Puttur: Headscarf Issue - Peace Prevails as Students Return to Classes

Puttur: Headscarf Issue - Peace Prevails as Students Return to Classes

Daijiworld Media network - Puttur (VM)

Puttur, Jul 19: The deadlock between the Muslim students of Ramakunjeshwar College near Uppinangady and the College management over the headscarf issue showed signs of breaking on Wednesday July 18.

The students have been up in arms with the management demanding permission to wear headscarves in class. The College had refused, with principal Vasanth Rao insisting that the rules were equal for all.

Sources said that three students involved in the protest have already attended classes. On Wednesday, as many as 25 students along with their parents requested the principal to allow them to attend classes and also pledged for attendance for the classes they missed during the protest.

In response, the principal allowed them to attend classes but turned down their plea for attendance.

However, no decision has been taken on the issue. Pejawar Seer, chairman of the institution has assured harmonious solution to the problem after Chaturmasya vow.

The protest had been going on for over a week.

Dear Altaaf, salaam,

Management has already made the rules and all the students to abide by rules. Why the issue of scarf now?? . Do not blame the management as fascists. Everywhere in the world, Muslim community is getting polarized with their practices. If Hindus are fanatic &Fascist like Ur religion, your numbers should have come down.(Pls see the statistics our neighbouring countries Pakistan&Bangladesh.) They show min. respect to cohesive living with other communities or within themselves. Please follow the statistics on violence in Muslim vs other countries. –
Muslims killing Muslims yesterday: Iraq 107, Syria 20, Pakistan 15, Sudan 4, Afghanistan 8 .
This is only yesterday(23rd June2012). My advise is just follow on daily basis u will find even more.! & wondering how the religion of Peace works.
For gods sake don’t be fanatic, be open to reforms/adopt good things in practices in the secular India.

Mr steve forcing some one and giving freedom is entirely different concept so please don't mix it up. I am in communist ruled nation and well developed than india and till now I dint hear such issues in China. Female students attend college with headscarf and even males with beared.. such nonsence conflicts are only seen in india especially in mlore. The main concept of any college must be to provide education not to implement dress code, that too when a student is dressed not in half naked. This agent of saffron group is indirectly prohibiting muslims and sikh students inside its premises by his Hitler policy.

Kodialkar, Mangalore

Please dont comment without understanding the subject. My comments said no one is capable of making a picture/statue of God.

I did not say anything about information about God.

Yes God through Vedas, scriptures, prophets has given information about the almighty but not the picture/statue of the almghty.

As per the information in the scriptures different faiths were propagated to different people based on time and place. Out of the revealed scriptures Vedas give the foremost information about God. Bhagavad Gita being the most revealed scripture gives information about God clearly. Just because your information of god is limited, it does not give you the right to speak about the photos or deities of god and his devotees. Go to other countries apart from India even though they do not follow their faith properly they claim to lead the countries by law of their religion like shariah in Saudi or Iran etc. I am pretty sure that you are not sure about your faith itself neither you have any knowledge of your revealed scriptures. However I suggest first you stop claiming about your being from minority community to get sympathy of people and start following what Jesus Christ has told. May you be peaceful... Amen...

GOOD MOVE. LET THEM FOLLOW AS PER COLLEGE RULE.

NOT REQUIRED ANY SPECIAL CONSIDERATION.

IF THEY PROTEST AGAIN, THEN DISMISS IMMEDIATELY.

THEY MUST KEEP IN MIND THAT THEY ARE COMING FOR STUDY ONLY.

No one knows seen God, so there cannot be photos of God, be it in schools/prayer halls or homes.

It is the height of ignorance the terms photos/statue of God

Steve, Sharjah. Agree with your comments.

Students protest is very legal to get religious right, in which country giving us religious freedom and treating all are equal, excuse still not clear were Hindu,Sikh and Christian nuns students can attend school classes with wearing raksha bandan, turban & scarf etc for religious reasons why not Muslims students can wear scarf ?

Optionally Muslim students better complete their academic year for the shake of education and community leaders so responsible for this and should come forward to solve this issue not to be repeated in future days it may spoil students’ career.

What's wrong with headscarf? Students should be allowed to dress if they are following religious traditions. I like the comment by one reader who said what you do with sikh boys, would they ask to remove turban? Not good.

We are livinging in India with multicultural society. It is the recent development we are following european culture.
People forgot the time, when our school collegues were bare footed attending classes. Now shoe and uniforms become the rules and by law of the college.
We should respect each other religion which is a way of life and not to interfere with the humen rights. After all what is going to be achieved through uniform?... I think equality...treat each other equal. But when it comes to wearing a head scarf by muslim... it becomes irritating some body...looks strange.

Which stupid rule says attendance shall given to students involved in the strike..!!!??? Do not give attendance and do allow to sit for the exams if the attendance is less than the stipulated percentage..This is the only way to control the students who involve in illegal agitation.

Its High Time Drama by students. The students those who are not interested in College rules, should join the college where there is more freedom.
Joining the college and making the drama is not an excuse.
The college should print the rules in the prospects and advise the students same during admission.

Prejudice against Minorities is surfaced in different form in our society. It is very hard to believe that a modest dress would harm the discipline of the education institution is totally wrong.

Congrats for the Principal for having acted very firm on the issue and not yielded to pressure tactics & threats of vested interest. Education without discipline is total waste. Religion is last resort of scoundrels.

At the time of admission, the forms had clearly mentioned that student should strictly adhere to uniform, & the students had signed to the conditions laid. But due to intereference of unseen hands, the students forgot their bonding to agreement & went on with strike.

Many educational institutions lay similar rules, but student at the time of admission only concetrate on admission, & once getting the seat, shifts his attention from uniform to religious code. Strict rules should be made that student wears only uniform in educational institutions & not religious identity as burkha by muslim girls or blue/black mundus by shabarimala disciples. Education in school/college & religious practise strictly outside.

Thank god,the issue is likely to be cooled down as classesattended by the agitating students.Appriciat Principal's stand not to give attendence for agitation period.Since collecge has its own bye laws do not deviate from it.Do not budge for students demands come what may.If request is acceded it may give room for new problems.Pl maintain status quo on dress code. All irritationsl/irrational problems should dealt with a firm hand to maintain deciplene in the collecge campus.Congrats for the Principal for having acted very firm on the issue.
