Maharashtra Bans Gutkha, Paan Masala

Mumbai, Jul 12: The Maharashtra government on Wednsday announced a ban on the production, sale, distribution and storage of gutkha and paan masala in the state.

The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, sources said.

The ban on gutkha and paan masala (both flavoured tobacco-based products) will result in revenue loss of Rs100 crore per year for the state exchequer, but the decision has been taken in larger public interest, they said.

Maharashtra has joined a handful of states, among them Kerala and Madhya Pradesh, to ban gutkha, blamed for oral diseases such as cancer.

Maharashtra had imposed a ban on the two products in 2002 and 2008 also but the decision could not pass legal scrutiny.

The state Govt. has announced ban on the production, sale, distribution and storage of gutkha and paan masala in the state but what about punishment terms /penalty.

This will definitely lead to black marketing and the local politicians are much more benefited, the reason out of 10 in maharashtrians 9 are using this.

Walla one of good comments from Mr.Langoolacharya., Belman/USA. By eating 'pork' population can be controlled. By eating Beef - brain won't develop. Good examples is in your front. Be Vegetarian - your mind works sharply.

What a hypocrite Langoolacharya? You are sitting in USA and asking Indian Government to ban something? Why you didn't ask to ban chicken as well? We will ban pork and beef and will send the same to you. Is it OK? Seems that you are not Langoolacharya..you are a langoor..

Good decision from the Maharashtra Govt. But it is difficult to eradicate this completely as maharashtra is very populated state. Many of Mumbai policemen are the one's who need this, most of the time. You can see them on duty on the roads using it in a stylish way.

I do not see a point in banning the sale of Gutka. Let the people themselves decide what they want to buy and use(it's not a narcotic drug as such).

But a law to ban spitting on the footpaths, public transport, public property etc. will serve the cause.

people who consume gutka can enjoy it at their own house. or carry a spit box wherever they go.

Very nice decision.. But they should ban alcohol also.. If a person drinks alcohol he make all illegal things such as rape, beating wife, firing general public etc., which is more harm than cancer..

Its better to educate people than banning the stuff as it causes revenue loss and at the same time give rise to illegal supply. Nothing could be banned unless the manufacturing itself is banned all in India. I have seen these stuff being sold in all most all Gulf countries in Indian shops even though it is banned in Gulf countries.

A good decision from the Maharastra Govt,a benfit to the mankind. Cancer is the main reason behind to ban these Gutkha and Paan Masala products.A awareness among those consumers is must and it's harmness to the human body totally.A complete Ban of all the companies who produce these kind of harmful products sure saves hundreds of thousands of people in India and also all over.

a great step indeed by mah. govt. walls, lifts, streets etc. will be clean. hope it comes to karnataka soon. many people would sit inside the bus eat such kind of materials and spit outside on the roads.many times theyve spit on bike riders and also on other people walking on the streets. for people to change govt. has to bring such rules.

IN MUMBAI THIS WONT WORK. THIS WILL NOT COME INTO EFFECT. MOST OF THE MUMBAI PEOPLES ARE PAN GUTKA LOVERS. THEY CAN'T STOP EATING THIS.

I WILL TELL YOU THE SOME ALTERNATE SCENARIO AND BENEFITS AND DISADVANTAGES:

1. NOW ALL SHOP OWNERS WILL CREATE ALTERNATE DOOR WHERE THEY CAN HIDE FROM POLICE.

2. SHOP OWNERS WILL KEEP THEIR GUTKA PACKETS IN SOME OTHER PLACES. SO THAT THEY CAN SELL EASILY.

3. POLICE PEOPLE GOT CHANCE TO GET HAFTA FROM ALL SHOP OWNERS.

4.I SUGGEST IF THIS COULD HAVE BEEN BANNED, THEN IT SHOULD BE FOLLOWED WELL STRCITLY.

5. SILENT PM SHOULD GIVE ORDER TO BAN THIS IN ALL OVER INDIA. IT IS GOOD FOR ALL AND ALSO HEALTH REASON.JAI HO.

As mentioned by Sunil, Whether banned or not, gutka and paan masala is availble to those using it, anywhere in the world.

There is a good distribution and sales net work known to ive people. However the ban is a good one theoritically.
