Mangalore: Accidents in City - Time to Ban Parking on Roadsides?

Mangalore, Jun 16: Accidents within the city limits have become a common phenomenon of late. Though it is not a new thing, it is matter of concern that there are new reasons why fatal accidents take place on the city roads, where speed of vehicles is relatively less.

One cannot forget the two accidents that took place in the city on June 4 and 6, which claimed two precious lives. One was near Milagres Church, an accident between a bike and a bus, on June 4 that led to the death of Yashwin Shetty from Shaktinagar.

The other one was near Shivbagh, on June 6, an accident between a bike and a lorry, that killed Eustuse Mendonca from Kulshekar.

If we compare the two accidents, a glaring similarity stares us in the face.

Eyewitnesses in both cases said that the accidents were due to other vehicles parked beside the road. In both cases, it can be observed that the roads are very narrow and in addition to that, the vehicles are allowed to park along the sides of the roads.

When there are vehicles parked beside the road, it is quite obvious that the driver’s attention is diverted towards the vehicles and he changes direction to avoid colliding with the parked vehicle. At the same time he will not be aware of the vehicles on the other side, which in turn leads to accident, like in these two cases.

Traffic police seems to be least bothered about this issue. At least with these sorts of incidents taking place, police should take measures and designate such narrow roads as no parking zones. This is specially needed on concreted roads, which have dividers and no extra space on the sides, and where provision is made for only two vehicles to pass on the same side at a time. The need of the hour is to make elaborate arrangements for parking in the busy and narrow roads in the city, but the million dollor question is of availability of space and willingness of the authorities to implement such a rule.

I do not agree fully with the fact that no parking should be implemented on all roads- the MCC must mark out the lanes for driving and the side of the road for parking so that the public is aware. I must ask about the setback that new buildings are forced to comply with in lieu of the setback they are given FSI as per the Rules. However, I cannot understand how the shopkeepers of these buildings demarcate the road by way of their shops "as only for customers of....." go along KSRao Road and see for ourself. Go to Kadri Junction and see what happens in front of KFC/ Wine shop-I parked my car there once to go to the bank opposite only to return and find that two tyres had been deflated (with the watchman grinning at my predictament as he had told me earlier that where I had parked on the road was private parking of the two shops).
Without proof of the culprit what was the purpose of calling the police???

ALL THE BLAME SHOULD BE ON MCC. HOW DO THEY GIVE PERMISSION TO BUILD COMMERCIAL COMPLEX WITHOUT GIVING ADEQUATE CAR PARKING SPACE ? GREEDY BUILDERS AND GREEDIER MCC OFFICIALS HAND IN HAND HAVE CREATED THIS PROBLEM AND SO MANY DEATHS. ALL BUILDINGS WITH MEZANINE SHOPS MEANT FOR CAR PARKS TO BE DEMOLISHED AND CAR PARKS TO BE PROVIDED TO COMMERCIAL COMPLEX. AND DEMOLISHED SHOP OWNERS SHOULD GO TO MCC AND CLAIM FROM THEM.

IN MANGALORE WE HAVE 2 LANES AND SOMETIMES 1 AND HALF LANE AND ON THAT ROAD CARS ARE PARKED. CAN YOU DRIVE SAFELY ??

WE CITIZENS OF MANGALORE ARE TO BLAME AS WE ARE NOT AWARE OF THE FSI THAT IS GRANTED TO COMMERCIAL COMPLEX AND FSI THAT IS KEPT FOR CAR PARKS FOR THAT SAME COMPLEX.

AWARENESS, JAGO BHAI, AND HIGHLIGHT ISSUES AND THEN MCC WILL STOP OR ATLEAST ARE AFRAID TO GIVE LICENCE TO SUCH COMMERCIAL COMPLEXES.

EVEN IN RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS, CAR PARKS ARE ALLOTTED AS PER PLAN. THEN IN BETWEEN, THE SAME CAR PARKS ARE SOLD TO OTHERS FOR BUILDING HOUSE OR SHOP

AND WHO HAS THE TIME AND ENERGY TO BELL THE CAT ? SO KNOWING THIS MCC AND BUILDERS ARE HAVING GOOD TIMES.

As individuals, we lack respect for another individual on the road. We tend to convince ourselves that we are correct at all times and lack the grace to admit that perhaps the other person maybe right. It is our mentality and our outlook towards another human being that needs a change and IF AND WHEN that happens, we wont need a ban on any parking vehicle and all that.

Cars and the car owners have become a big Menace second in line we can blame the bus drivers. The car owners assume that they own the roads since they pay road tax, and park on the footpaths which is meant for the pedestrians. Last but not the least we have to blame the POLICE since they do not tow the vehicles the car owners make the best use, the police say that the car owners complain that the car is damaged when the car is towed.

No doubt parking of vehicles on Public Roads contributes to accidents. Stats show more accidents are the result of Unroad worthy vehicles Drunken / Rash and negligent driving, Lack of Road sense, arrogance specially from the illiterate drivers of Buses & Lorries, issue of driving licenses without proper tests (It is only in 3rd world countries that DL's are available even without a proper Test) poorly designed roads, lack of footpaths specially in Mangalore, pedestrians have to fight for space along with four legged creatures (Holy Cow included) and the chaotic traffic. Things will never improve under a Corrupt Government . RTO and Police. Bottom line each one for himself and lack of commitment to implement the rules by the concerned. Indeed as many readers mentioned, people who have driven abroad specially in the US / Western countries, sorry to hurt sentiments of those against "Western Culture" - Main culprits where human error is the cause are the Illiterate Drivers who think and act as if the Roads are a racing track .. with a few pegs down to give them the false confidence it may well be so ...

Our traffic problum is created by MCC & our traffic police. Zero knowleged.They alert only when VVIP are visiting Mangalore. Our traffic police are not worried about parking,but they are worried only about those who by mistake enter oneway road.Demolish all basement shops and provide parking which place is ment for parking.Most of the collage bus park on the road only.If police vehicles park properly then public will follow them.

Now a days half the road is filled with parked vehicles and half is left for moving vehicles. Roads all over Mangalore is too narrow but number of vehicles are increasing day by day, thanks to the vehicle loans people are getting without any problem. There are many houses without parking place, still owning 2 to 3 cars parked outside on the roads.

I failed to see a single decent pedestrian foot path in above picture. Most of the roads in Manglore can be provided a proper foot path. Mostly footpath area is obstructed by shrubs, garbage bins or dump areas. There is a lack of knowledge on the need of it. Our people reps (MP/MLA), MCC officials lack will power and desire to provide better living amenities to the citizens. Police are not efficient to address this situation. As the days pass by...it is going to be worst. It is still not too late to acquire road side area to provide broader roads and safety! Provide paid parking lots in each street at regular distances, concerned need to learn the importance of road discipline, healthy and broad roads.

High time. The authorities concerned have not stipulated parking place conditions at the time of sanctioning building licences. Vehicles have, hence, come to be parked all over the places. Bigger the vehicle, bigger the problems for the pedestrians and other law abiding motorists.

How I wish, we had a Dr. Kiran (crane) Bedi who drove some sense into the wrong parking people in Delhi.
The situation in Mangalore is alarming. It is sure to get out of hand shortly. A visit to Car Street, Don Bosco Road (connecting lBalmatta Road with Falnir Road), Mannagudda - Alake Road, Nireshwaly Road will prove this, if at any evidence is needed.

Parking vehicles on the free flow road could be one of the reasons for many accidents. However, pedestrians are exposed to high risk of getting brushed by the running vehicles due to the absence of walkways. With the widening of roads and designing them to two ways, no pedestrian side walks constructed anywhere in the city. Earlier, there were, at least some space on either sides of the road for people to move, but with the up-gradation of roads, authorities have completely forgotten the public's safety. Mangalore is still far away from the good roads and safety of both pedestrians and motorists.

Parking on the roadsides is not a crime but where and how you park it matters the most.It is sometime the attitude of the people itself it matters the most.It is always said "live and let others to live". A Proper signboards on the roadsides is added advantage from the traffic depts. and to the public also.The wrong parkings and even the wrong drivings, a penalty with strict warnings will improve much with a less workload to the traffic police itself.We hope the traffic police will come up with new plans within the city to cope with the problems of parkings as well as the increasing traffics itself.

I will request Traffic Police put fine who parking thier vehical on road. also mcc make proper place for parking and keep parking fee less then all are able to park there vehical on parking place only.. take some parking technics from Dubai RTA.RTA parking area superb.. also RTA not giving DL to who dont no park vehical also. i will request Daijiworld put Dubai Parking Photos on thier website, Then MCC will get idea..

OMG the very next moment i hear lot of horn honking behind & my side and people stare at me like I have done big sin!!! Pedstrians give me a strange look and still strugle to cross as others never allow them to.!!!

Dear readers /public we blame each other keepig the recent incidents in our minds.What we need is a plan.When you do roads plan for parking.When you plan for parking thik of people who walk.So need of walk ways.In India If some one wants to make a small cut on the road to lay a wire/cable the permission is given quickly.The authorities will never ask the person to re built the road or put asphalt .The road remais open for years.It is the system that the authorities follow.
Basically the MP/MLA are chosen with no basic qualification.Any projects in India the party who awards the contract will only bothered how much they will get as commision.Well we will take aother 100 years to reach other contries stadards.Do we have drivig standards / From where road stadards will come.Till today RTO will ask to put the hand outside the door to signal the rear vehicle that the car is going to stop.Well we have cars now with all type of indicators.The bottom line here is The System.Ji ho Hindustan

Dear readers,Its true that road side parking is the cause. But whom do you blame? Public? Police? MCC for illegal parking? well these guys busy making BIG time money,too corrupted! Look at the highway driving,its hell out there, scary to drive even at day time, unpredictable and no guarantee of return home.Also during summer we suffer heavily due to helmets, Why no helmets on the highway where the real protection needed, than to wear them in the city where the driving is at snail pace? Sweat and anguish, fluctuation and humidity? adding to this our Traffic police make our lives more miserable. I don't see any hope of improvement,And now the tint of the cars is gone..wonder how we will be coping the rising temperateness during summer? I wish to request the Law makers and Politicians who make this laws and put them in the car and drive in the city for a day. Jai ho,

During the past three months the number of deaths due to road accidents in twin districts Udupi,Mangalore and also neibouring Kasaargad is alrming.The number might have crossed one hundred.It was no so in earlier days.During the onset of monsoon usually accidents do occur due to slippery roads every year.Reasons for spurt in accidents and deaths may be attributed mainly due to
1.Increase in vehicles on roads in many folds.
2.Youngsters taken to driving unmindful of accidents an its repurcussions.
3.Careless driving,flouting road rules culminating in overspeed
Most of the accidents occur due to careless dring.Driving consuming alcohol is a threatening reason in most of the accidents.
RTO/police should be strict in imementing road rules and routine checks are to be made compulsary and offenders should be penalised without any mercy.
This may bring remarkable change in road/vehicle dring behavior.

“Parking on the roadsides should be completely banned”, I partly disagree with that statement. Parking should be banned where there is no space for parking.
Parking is a need of basic infrastructure which is totally lacking in Mangalore because it is not a planned city or they have not planned it well. Now year 2012 this city can not bare the load of traffic it has, what will happen in year 2022??
As said, if all the roadside parking is banned, we expect only moving vehicles on Mangalore city roads. What is the purpose of having own vehicles? Even if we find parking somewhere far, then we will have to take autorikshaws or city buses to reach our destination. Solution to this parking problem should have started long ago anyway, if administration can not find proper solutions, this city will have pathetic time in near future.
Btw, accidents happen not because of the cars parked on the roadside. But, it’s because of mere negligence, rash driving, lack of knowledge of driving and finally BAD DRIVING.

For blame whom to start with!! Let me say about myself…before reaching a place where it made me fail 4 times to get license ,I used to laugh with friends back in India with proud saying I dint go to driving school still I learnt driving ,I got license just by RTO officer watching me driving down the building from his window!!
Yes, I fight with all the offenders now when I drive back in India saying what uncultured drivers!!When I stay back in jammed roads, waiting for my turn..i see all other buses, auto, two wheelers cross me without caring for discipline I just make a annoyed gesture to drivers ..i can’t help it ..i just wish I be traffic police that moment! When my parents sitting next to me say..you to go follow them! I make them quite by saying all rules and regulations which I learnt while failing 4 times!!
I wish I be the CM/PM and change every corrupt system..as I am influenced by some movies! haha ..i know its just a dream don’t mind…!what if al of us dream so..!.I got opportunity to see other part of world and have little knowledge on how road safety works! Else may be even I would have been responsible or victim for some stupid accident!

I agree with the author that unauthorized parking is the cause for the accidents. Recently the the Bejai New Road was made with the interlocks and no place has been left for pedestrian. Now as the road is flat parking is done on either side of the road during day and night time. The two way road has become a one way and the vehicles have to move in the narrow pathway left by the parked vehicles on either side. Even there is no proper walk way for people to walk. As lot of children and elders walk on this road, the parking of the vehicles is a reason for worry and hope that there are no accidents.Similar is the case with the main road running from Bejai church towards KSRTC/ Lal Bagh circle and here also vehicles are parked haphazardly ,It is time the corporation authorities take actions at the earliest.

Its the chalta hai attitude of us Indians , that leads to all this. when we dont have a car we curse the person who has parked on the narrow road n pedestrians have to walk on dirt, when the same peadestrian buys a car he is the first to park on the road. This is our culture nad its not going to change. i cant imagine we doing this in any foreign country.
