Udupi, Nov 28: "Aptharanga Boomi”- street drama and “Kala jatha” was organized by the Makkala Hakku Masothsava Samithi 2012, Taluk Shikshana Sampanmoola Udupi, Lions and Lionesses held at Lions Bhavan on Tuesday, November 27.

The play was showcased to create awareness for the ‘Child Right Act 2000’.

Renni D’souza (director Padi Mangalore) and Rita Martha (Deputy Director, Women and Child Welfare Department ) inaugurated the function.

Renni D’souza said that in the year 1992, the Indian government accepted this act and in 2000 it was implemented while in 2006 it was amended.

“Though the district lags behind the act being imposed, the reason for the same is due to lack of unity. There are many departments or units in the districts like JJP, SJPU, social welfare department, police and civil society but they don’t work together”, she said.

She said that the best example for this issue is the increasing number of children in the road as beggars, child labour and migrating children without basic needs. This programme is a small effort to bring all together for a well cost.

Rita Martha said that the special juvenile police unit and juvenile justice police unit in the district are working as per the rules, the police are not allowed to wear uniforms when amogn the children, no hand cuffs for the thieves, and the accused are always accompanied during interrogation.

“We are working as per the integrated child protection scheme”, she added.

Shiva Prasad Shetty (president, Taluk level officer), Joseph Mathew (president Lions club ), Chandrika Ravish (president Lioness ), Malikka B Poojari (ZP member Udupi), Janardhana Bhandarkar, Sulochana Kodavoor and others were present.
