Panaji: Rape Victim Who Attempted Suicide Succumbs

Panaji, Jul 28 (IBNS): The 17-year-old rape victim, who set herself ablaze four days back, died at the Goa Medical College and Hospital on Friday.

Medical superintendent Dr Rajan Kunkolienkar has confirmed the death.

“She succumbed to 90 percent burn injuries at about 4:45pm. It’s a medico legal case now. A post-mortem will be conducted tomorrow,” he said.

The Panaji police will move for the alleged rapist Kanhaiya Naik’s bail cancellation suspecting he provoked the victim to commit suicide.

The student, in her dying declaration to the executive magistrate had said she took drastic step as she feared for her life after the High Court granted bail to the teacher on July 10.

The girl, studying in a city-based school was allegedly raped by her teacher at his apartment on December 29, 2011. He was arrested by the Panaji police in January this year after remaining absconding for a couple of days.

The matter was raised in the ongoing state legislative assembly after the attempted suicide bid by the girl.
