Mangalore, Aug 21: 'Konkani Maniyata Divas' celebrations, marking 20 years of inclusion of Konkani in the Indian Constitution, concluded with a befitting ceremony at Kalaangann, Shaktinager here on Monday August 20.

To mark Konkani Manyata Divas, Mandd Sobhan along with Konkani Prachar Sanchalan, Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy and Jagotik Konkani Songhatton had organized various competitions like singing, dance and skit. As many as 477 participants were part of the competitions.

J R Lobo, former commissioner and Congress member was the chief guest for the valedictory programme.

Kasargod Chinna, president of Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy, Eric Ozario, secretary of Jagotik Konkani Songhatton, Roy Castelino, president of Konkani Prachar Sanchalan, Stany Alvares, president of Mandd Sobhann, Devdas Pai, registrar of Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy, Sr Zuana Coelho, Sonia Monteiro and Irin Sequeira shared the dais.

"It is a happy moment for us as we celebrate the 20 years of Konkani's inclusion in the Indian Constitution," said J R Lobo.

He asked people to give importance to Konkani language and culture so that its value is preserved and passed on to the next generation.

Mandd Sobhann gurkar Eric Ozario said that Konkani language is among the 22 recognized languages in the Constitution, which is a matter of pride.

"Even after so much respect has been shown to our language, some people feel ashamed to talk Konkani at home. If this trend continues, Konkani will soon be extinct," he warned.

Kasargod Chinna congratulated the participants for taking part in such large numbers. He urged the young generation to hold the Konkani language high by participating in various Konkani activities.

"We have planned to celebrate Konkani Teacher’s Day on September 6th every year. Let us all work together in promoting our language," he added.

On the occasion Erio Ozario announced that a workshop on singing will be conducted by him for high school and college students at Kalaangann on September 16. He said the workshop will be free of cost with 10 Konkani songs being taught. Only the first 60 entries will be considered, he added.

Prizes were distributed to the winners of the competitions on the occasion.

Students represented their schools and colleges for dance and singing competitions whereas the quiz competition was open for all (general category). Winners were awarded mementos, certificates and cash prizes.

Roy Castelino welcomed, Rony compered and Vernon D’Souza proposed the vote of thanks.
