Daijiworld Media Network – Sullia
Sullia, Jul 23: Although there have been repeated warnings and reports on SMS and email scams in the media, people continue to fall prey to fraudsters.
Shwetha, who is pursuing her higher studies, recently received an SMS congratulating her on winning Rs 1.6 crore. The message was sent regarding a win by a Coco-Cola company contest which also asked her to pay a huge sum of Rs 2.18 lac as 'customs duty'.
She paid the amount without suspecting a thing and learnt that she was duped only when she received a second message asking her to pay another Rs 1 lac. She enquired with her friends and learnt of the fraud.
A complaint was lodged at the Sullia police station in this regard.

Just the other day I received a call on my mobile by a man saying that I have won Rs 40 Lakhs in a lottery basis my mobile SIM card.
He wanted my Bank account no, credit card details etc. Also he wanted me to deposit Rs 4 Lakhs to complete some formalities.
I asked him to send me 10 lakhs first to my address.
Of course, I knew this was a call from a fraudster.
When I asked why someone is disposing huge amounts of money to people, he started giving vague answers.
At this time I told him to collect all the 40 Lakhs and shove it where the sun does not shine.
Time and again we get reports in the media about people getting cheated. Let us all be more careful
