Mangalore, Jun 16: After five years of thorough research and hard work, with a stable database of more than 6,000 blood donors, the pioneers of www.smsindia4blood.com made a formal announcement about the social initiative at press meet here on Saturday June 16.

The mobile and online service connects donors and those in need of blood, said Ananth Prabhu, a young engineer, who along with Parithosh Vyas has set up www.smsindia4blood.com, a social initiative aimed at fulfilling the need for blood, especially rare groups, and enhancing the blood bank system.

The donor has to first register on the website. A person in need of blood has to initiate the process by sending an SMS to a dedicated number. This SMS then does a realtime database search of people with that blood group, and prospective donors are informed with the details of the patient and their next-in-kin’s contact details. The donor can then call the person and proceed further, he explained.

This enables every citizen to utilize the system in case of emergency, Ananth Prabhu said. "In this venture, we raise funds through merchandise. Anyone who is interested in supporting our venture can order souvenirs such as T-shirts and coffee mugs with our logo on it. The entire amount generated by selling these items will go towards this cause’, Prabhu informed.

There are eight members in the advisory board providing full-time service, he said.

Raghavendra Shetty was present at the press meet.

To place a request for blood through SMS, one has to type SMSBLOOD (space) CITYNAME (space) BLOODGROUP to 56767500. For example SMSBLOOD MANGALORE APOSITIVE.

Smsindia4blood is an innovative concept and the significance of it is that it covers the whole country. This speaks of the vision of a few young persons who have launched this project. Blood is the only donation which when a donor gives “gives a part of his body”. What more can one give to his fellow human beings. Can there be a better donation than “part of a body “. The list of names registered with smsindia4blood almost amounts to a mobile blood donors list since the donor will be at the beck and call of the needy who can be contacted via mobile phones. An excellent project and it should motivate our young Indians who are tech savvy to get themselves registered so that they can respond to the call of smsindia4blood. I wish smsindia4blood all the best.

I hope youngsters will learn from this group, that service to community is much greater than just going after monetary rewards.

I was in need of blood, a few months ago, and when the hospital, did not have it in store, it was great feeling, when friends and well wishers, contacted one another, and provided the required blood in time.

No words of thanks or appriciation is sufficient to thank those, who help find blood to the one's in need.

On behalf of team SMSINDIA4BLOOD, I thank Daijiworld for covering this press meet. I would like to stress on this point - SMSINDIA4BLOOD is not owned by me, or Paritoshji or the advisory committee.. Every INDIAN owns this website!! Coz, it is designed with a motto - FOR INDIA, WITH INDIA. I believe, if we are all united, together we can make a difference.” What we are is Gods gift to us and what we become is our gift to God”
