Mangalore: Comedy of errors creates bomb scare at Infosys campus

Mangalore: Comedy of errors creates bomb scare at Infosys campus

Pics: Dayanand Kukkaje / Brijesh Garodi
Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (DV)

Mangalore, Sep 26: As per the latest information from the Infosys campus where a call about a bomb planted in the premises led to evacuation on Thursday September 26, it is now learnt that a wrong number had resulted in the confusion. Instead of connecting the caller to Bombay (Mumbai) the call wrongly went to Infosys!

Police said that the call was made by a maid servant employed at the house of Kotiprasad Alva in Jail Road, Kodialbail.

Police sources said that as Alva was not home, the maid herself dialed the number to Mumbai and speaking in Tulu asked the person on the other end, "Bombay..Bombay?"

The person at Infosys who picked the call, said to be from Kerala, did not understand the lady's words and wrongly interpreted it as 'Bomb hai' (there is a bomb), which resulted in the panic.

By 4 pm, the employees began shifting back into the building and the situation returned to normalcy.

Meanwhile, ACP Kavitha filed a case against Kotiprasad Alva's family in Barke police station for not cooperating with the investigation. The maid servant is expected to be questioned on Friday September 27, sources said.

A case has also been registered in Urva police station by Infosys security incharge Suresh Kunath.

Mangalore: Infosys gets bomb threat call, building evacuated

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (DV)

Mangalore, Sep 26: Infosys campus located at Kottara here on Thursday September 26 received a call claiming that a bomb was planted in the premises.

As soon the call was recieved, the building was evacuated and police officials were informed.

ACP Kavitha arrived at the spot and inspection is under way. A canine squad has been pressed into action.

A five-member bomb detection squad has also arrived at the spot.

There is no information yet as to whether it was a hoax call.

Speaking to daijiworld, inspector Manjunath said that the call was received from a house at Jail Road, Kodialbail, and the number was in the name of Kotiprasad Alva. He further said that it was a female voice, and that Alva himself was not present at home at the time of the call.

More details awaited.

Although the efforts being made by some authorities to wipe out memories of the colonial past by renaming cities and towns are laudable, it would be difficult for the contemporary generation to forget its immediate past. However, it would be appreciable if the new names chosen are easier to pronounce and not tongue-twisters. Long live India, sorry Hindustan, or is it Bharat?

I Like the name 'BOMBAY' Instead of Mumbai,Most of the south canera people pronouncing as Bombay
even famous cricketer sunil gavaskar said many times in his commentary as bombay, this is the peoples practice nothing wrong in calling Bombay.

Dear Mumbaikar and JN Bejai,
"Housemaid said nothing wrong". My dear the name of the city was wrong It is MUMBAI not BOMBAI anymore. You cannot call LONDON as BRANDON and NEWYORK as Nerolack - That is why words should be pronounced in a proper way. English should be learnt and spoken in a proper way, not the way you want. Don't think that the Housemaid is poor she could be very rich also.
I knew a person who washes Toilets but drives a Mercedes an speaks excellent English.
Now please tell whether he is a poor man and uneducated?
The ball is in your court.

Still international code for Mumbai 'BOM'
Check with any travel agent.
If they put 'MUM' it will go to Mumbasa - Dar-e-salam!!!.
Bombay mills still called Bombay mills like Bombay Dying, Bombay chowpaty still called former name only.
Chennai still people called as 'Madras' and Kolkotta as Calcutta.
It is not so easy to educate people even they are qualified.
You must have seen people drinking water by spoons from finger-bowl in star hotels after adding some sugar in it since there is a small lime piece.
There is no law to punish some pronounce wrong or call in a previous name which was exist in practice for centuries.
Chatrapathi station still people call as VT which is easy for them to call.
Bandra is actually in Marathi 'Vandre' have you heard any body calling it?

The Lady should be punished for saying Bombai instead of Mumbai as the name of the city has changed a decade ago. The city name was changed by Marathi speaking community to be "Amchi Mumbai" cos they knew lot of Tulu speaking people are in Mumbai and the previous name of Bombay definitely leads to Bomb hai Bai, Bomb hai.

Dear Mumbaikar,
How u know the lady is poor. Any one can work has a housemaid though they are poor or rich. The designation has got nothing to do with their personal wealth. Please analyse this. It is none of your business what kind of Dr. I am You dont question my authority.

Think your conscience.
How many 'DISAGREE's you accumulated so far.
Those who believe need no explanation.
Those who don't there is no explanation.

(House maid never said anything wrong she said 'Bombay' ENT treatment required who attended the phone call)
If one says apple and other end person assumes as Orange then decide who is wrong and who should punished.

Most of the People in interior Karnataka and other parts of South India think that Mangalore has become hub of terrorist activities and not fit for ordinary people to live. Especially after the arrest of Yasin Bhatkal this belief is more pronounced. When people always live in such a fear, the mistake in hearing is just natural.
