Mangalore, Aug 21: A man, aged around 65, died after falling into a drain at Pumpwell here late on Tuesday August 21 evening.

The man, whose identity is yet to be ascertained, was sitting on a parapet above a drain near Pumpwell bus stop. All of a sudden, he lost balance and fell.

Another man who was standing nearby tried to catch him, but in vain.

The elderly man fell into the drain which contained water. He sustained injuries on the head and died on the spot.

The man might have been unwell and might have fainted, or he might have been drowsy, said an eyewitness. "Nevertheless, the incident has brought to light the danger posed by the uncovered drain," he added.

The body was stuck inside and was retrieved with the help of the fire personnel.

The incident aroused the curiosity of passersby and a large number of people gathered at the spot. They were chased by the police.

The body was later shifted to Wenlock.

Except corrupt-Politician, Filmwallas, Cricketers, Industrialists & Hardcore-Criminals, rest of the 99% of the Indians are Faceless & without Identity. So, one such unidentified person goes down the drain, thats all.

A total negligence by the MCC itself.A busy road and a open Drain nearby, shows the quality and the working style of MCC.A oepn Drain always be cautioned and protected from any unwanted incidents. Request Daijiiworld to start a campain similar to Attack on Morning mist Girls and Aiport Tax campain. Mangalore needs good side walks , closed drainage systems etc. We are still living in the Pre independance day time.

Daijiiworld only you can do some thing to chage this condition, people need to come forward to talk to MCC and other officers who need to protect citizons

This looks like a 'jor ka jatka dheere se lage' case. I mean this drain is there since time immemorial. Opting to fall in it
at an 'odd' hour should not be credited to the Mayor nor anybody else. One should have 'balance'
and 'presence' of mind always when in public domain. looks like a 'suspect' case from all accounts.Pray what can Vijayanaath Shetty, Maroli or bhandarkar do in this case?

I DONT UNDERSTAND THE WAY OF HANDLING HUMAN BODY !!! THIS IS SIMILAR TO RSS/SENE/HIV ATTACKING ON POOR GIRL/WOMEN/BOYS. THERE IS A WAY TO HANDLE THE HUMAN BODY INSTEAD OF TIDE IN THE ROPE !!! SOME EXTENT I AGREE WITH THAT THIS IS A PART OF OUR CULTURE BECAUSE IN A FORIEGN CULTURE THEY AT LEAST GIVE THE RESPECT TO A DEAD HUMAN BODY !!! JAI HOO

Hani, Mangalore. KSA

No respect for human being. See the civil defense people are using ropes to bring the body up.
Even they dont have a flat wood to lay the body. It is not at all acceptable.
MCC is good for nothing. They are interested in their 10% commission only.

It is high time that MCC takes efficient measures to safe guard safety of Mangalore civilians. Shocking to see, new roads done well, but no drainage, no pavements for pedestrains etc. Also once roads are done, MCC takes pleasure in digging these roads again for some vague reason.
Drains in the city, mostly are kept/left open which is a threat to civilians..!!
MCC officials should wake up and take care of these things to ensure safety to Mangaloreans.

Tragic death of a poor soul. RIP. MCC must cover the open drains and improve the health and safety. Fire personnel lack the necessary safety gear too. NGOs can donate them.

This sort of malady is not attributed only to Mangalore. It is common to all the cities in India. Municipal authorities seem to be complacent all over, time they woke up from their slumber and shake off their tainted lethargy.

Mangalore City Corporation is indifferent specilly to the needs of pedestrians, many drains are open non existent foot paths, no proper drains for rain water in many places as a result roads get flooded and even drainage effuluents gets over flowed in so many streets. Nobody cares.

ANOTHER LIFE LOST DUE TO CARELESS CIVIC OFFICIALS. AS LONG AS THERE IS NO ACCOUNTABILITY FOR THE PROFESSIONAL NEGLIGENCE OF THE CIVIL SERVANTS THESE TYPES OF DEATHS WILL BE PUBLIC TAMASHA AND NOTHING MORE. JABBE POYE WILL BE THE COMON EXPRESSION. IF WE TRULY THINK RATIONALLY SAFETY IN PUBLIC PLACES IS NOT DIFFICULT TO ACHIEVE. THERE MUST BE DEDICATED THOUGHTS AND ACTION WHICH ARE NOT TASKING AT ALL.

I pity our mangalore fire fighters,, they dont even have a hand gloves to protect themselves when they go into the drain?. Regarding open drain, there is nothing to talk about,, coz its a universal truth that our India cannot be perfect with closed drains etc etc...Even the pumpwell busstop stinks with the smell of that open drain, I wonder how that man could sit near to it?
