Exclusive pics and text by Chandana G Nayak

(California-based writer-journalist Chandana Nayak's earlier albums received rave response from our readers. With her natural flair for photography and travel, we should see more of these albums from time to time. - Editor)

Washington DC needs no introduction. The capital city of the United States of America offers architectural and artistic delights to the visitors. The city’s highly efficient and user-friendly Metrorail (subway) makes it a breeze to get around all the attractions. Most of the monuments and museums are within walking distance of each other and going by foot is also a great way to see the capital. A host of memorials to the founding fathers and other leaders are also scattered throughout Washington DC.

The US Capitol

The intricately designed interior of the rotunda of the US Capitol. Real gold filigree is used here.

A statue of King Kamehameha of Hawaii in the Capitol. Each state of the country has a statue of some renowned personality here in the National Statuary Hall Collection. This particular statue has an interesting anecdote associated with it. The statue is so heavy that it cannot be moved around easily and has remained in this particular corner for many years. The second is the statue of a native American chief

Arlington National Cemetery where war heroes and many former presidents have been laid to rest, and the Washington Monument

The changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Also known as the Tomb of the Unknowns, it is guard round the clock.

The ‘Three Servicemen Statue’ which is part of the Vietnam War Veterans Memorial in Washington DC.

The Lincoln Memorial overlooks the Reflecting Pool, Washington Monument and The Capitol.

Some of the artwork by school children on display along the walls of the tunnel that connects the House of Representatives to the Capitol.

A tour of the White House is definitely the highlight of the trip but unfortunately, security concerns prohibit photography of the interiors of the official residence of the US President!  However, the experience itself is something that will remain etched in memory. Here are some other ‘insider’ glimpses of Washington DC.
