Udupi, Mar 2: Sri Vishweshatirtha Swamiji of Pejawar Math on Friday March 1 strongly opposed the setting up of ultra mega power plant at Niddodi and said that the people of the coastal region cannot afford to face further destruction of the natural resources.
Speaking to media persons, he said, "We are already facing enough problems and our natural resources are being destroyed because of the UPCL power plant. We cannot afford more destruction."
The Swamiji also called upon the locals and farmers to express a strong opposition to the proposed Niddodi power plant, and said, "Together we are strong, I cannot do anything alone, hence I call upon the people for support in opposing the project."
"Although Veerappa Moily is my follower and a friend, on this project I clearly oppose him, he is wrong. This is not BJP or Congress, nor is it about the dealings of any political party or government, neither is it about me and him. It is about the principle of right and wrong."
"Ignorance is acceptable but only to a certain extent, we cannot afford to be ignorant on such a serious issue that may have enormous consequences," he said.
He also referred to the renovation of Sri Anantheshwara temple of Krishna Math and said, "The ignorance of 'Ashta Mangala Prashne' regarding renovation of the Sri Anantheshwara temple of Krishna Math has become common. Ashta Maths, Ashta Matthadhisha, and Ashta Mangala are not linked to each other, hence the ritual followed is also different. Issues related to Krishna Math will be sorted out by themselves without doubt", he added.
When we think about development unfortunately what come to our minds are, power, wealth, technology etc etc... If we speak about comfort then, fan, ac etc etc. But how long can they last? Petroleum can last at max for 20-25 years, so the coal. After that no vehicle no technology... We seize fertile lands for the sake of so called development. When the resources are finished, we have no technology not even food. We deserted fertile lands... After coal mines exhausted, oil wells dried, the one who grows more food will be the riches. Those who have money instead of land, who live in the apartments are the poorest, who possess costliest cars don't know how to grow food will be the beggars. So what we need is the knowledge about which is really important and which is not. Food to eat, pure water to drink, unpolluted air to breath and peace of mind are the first what we should get. We should first learn to prioritize the things in which what we think important today money, tech etc etc fall in the last of the list. Yes coming to the topic, we need energy too. But how we should get it? First we should learn how to save the precious energy which is being wasted in the malls, pubs etc etc in the cities. Then increase the production in a clean way. We should not play with the lives of poor village farmers who are the real back bones of the entire mankind for the greed of the rich and ignorant. Once we learn this everything will be fine.

I cannot agree with Swamiji more on this issue. Many of the commentators, irrespective of their religious faith have expressed that Swamiji is right. I endorse the same feelings. For once, we have all thought of the environment and our district which provided so much for us and others, forgetting religion or anything attached to it. This is a positive sign, and to my mind this is the way forward, if we have to progress.
Dear Mr. Leslie Fernandes, So long I was under the impression people EAT TO LIVE and utilize the potential energy for the development of the world, however now I came to know from your comments that there is another category of people who only LIVE TO EAT and care a dam for the rest and grow the gray matter inside the skull which remains dormant and fresh.
good luck Niddodi people. Let the government realize that Niddodi is in Karnataka state, as it had remained neglected by the government for so long. Now, in the name of development, they are actually trying to sell the people of Niddodi. This project is not suitable for that area, gather together and protest this project.

most jobs going to outsiders who stay united... unlike locals. electricity etc benefits going to blore. y cant same b setup in hassan / mysore/ barren north karnatak? manipal jobs / lands / south kanara also taken over by outsiders or rich corporates. time for locals to hate each other....n eat dust?
Pejawar Swamiji and his thinking towards Niddodi Power plant its adverse environmental effects to the immediate areas and to the locals the destruction of greeneries is notable. A awareness among the locals its merit and demerits a bit knowledge about the power plant is necessary.Swamiji and his good thinking and its benefit towards the society and the locals in mind is really commendable.

MRPL has build the dam upstream of Thumbe dam for its consumption. Mr. Ganesh you can go to Sarapady and see the dam. The dam has already benifited the local farmers there by increasing the ground water table. If there was no dam there, these water would have gone to Thumbe, then to Arabian sea. All these days the Thumbe dam also did not have the capacity to hold large quantity water. Already there is rule in place, that during water scarcity domestic consumption should be met first & industrial consumption later, that is the reason MRPL was shut for almost 2 months last year. Dont oppose project for the sake of opposing.
I cant not undersatand, why those people who approve this project,not considering all these aspects, which has come in as comment from common people on this report. Are they doing this deliberately or having any vested interest on this project. These all projects should go to the area, which is not effecting nature and humans. Leaders who represent this region should take care....hope they work on this.....we do not have full time people to oppose these type of project...we people are all busy in our own personal things..and only vote when time comes...and our leaders enjoy full time with five star facility like some of them who are there as big leadears from so many years and favours only corporates of the region...what a joke and shame on them...........
Gas/Naphtha fired power plant is less polluting compared to coal fired thermal power plant. But the unit rate is high. These power plants can be located near Bangalore for local consumption instead of locating in far off places.

Just for the sake of development, we cannot forgo our fertile agricultural land and other natural resources like forests. We need to take care of environment. What is the guarantee that there won't be any industrial tragedies? Even if all these issues are taken care of another aspect also need to be taken care of. That is employment for locals. It has become habit of importing labourers from other parts of India. Mangalore is filled with Keralites and one day whole of Mangalore will be occupied by these Keralites.
Pejawar Swamiji you are 100% right. Thermal Power Plants are (Coal Burned) not suitable to Our Region. If we not opposed it now, we and our future Generations are the Victims of it.
@Lambert,Kelarai/Mangalore Perfect comment.You are 100% right.I had the same thing in my mind.Had this project proposed in any part of Kerala for good or bad the Keralites would never allow it to come up in the state come what may.Because of their unity and concern/social awareness roads are good in their state.Government knows very well that people of DK though 'buddhvantharu' are fools and any thing could be implemented here.Swamijis informal talk on vedeo is a pointer to this attitude.I have no hope,after seeing the whole episode of NTPC,now UPCL at Nandikoor,Udupi,that people of our place will succeed in stalling the mega thermal plant.Politiicians of our place across political parties are experts in manupulations and they will pretend as protestors and sip the taste of 'suit cases' ofwhen offered leaving the ordinary protestors in lurch.They are eargerly waiting for that chance.Therefore,People, we have no other choice but to surrender and let us not give a chance to politicians to dupe us.It is more painful than surrendering.
Top class comment! Forests are renewable energy! - We can grow more! It is wondering to watch forests amidst deserts done artificially by the govt of UAE! We must also have good concern over forests. You meant to say both urbanization and development of greenery should go hand in hand and I appreciate it.
We need to slowdown on the urbanisation process of our country.. and look for indigenous energy source... we cant have both urbanisation and forests/village life... urbanisation can be achieved in planned way with minimum destruction of natural resources...The state govt must have green belt surrouding its new projects so that damage is compensated and water table is not destroyed...Total opposition to the project in the name of conservation is not advisable...
Do not Mixeup politics in this issue. because we already seen how politics drama played in UPCL (NAGARJUNA) power plant in udupi dist. We lost Agricultural land thats it and no other major changes. I Request Both Central and State Govt please don't allow any industrial sector in Magalore and udupi Dist. these coastal land area very good for agricultural food products not for industry.
This project is meant for taking care of requirement of Bangalore. We already have one facility in Udupi but twin districts have no power. All eco-friendly projects are coming up in and around Bangalore. Projects which cause damages to the nature are given to coastal districts. Why this discrimination? Make twin districts independent we can take care of ourselves.
We need power for future. All means of Power Productions we oppose. Increase in Power Rates we oppose.. If no power then what will be the Growth Rate of India in coming years ??? Japan Generates 30% of electric power from nuclear reactors, such a small country dominates the world because of development. From steel to power, we oppose everything..In mangalore cultivation land is kept idle because no people to work there. The real Farmers sure wish a suitable power facility for mangalore
Mr. Matthew, if this project had gone to kasargod or some coastal areas of Kerala. there would have been large hue and cry. demonstrations , anti agitations etc. But coastal Karnataka there are more dumb citizens who toe government side instead of protecting their environment. Gone are those days when we used to enjoy tasty fish and vegetables which now breed on chemicals and hazardous effluents flowing to the sea from job giving/taking industries such as MRPL, BASF etc .
I think there should be no problem in constructing a Thermal Power Plant than a Coal fired Plant which is in modern times far more better considering natural resources, provided quality measures are taken up strictly which is the responsibility of the owners of the plant.You have to see to that the land used must be less fertile and barren land.
Let’s look at environmentalist common eco policies- Nuclear energy-its radiation..Very bad Thermal Project- natural resources will be destroyed -very bad Wind Power- Birds and bats will be chopped-very bad Tidal Power- massive amounts of creature’s habitat destroyed- Very bad Hydro Electric- dams would be flooded, it would be a disaster-very bad What is the ultimate solution? Can we give up electricity and discard all power related things?!!!!!!!!
I have one solution for the people who propose and oppose any kind of megaventure including UPCL already in place. Those who propose and oppose should exchange their properties on equitable basis. Let us see how many will opt for this and get along the megaventure.
If experts have chosen a certain place for this project, there must have been strong reasons behind it. I agree if one opposes to nuclear power plant. If everyone starts oppossing creation of even a thermal power plant, how can ever increasing power demand of concerned state in perticular and country in general be met.
To those who propose destruction of environment on the road to development, we are already on the way and arrived at the death of nature and environment. By proopagating development and luxury we have killed environment. To get those luxuries we degrade our mother nature. We are all in process of slow poisoning of ourselves to die a slow death. Is there a need to develop our own slow death. This is the reason for many hospitals have sprung up in creating this so called development.
We are strange people. We need Power but not Thermal Power Plants. We need Water but cannot save/ preserve water. We need clean streets but never stop littering.We need peace but never stop using loud speakers for our parties. We need good people to govern us but never stop voting on cast/religion/party basis. Dear Pejawar Swamiji, If there was no compromise, no sacrifice, and no adjustment for the betterment of the future generation by our forefathers, we would not have seen today's technological advancement and improved socio- economic development of the present generation. If our ancestors had gone with your ideology, we all would be still living in stone age in the jungle and saying HO! HO! with bow and spears.
It is good that only Pejawara Seer comes out in support of environment issues. But I would request him to be firm in his stand. And he needs to follow up on the promises given to him by political leaders. In both cases - UPCL and Gregory Patrao - he had his opinion but did not hold on till the end.That left many bewildered who expected that he stands by them. My request to all those who are supposed to be Representatives of God on earth, to see God in all his creations and come out against this blatant violation of environment and preserve this for the future generations.
For Once there is some good news for the people of coastal karnataka from the swami of pejavar. MRPL is using millions of liters of fresh water for its benefits, drying up the natural water table in the district. I do not understand how the Govt. approved the second line carrying water for the same and there is no objection from any one. In exchange to the crores of rupees of benefits, they promised renovation of Lady Goschen !! Why dont they set up desalination plant for this purpose !! Anyone listening?? (good agenda for the coming elections) Certainly the mega power project needs to be halted and opposed by all the people from the region, state and the country. Before you hit dislike on this, just think do you want to leave a barren, dusty environment for the future generations of mangalore. I miss the natural fruits, flowers, streams of fresh water and that fresh smell of air in the whole region.
