Case against Russian man held with cartridges in Goa, closed

Panaji, Feb 7 (PTI): A Goa court has closed the case against Russian national Anatoly Valenko, who was arrested last year at the Dabolim airport for possession of cartridges in his handbag. Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Vasco closed the case against Valenko recently after his antecedents back home were checked.

The investigations, which were presented before the court, concluded that Valenko had not carried the cartridges with the intention to execute any act of terrorism. He was arrested with live cartridges at Goa's Dabolim airport on January 13, 2012 following which he was charged for illegal possession of arms. Police also found that he was having valid gun licence in Russia.

The Russian Consulate in Mumbai which was closely monitoring the case has began the paper work to send Valenko back to his native country.

"The case of Valenko stands closed and I am happy that he will be able to lawfully return to his family within two weeks with the permission from Indian authorities," Vikram Varma, Goa representative of Russian Consulate in Mumbai, said.
