Mangalore: Justice Markandey Katju Delivers Endowment Lecture at SDM College

Mangalore, Dec 4: 'Constitutional Jurisprudence', a silver jubilee endowment lecture was held at SDM Law College auditorium here on Tuesday December 4.
The lecture was delivered by Justice Markandey Katju, retired judge of Supreme Court and chairman of the Press Council of India.
Delivering the lecture, Katju said that India's Constituition had been based on western concepts when it was formulated and a secular, backward country like India could not handle it. "Although we have progressed since Independence, a lot more needs to be done to develop the country in a manner that is accepted by all," he said
India is a vast country with different religions languages and culture, yet all through it has managed to maintain a secular yet diversified system. The current system needs to be modernized a bit so that the country can be presented to the world as a powerful entity, said Justice Katju.
He also mentioned that court proceedings must be made accessible to all so as to understand the judicial system.
Speaking on the topic of the Jan Lokpal bill, he said that although it offers a lumpsome of jobs to the youth this would only lead to unintentional corruption.
On the occasion, Dr B Yashovarma, secretary of SDM educational society, Ujire released the journal ‘SDM Laws and News’. He also honoured Justice Markandey Katju.
DR BK Ravindra, principal of SDM college welcomed the gathering, Meghana Ballal compered while Dr Tharanath, co-coordinator delivered the vote of thanks.
