Kundapur, Jul 14: The golden jubilee celebrations of Bhandarkars' College of Arts and Science were held at the R N Shetty Hall here on Saturday July 14 at 11.30 am.

The event was inaugurated by lighting the lamp by Dr Ramdas M Pai, chancellor, Manipal University. In his speech Dr Pai appreciated the principal and the staff of Bhandarkars' College and called it one of the premier institutions in the state.

On the occasion, a special logo designed to mark the jubilee year was unveiled by Dr H S Ballal, pro-chancellor, Manipal University who was introduced by Meenakshi.

Dr Ballal englightened the audience on the importance of imparting education to the girl child in particular, as in turn she would be able to educate a family, while educating a boy would mean passing on the knowledge to only one person. He also congratulated the instituition on achieving the 50-year milestone.

Dr H Shantaram, administrative office, academy of general education, Manipal, presided over the function. Delivering the presidential address, he wished all the students the very best in life and said that they were fortunate to attend such a jubilous celebration.

Trustees Padmakar Nayak, Shantaram Prabhu and Rajendra Tholar attended the function.

Chandrashekar Doma, principal of Bhandarkars' College of Arts and Science and G M Gonda, principal Bhandakars PU College, Kundapur among others were present.

While professor Doma Chandrashekar welcomed the gathering, K Shantaram delivered the vote of thanks.

Prakash and Sadashiv, thanks for reminding of our great teachers. I went back in days. Mr. Navda, I always remember you for saving me the first page in our magazine "Darshana"

Congratulations!
Most of our institutions do not recognise their own alumni. Every college and school should have a database on their alumni - like where they are and what position they are etc. We could help the college grow further. I don't think anyone from the management (such as MAHE)reads these responses. At the moment, we don't have any link with the college as our teachers have retired now and we don't know anyone in the college. This is very sad - if college is interested to grow further they should contact their alumni.

The College should go for autonomous status from Mangalore University and commence a full-fledged Post Graduate Centre in Science and Arts streams in addition to the Commerce, which has been just started, to the benefit of rural and girl students of the region. The management should be very active in this direction. Though, five years back the College has been granted Autonomy, it has been rejected, hope it will be reconsidered again.

I agree with you Prakash........
Late Dr K N Shenoy (Botany), Prof. Navada (Kannada) The Aithals (Chemistry) Upadhya (Zoolology) just a few of them I remember as I was in PCMB, hence I am a bit biased towards science. Prof. Acharya was a phenomenal teacher too. As you mentioned Tholpady, Shumbhu Shanker, Thunga were excellent too.
On administration side, Vittal in office had given his soul to this great institution.

Mr. Sadashiv, Kundapur
I agree with you. Mr. Narayana Acharya was the real hero in 1970s. The strike concerning donation unexpectedly went for a long time which had affected my studies.

Anyhow, my hearty congragulations to Bhandarkars' College on its golden jubilee feat. During my college days, we had very dedicated Lecturers like Mr. Navda, Mr. Raghavendra Bhat, Mr. Shambhu Shankar, Mr. Thunga etc... I can't now remember the other names. I feel proud being Bhandarkars' ex-student.

Congratulations!
It was sad not to see Prof. Narayana Acharya being felicitated in the function. Most of the developments in the college happened under his guidance. Under his leadership as vice principal the college survived its rough times (strikes of 70-80s) when the principal was never at the scene!(I am sure citizens of Kundapur know who it is!)
