Mangalore, Jul 14: Some time ago, the government of Karnataka gave its approval for teaching of Konkani as a third optional language from 6th to 10th standard students either in Kannada or Devanagari script.

Accordingly, textbooks in Devanagari have been published and they were released at a function held in the auditorium of the Nalanda English medium School in the city.  

The function was attended by a large number of students and teachers. The events of the day included release of Konkani text books, felicitation of the people who worked towards publishing the text books,Indira Jodumatha and Suchitra Shenoy and demonstration of the methodology of teaching Konkani.

Dr K Mohan Pai welcomed the gathering. Local MLA Yogish Bhat, who is a Konkani speaker himself, was one of the chief guests. He welcomed the move of the promoters in taking a landmark step. Konkani Bhasha Mandal president Fr Eric Crasta also expressed happiness over the release of books. Raghava R Kamath,  president of Konkani Cultural Organization, and Paul Moras, president of All India Konkani Parishat, were the other guests.

The demonstration of methodology of teaching Konkani adopted to teach Konkani in classroom was conducted by Prof Madhava Pai. At the time of demonstration students were asked to repeat whatever the instructor told.

Indira Jodumatha proposed the vote of thanks.
