Committee to Probe Goa Rape Suicide

Panaji, Sep 1 (IBNS): The Goa education department has formed a high-level committee to probe into the suicide of a rape victim who burnt herself fearing her rapist will harm her.

The committee headed by BJP legislator Vishnu Surya Wagh will also investigate the role of the school in which the teacher Kanhaiya Naik, accused of raping his student used to teach.

The 17-year-old student succumbed to 90 percent burn injuries after she immolated herself at her home on July 23, 2012 almost a fortnight after Naik (45) was granted bail.

Naik was earlier arrested in January 2012 for allegedly raping her at his apartment on December 29, 2011.

The government has dismissed him from the service even as he is currently on bail for abatement to suicide charge.

“Adequacy of action taken by the management of the school against the accused teacher…Was the girl counseled by the school after the rape incident? Any development in this issue after he was released on bail as it led to the suicide of the girl,” are some of the areas which the committee will look into.

The inquiry report to the government will also have suggestions on the case.
