Russian Border Guards Rescue Dutch Kayaker

Moscow, Sep 7 (IANS/RIA Novosti): Border guards in Russia's far eastern region of Chukotka have rescued a Dutch adventurer who went missing while trying to cross the Bering Strait by kayak, a spokesman said.

Last week, Dutch national Yuri Klaver passed through the customs and border control in Russia's Provideniya sea port and set out in his kayak for Alaska.

US border guards, informed of Klaver's departure in advance, told Russian border guards that the adventurer had not reached his destination point.

"A search for him was organised, and three days later he was found on a deserted stretch of the Bering Strait coast, in a state of physical and moral exhaustion," a spokesman for the regional border guards department said.

The search operation was conducted by a border guards plane, a ship and a number of motor boats.

Klaver said he was caught in a storm shortly after leaving the port and his kayak was swept towards the open sea by a strong current, but he somehow managed to reach land.

His navigation and communication equipment was out of order and he ran out of food two days before being rescued.
