits. At the same time, he appreciated the growth of St Aloysius institutions here in the last 130 years. He further said, “This transformation has become possible on this mountain, only because of God.”

Bishop Aloysius Paul D’Souza of Mangalore, who is also one of the participants of this workshop, welcomed the gathering. Fr Swebert D’Silva, principal of St Aloysius College, explained the significance of St Aloysius Chapel.

A total of 25 Bishops including 4 Arch-bishops from various parts in India have come here along with their laptops to learn the basics of computers. Most of them are above 60 and it is interesting to know how they learn the basic concepts of computers. The teachers of St Aloysius College are teaching about computers to these Shepherds. Now the college can also claim that, majority of the bishops in India are the students of St Aloysius College, Mangalore.

The workshop will be concluding on Thursday August 23 at Sandesha College of Fine Arts.

It's heartening to see the 'Shepherds' with computers instead of traditional mitre, crociere, starched robe girded with red slash (exception, the cardinal). May this be the beginning of a new era in the life of 'Indian Church'!!
