Mangalore, Jun 22: The heap of trash dumped near St Antony's Home for the Poor, near Nandigudda Circle here, is causing inconvenience to residents in the surrounding areas.

Convienient empty space near the ashram makes this area an easy dump yard of construction material, used tyres, plastic items etc.

Currently, this mountain of waste is causing trouble to the residents. It is alleged that the corporation started dumping garbage and eventually the public also started throwing in trash, especially in the nights.

"We have caught many people red-handed throwing the trash, and warned them not to repeat it. We have also stopped corporation vehicles from dumping the garbage," said Jecintha, corporator. "Every year, I bring in a JCB and clean that area, but people continue dumping there," she added.

However, speaking to Daijiworld, Harish Kumar, commissioner MCC countered the statement, saying that the city corporation is not involved in any kind of dumping. "We have assigned the drivers to take the waste and debris to the Vamanjoor dumping yard.In order to escape from questions of people, the authorities blame MCC," he added.

In addition, he said that the unabated mounting of garbage in the city has become their major concern. "We have been putting efforts to stop dumping of waste on the roadside. We have spent a lot of money to clean the area, however some people still choose to dump, escaping the notice of residents. If it comes to our notice, we will take stringent action against the people," he informed.

Speaking to daijiworld, Fr Denis Moras Prabhu, vicar general and director of St Antony Home for the Poor, said that due to the concreting of the roads, there has been a steep rise in the level of road. Hence, the mud has fallen over the compound wall, and as a result the wall has collapsed.

During the monsoons, the inmates face a lot of problem as the rain water gets into the ashram. The stagnant water has become a habitat for breeding mosquitoes, causing epidemic diseases and foul smell disturbing the people who pass by. There are as many as 400 inmates, most of them mentally ill, therefore we require cleanliness in and around the area, he said.

"A minimum budget of Rs 4 lac is required to raise the wall, an amount which we would gladly spend on the welfare of the inmates instead," said Fr Denis Moras, adding, "We have raised the issue with the corporators and the MCC and have also submitted a written complaint to the DC which has yielded no fruit. The corporation did not apply their intelligence and goodwill during the widening of roads."

As N Frank said...Mangalore desperately needs a waste treatment plant. MCC and our MP / MLA 's lack spine to implement such necessity into action even in this modern age.
If gabage in the city is attended...all road sides should be cleaned and interlock should be laid for the beauty of city as Sharath pointed above.

Mahindra & mahindra have a workshop within the Seminary compound. It is they who are throwing these things like boxes of spare parts / upholstery/ plastic covers etc.The neighbours have complained many times but Mr.Santhosh Rodrigues is very arrogant and egoistic.

The DC must take criminal action.

Both the citizens as well as the Government is responsible for this dumping. MCC should keep a watch of this illegal dumping by the citizens and arrest them and also fine them. This way the dumping will stop by the citizens. Then it is the MCC's responsibility to stop dumping.

One can see in the photograghs waste generated from construction and home.
Irresponsible construction waste disposal is common in our city . If u can afford to renovate /build your house u should be able to dispose off the waste in a responsible manner. also, waste generated from homes should not be stored/thrown in wrong places-it is sheer laziness.Govt should not be held responsible everytime.Yes - the municipal councillors should renew almost all broken metal bins and round pipes with non metallic sintex type larger, sturdier one's.Of course about the people of Mangalore, that is us, less said the better . Very irresponsible is an understatement.punishment is the only cure - but how -in a nation where murderers go scot free ,throwing garbage in another's compound is a minor crime.

Here in this case only MCC officials can not be taken in to task.Coz to the best of knowledge they are doing their duties to the best of their capacities by providing Dust/Thrash Bins at all the nook and corner of the city. But general public to be blamed coz they are not bothered to put their garbage inside the Bins.

I have seen in many places people are so lethargic to put their thrash in the dust bin provided by the MCC.They throw their dust/thrash standing far from the place of dust bin there by spilling all over the road thereby making the road a nice place for mosquitoes breeding.Besides stray dogs are are taking the fallen thrash bundled in plastic bags and open it and spill again all over complete road making the place so filthy we have to close our nose while passing through that area.

As a citizen of the country we too must use our commonsense and utilize the Bins properly.Simply pointing fingers at others for our own mistake yield no result. Therefore gentlemen try to improve yourself, set your house in order first then blame others or officials/department concerned.

Mangalore needs a waste disposal plant, which converts trash into fertilisers, for agricultural purposes, and segregates plastic, steel etc for recycling.

Although the dumping of trash in Mangalore is a rarity unlike in metros, the city municipality should nip this practice in the bud. It is necessary not only to create civic sense among people, but also to enforce the practice without any leniency.

Dumping garbage and waste materials in the road side or public places should be prohibited and to be banned.it is the duty of MCC to look into this matter and arrange things accordingly.A close vigilance from MCC in these areas, sure avoids the dumping of garbage or waste materials to an extent.

Sad but obviously true. No doubt some of our residents require civic education.
However given the usual practice of some commentators, I`m surprised no one has yet attributed this pathetic behaviour to Western Cultural influence.

The Municipality or the Corporation whoever is responsible for the road construction and also the public utilities must complete the project right in time. Road construction must be planned with pavement for all the citizens to walk with proper street lights. Cycle lane must be provided for bicyclist. As every citizen pay taxes to the government to live a better standard of living. The government officials are servants of each and every citizens. The tax payers money must be used in a proper way to serve the citizens and future of their children. So it is the duty of the Government to first clear out the mess and put it in order and provide proper trash disposal units to every home to dispose their trash and the government employees must collect the trash once a week. Add the fees with the sewer tax. Then train the citizens how to maintain the city. Every citizen will become responsible when they pay a fee to dispose the trash. I Pray that elected officials learn and understand that they have a responsibility to work for the welfare of the people of the country to develop it and not destroy it. India will become a developed nation within a short period of time or it will never.

God alone knows how will our children survive if we destroy our mother in this way. why cant we inculcate hygeine , always thinking its the duty of the MCC to provide for dutbins, ok they are not doing their duty but why cant we take some extr effort n make sure we dump our garbage in a better place? Even in Hospitals where i work people throw sputum, pan packets pan mixed salive on the path Pathetic.leading to more microorganisms in the air.

Dumping garbage has become a serious issue in and around Mangalore. MCC and the the local corporators should take this matter very seriously and take serious action against the public causing this nusence. I have lived in many countries, but never seen this kind of unawareness by the public anywhere. Be a responsible citizen and keep your surroundings clean.

For a holistic approach around the orphanage area, Authorities must awaken from the deep slumber installing surveillance cameras, random day-night vigilance, imposing immediate heavy fine could be one of the option. Orphan aged people are generally deprived from the privileged society, their dear once... at least require a humanitarian, a gift of clean environment from the local residents and who are from far off, with the indiscriminate, invariant, stringent 'a must attitude' from the should be menace and pollution conscious MCC.

MCC's failing to maintain Sanitation and Environmental Health in it's jurisdiction is objectionable.St Antony Home for the poor, can video record of those who are dumping the waste in unauthorized dump yard.MCC...first adhere your set of rule before forcing to citizens.

Citizens’ responsibility is more here, we can’t expect everything from government. I have seen Mangalore (educated) citizens are less responsible towards clean city.
