USA : 'Masala Dosa' Among Top 10 'Must-try' Dishes in the World

New York, Jul 8 (PTI): Popular South Indian dish Masala Dosa has made it to the list of '10 foods to try before you die', compiled by the Huffington Post.

The list, prepared by travel blog viator for the newspaper, includes dishes from around the world as a must-try for travellers.

Masala dosa features in the list alongside the Peking duck from China, BBQ ribs from the US and Teppanyaki from Japan.

"The plate-covering, paper-thin pancake is made from rice and lentils, cooked to lacy perfection on a hot griddle. What creates the more-ish flavor is a spiced concoction of mashed cooked potatoes and fried onions, served with a liberal dose of garlicky chutney," the website describes masala dosa.

The list also includes France's Escargots, which are actually snails generally eaten as an appetizer, served in the shell and cooked in a delicious melange of garlicky parsley butter.

Moussaka on the list is described as the Greek answer to the Italian lasagne. "The dish is made by smothering layers of ingredients in a cheese bechamel sauce, and baking until creamily melted and golden."

Other foods on the list are Zucchini flowers from Italy, Seafood curry laksa from Malaysia, Thai dish Som tam or green papaya salad and Pavlova from Australia-New Zealand.

"Sampling the local cuisine can help you make friends, understand the history, politics or religion of the place you're visiting and provide a lasting memory of your trip.

Food and travel go hand in hand, and there's no better way to delve deep into a destination than to try its most famous dishes," said the newspaper.

Yes Arun Udupi it was Kadandale Krishna Bhat of Woodlands hotel who invented the masala dosa & not the tamilians. For some I guess, South India means only Tamilnadu (Madras to be specific)

After going through all the comments so far, I think IDLI, DOSA from Madras(TN), amd Uthappa, Masala DOSA from Udupi(Karnataka}. Basically idli and dosa are SI dishes.
I remember one ad used to appear in Times of India, Mumbai (obituary/rememberance column on 30th March every year}, -In fond memory of Late Mr. A Rama Nayak {02.05.1902-30.03.1981)- THE MAN WHO BROUGHT UDUPI TO BOMBAY-
[by A.Rama Nayak & Sons, Matunga,CR}

Hence MD came from Udupi toBombay first then reached around the world. Anyway best wishes to it till our honourable MD reaches to the moon. So enjoy its aroma and BON APPETITE to all our readers.

@Harsha Malhotra, Udipi/New Delhi
Yes Mr.Harsha Malhotra,you may be right from your point of view.But in reality we being in the business right from our ancestors we know chemistry of food better than you.As you said according to Tamil Sangam Literature - Dosas available in 6 Century A.D.It is said Masala Dosas were available in 6 century A.D but it does not mean that originated from Tamilians.All have copied from Udipi/Mangalore.Anyhow why we need arguement.Forget about that and cherish the taste of Masala Dosa from whereever you get it with coconut chutney and Sambar.Wah yammy !!!!We will have constructive arguement on some other useful,valid and on top subjects.Why we have to break our head unnecessarily for filthy issues like this.In fact constructive arguement/criticization is good but not unhealthy,distructive arguement/criticization.May God bless you.Cheer up.

Dear Antony Arun..Goli Baje may not win contest against Masala Dosa but it wil give tough fight till the end. I am sure Masala Dosa can't knock out Goli Baje in one punch.Yes..at the end,Masala Dosa will win by PHOTO FINISH margin.It is just like people watch Tendulkar batting ,but remember Rahul Dravid...!!

Why argue over Masala Dosa's invention...just find a best restaurant and enjoy Masala Dosa...it does not matter who makes it, the taste matters...!

Mr.Evans Christopher Sumitra, Udupi/New York, USA

You might have surprise even 'Idli' belonged to Gujarat named 'Dhokals'. What told by Harsha is correct. It's already mentioned in Tamil Sangam Literature - Dosas available in 6 Century A.D. Krishna Mutta is of 13th Century A.D. Shivali Brahmins started to give-away dosa/vada as 'prasdham' in 20 century A.D.

One thing to be appreciated Dosas/Idlis made famous by 'Shetty's' - with some changes like including 'potatoes' inside 'dosas' and named it Masala Dosa. Utappa belonged to Tamilians. I do not like Dosas/Idlis more of prefer 'parothas'. I like 'Nayappam'. Just don't inform without knowing anything.

Origin of Idly, Dosa and Masala Dosa is from Mulky or Udupi.

Yummy Yummy MASALA DOSA. Whenever I go to Jackson Heights in Queens, New York, we must this delicious dosa.We have many restaurants in and around New York who serve this dish and each one is better than the other. Preetam Nath Ghayal. Masala Dosa may belong to Tamilians or Punjabis but UDUPI made it famous. Instead of appreciating it you are making useless comments. If you don't like it don't eat it.

jaimini P.B Sharjah, goli baje can't fight with masala dosa because it is bigger in size and quantity.Sensibly speaking masala dosa now has become tasty and also...... costly.Better plan one day advance to get it in good hotel in M'lore.Does'nt make any difference in US.

Harsha Malhotra, Udipi/New Delhi
Monday, July 09, 2012

Mr.Shekar Moily Padebettu, Udipi/India

How did you mentioned what inform by Preetam is incorrect. It's still not able to justify from where did actually 'Masala Dosa' originated from. Some source saying it's in 6 century A.D. itself Dosas are available in Tamil Nadu. Earlier even in Sri Krishna Mutt in Udipi Dosas/Vadas/Avalakki distributed as 'prasadham' after having Naivedyam and its banned earlier to commercialise. It's due to 'Shetty's' and 'Kamath's Dosas are introduced in other cities. Earlier hotel serving only 'Misal/Oosal'.

It's due to taste of coconut chutney's dosas become popular either it's masala or rava or utappam in mangalore. What said by Preetam is absolutely right. Somebody told it's of diana/welcome - you people do not have known exactly from it is - how you question others.

@Preetam Nath Ghayal you might have tasted Idli-Masala Dosa in Tamil Hotels.That is why your common sense about origin of Dosas favoring Tamilians.For your kind information origin of all those Dosa categories,Vada Medhu Vada,upma,sheera etc etc is Udipi/Mangalorean Hotels.They copied from Udipi/Mangalore Hotels and established those items in their cities.Usal Pav as you said is Maharashtrian food in reality but loved by all.Even I like it.Before commenting just use your God given common sense.Don't comment unnecessarily without knowing anything about chemistry of foods just get an advertisement of your name in the column.If you don't know anything,keep quiet and learn from others.

Masala Dosas are a hit among our modern post colonial citizens of tiny Goa. Restaurants like Udupi, Kamat and Manjunath were the first ones to introduce MDs here in Panjim, Vasco, Mapusa, Madgaon, Phonda, Sankhli and Dicholi. Nowadays very many Goan restaurants are introducing the MD culture. Masala Dosas, Iddli, Vada, Medhu Vada, Sambar, Chattni and Utthappa provide an all India look to our Goan eating culture.

When we were students during 1962 to 65 the tastiest Masala dosa we used get in Mohini Vilas opp Ganapathi High School, I still remember the old sweet days. Nowadays Masala dosa models are changing and new madels yet come. Modern Masala dosa's taste also varies compare to the olden days.In Kannada there is saying of poet Shri Kuvempu" aa kala vondagithu, divya thanagitu",Time that passed remains in us as a dream.

Reply to Preetam Nath Ghayal:
Dear Sir,
I totally disagree with your comments" Idli-Masala Dosa, actually belongs to tamilians ". You are wrong my dear. For your kind information, Masala Dosa has been introduced FIRST to this entire World by UDUPI. If you want confirmation, go to Google Web Site and type Udupi Masala Dosa, you will find that " Udupi is the First city introduced Masala Dosa to this \World and no one else. Tamilians and other sates are simply following the foot step of Udupi Cook and even though, the Masala Dosa, Chutney, Sambar, Idli, Vada, etc. of Udupi cannot be fully up to Udupi standard. If you want, come to Udupi and visit Restaurants like MITRA SAMAG in Car Street, Diana Restaurant, Rasa Ganga, Ram Bhavan, to say a few and then go to any Tamilian Restaurants in Tamil Nadu or elsewhre, and compare the taste. Then, you will definitely agree with my comments and will enjoy the delicisous taste of Udupi Restaurant. Moreover,Udupi has got good name and fame all over the Country and the World too, and hence, every state in Inda, there is One Udupi Restaurant, this clearly shows what Udupi stands for. Simply, do not comment if you do not know the clear picture.

Mangalore-Udupi has one of the most diversified cuisines in the world. In such a small region(comparatively, we can find over a hundred dishes exclusive to Mangalore-Udupi. Reason: we have a multicultural dwelling here, like:
Bunts, Konkanis, Bearys and the list goes on. So if we actually have an exclusive Mangalore-Udupi restaurant, there would be more than 100 dishes in the menu :)
