Delhi Gang-rape: President's Son Calls Protesting Women 'Dented and Painted'

Delhi Gang-rape: President's Son Calls Protesting Women 'Dented and Painted'

Kolkata, Dec 27 (PTI):
President Pranab Mukherjee's son Abhijit stoked a major controversy by describing women participating in Delhi protests against gangrape of a student as 'highly dented and painted', triggering angry backlash.

"Those who are coming in the name of students in the rallies, sundori, sundori mahila (beautiful women), highly dented and painted," Abhijit Mukherjee, an MP from Jangipur seat which the President had vacated before his election, told a vernacular news channel.

"Giving interviews in TV and showing off their children. I wonder whether they are students at all," he said, adding, "what's basically happening in Delhi is something like pink revolution, which has very little connection with ground realities."

As his "insensitive" remarks sparked outrage with even his sister Sharmistha expressing "utter shock and anguish" and apologising on his behalf, Abhijit "withdrew" his comments and said they were not meant to hurt "any particular section or any particular sentiment".

"I express my utter shock and anguish. I really apologise to every women, man and every sensitive person in this country... I am utterly shocked and only thing I can say is that I really apologise on his behalf... I am quite surprised with what my brother said," Sharmistha said.

Asked whether Abhijit should apologise for his words, she said, "I completely agree. He should immediately apologise.

"Not only as a President's son, but as any sensitive man, he should not have made this kind of statement. Forget about being a political leader, it shows a certain degree of insensitivity... My family is not like that," she said.

On whether her father would be embarrassed with Abhijit's remarks, Sharmistha said, "I am sure he will be. I can say that he also shares my view.... One thing is for sure that he (Pranab) does not agree with his (Abhijit) views. I am sure. He (Pranab) has made a statement and during our personal interactions, he expressed his anguish."

Soon after Abhijit said, "I apologise to all the people whose sentiments who got hurt because of these sentences and these sentences are withdrawn" but the women activists and political leaders were unimpressed.

CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat said political leaders cannot be allowed to get away with a mere apology after making such "outrageous and highly condemnable" remarks "demeaning women" and there should be a code of conduct for elected representatives.

Jaya Jaitley said the women will not be "cowed down" by such comments and it will only add strength to the movement. She said the comments have revealed the true mindset of the people.

"If it is what he has said, it is truly regrettable. I think that is so far away from reality. As a representative of the people, obviously this is an insensitive statement... That is why the suffering is increasing," former IPS officer and social activist Kiran Bedi said.

Terming the remarks as unfortunate, Smriti Irani, chief of BJP' women wing, said it was especially distressing as they had come from the President's son and that too at a "challenging time" when not only women but men have come out on streets demanding justice and safer environment for women.

"I think this is exactly the kind of mindset that the youths are fighting against," she said.
Her party said the comments reflect the Congress mindset of not addressing the problem and instead attacking peaceful protesters.

"To criticise the common people who are taking out candle light march peacefully is not fair. Congress leaders should avoid such comments," BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain told PTI.

"Mukherjee should not have given such a statement. These comments show the Congress mindset of not addressing the crisis and criticising the protesters," he added.

Abhijit had said, "Walking in candlelight processions, going to discotheques, we have also led student life, we have been students. I well know what the character of a student should be."

Prominent women rights activist and director of Centre for Social Research (CSR), Ranjana Kumari said, "I am really sorry about the way he is thinking and talking. So, so irresponsible. Coming from a family of such a senior and seasoned politician, respected person, President of India's son."

I think this speaks volumes about the mindset, the way they look at women, the way they describe women, Kumari said.

".... To talk like that is really demeaning the protest and extremely irresponsible. I totally condemn what he has said and he should apologise. This is not acceptable. He might be the son a President but what kind of comment is this. Really looks like a lewd remark," she said.

Social activist Subhasini Ali termed the remarks as "atrocious" and "insulting" to women.

"Just using these two words in the context of women is so insulting and to say that these were not students but 'dented and painted women', I cannot imagine something more insulting," she said.

Perhaps, President's son is so much observant of the type of protest and not the cause of it. His intention is very much clear from his comment. His comment clearly shows that he is trying to get political attention as he is not widely known like his father.

Those who are optimistic that assaults on Indian women would subside on the way down, need to introspect the root causes behind the reported incidents of atrocities against women. I don’t think the Delhi gang rape was caused by sexual compulsions of the perpetrators. As per the reports, the trouble started off with an argument on morality and caught fire when the group of men couldn’t digest the fierce and independent stand taken by the girl and her friend. Fingers shall be pointed to the ill-conceived notion of morality deep rooted in the society. Leaving the psychiatric patients who molest daughter, sister, neighbour, colleague, co-passenger and anybody who qualify as a sexual object (with adjectives removed), majority of the attacks on women root back to this morality syndrome.

Its interesting to note that the moral brigade has attributed the attacks on women to inappropriate dressing and social interactions of the women in qu...estion. If certain men tend to lose control based on the dresses women wear, then the only remedy for that is to make them used to it. Always it’s the exceptions that invite attention. Probably it might be a saree clad woman who would attract many a wandering pair of eyes in Singapore or Malaysia where girls on short skirts or trousers are the order not exception. The only difference between the Taliban who shoots down girls who wear western clothes and Sriram Sena who attacks girls in pubs is the weapons used for the attacks. Incidents of moral police attacking girls and boys who mingle together, citing the moral crime of them hailing from different religions (and at times casts), are on the rise.

Indian women are slowly coming out from centuries of oppression. Urbanisation and financial independence are major factors catering to this phenomena. This process of change would surely cause fire and fumes. And it can’t be completed in short span of time. And the process is just started. Certain religious establishments prohibit women from gaining financial independence in order to avoid this fire. Yes, if slaves are locked, chances of revolt is less!

Struggles and stormy sail lie ahead for Indian women till we root out the partisan and hypocritical morality theories from the society.

An extremely childish and immature response from someone who by virtue of his office, upbringing and family connections ought to know much better! The least our 'leaders' can do is to hang their heads down in shame. When, oh when, will our representatives acquire the maturity, foresight and sensitivity evident in those of the developed world? When will Indians, especially men, learn to respect the human person, human dignity and the freedom of choice assured to all citizens in a democracy?
Mr Abhijit Mukherji, we women have no patience with your juvenile remarks that wouldn't do credit to a school boy, let alone a Member of Parliament.
When men have failed us, we women still have one another. Thank God!!

Uncivilised person is elected representative of India, commenting cheaply on women in India. This kind of comments will support the rapists.
Father is a President of India, and Sr. Mukarji must take immediate action against his son. He has all the powers. as all congi MPs started supporting the moron Jr. Mukarji. Sonia Gandhi has no words - may be his comments applicable to her - painted & dented.

Well said , Abhijit. Every aware citizen will support you. The movement already turned political and hijacked by feminist voicing for anti men laws . Apart losing one innocent police officer , it also damaged public property. There are already laws for rape . Its the time false rape accusations ( FRA ) should also be made punishable.

same were the reasons given by BD , SRS etc when they assulted women.
But Mr Mukerji should be condemned, and unconditional apology should be ok.
BD, SRS does not know anything like apology.

Dear S.V.Ramanan, Bangalore .You appear to be affected by Rahul Ishwars comments on the TV show .It has been proved by all research that way the Lady dresses is not the cause of Rape .It is Purely the FRUGALITY and OVERPOWERING by the MEN that causes Rape .In most of the cases Culprit is generally one who is either a relative or some one well known to the Victim

Being the President's son, he should have been very careful with what he comments. This is certainly not in good taste. He was extremely insensitive to this issue, as most Indians normally are. Incidences like road rage, eve teasing, etc shows shortfall in our upbringing, behaviour, character, moral ethics. We cannot call ourselves cultured.

Sadly we live in a country where leaders have lost touch with reality. They dont know who the people are, what are the issues faced, why are people flustered and dont care about anything other than making money. We the people are noting but the votes for these folks. This just reminds us of the infamous quote "Let them eat cake" from Marie Antoinette. Sadly we have to take such leaders at face value.

Friday, December 28, 2012

dear all, if he is having family all ladies from his family does what he people speak from his perception and experience...may be his daughter wife goes to late night parties after any protest...

S.V.Ramanan, Bangalore
Friday, December 28, 2012

What followed in the panel discussion in TIMESNOW was totally unconnected to the issue and Mr Abhijit has tendered an unconditional apology.

The anchor talked of Mindset , quoting instances of Andhra Politicians and BJP‘s Syed Abbas Naqvi.

Yes they are to be condemned

But why lose sight of the original issue of Rape?

Shockingly one Ms. Brinda d the Delhi agitation is not as much for the rape incident but foe the basic(?) feminine Right to

“Drink ,Dance and be Celebrate!”

Another Girl d, in response to pointed question by Mr.Rahul that ‘while the rape is to be condemned , it is not advisable to go naked and ask a Man not to rape’,-We want our Rights to dress the way we want, go where we want when we want!’

It was also sad to see that no woman on the panel talked of Family Values, Honor or children!

Every woman was trying to defend the way they want to dress scantily and going about at midnight wherever they want.

If women do want to go about it that way, let them.

Freedom calls for responsibility including the responsibility of taking care of one self.

If these people can’t do it for themselves, how would they take care of their children?

The entire talk has conveyed one message, it is not the Life of the raped, the punishment for the Rapist, the family, well-being of

individuals that is important, but of doing what one wants asking Men to behave properly.

An information-The number of people who have singed -Stop Rape Now–Men outnumber Women.

For my post asking people to sign the Petition,’ likes ’are mostly from Men.!

He has merely echoed the sentiments of almost all the politicians because none of them have any concern for the common people, more so about the safety of women and children because they are alwys surrounded by security and know that such tragedy will never befall on their family. They dont know anything about the ground reality. They need the common people only till the elections. After that they behave like the lords. Only god can save our country.

Congress always insulted women and fellow Indians. They like only Portuguese, Italians and Pakistanis..

His statement shows what is their perception about
WOMEN. Even Rahul Gandhi has same mindset about women. But he can't express it because someone has to write this in English and give it to him.

Thursday, December 27, 2012

Abhijit Mukherjee, the son of the indian President, is out of his mind
to make irresponsible and stupid statements like these, against the peaceful protesters,
protesting the savage, brutal, dastardly and heinous attack on an innocent 23 year old. It is him who is totally out of touch with the ground reality in New Delhi and not the protesters.

He should be greatly ashamed of himself and should immediately resign his MP position for making such insensitive and stupid remarks.
