Moderate Intensity Tremors Rock Kashmir

Srinagar, Jun 11 (IANS): Two tremors of moderate intensity rocked the Kashmir Valley Monday morning. No loss of life or damage to property has been reported so far, according to Met office here.

The epicentres of both the quakes were located in the Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan, said Sonam Lotus, director of the local meteorological office.

"The first quake occurred at 10.32 a.m., measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale. The coordinates of this quake were 36.7 degrees north and 69.9 degrees east," he said.

"This was followed by another quake, which occurred at 10.59 a.m., measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale. Its coordinates were 36.1 degrees north and 67.3 degrees east," Lotus told IANS.

Aamir Ali, who is in-charge of the disaster management cell here, said no loss of life or damage to property has been reported from anywhere in the valley.

Kashmir is an earthquake prone region, and in the past, earthquakes have caused major devastations here.

In 2005, an earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale killed more than 40,000 people on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir.

Roger Bilham, a US earth scientist, who carried out intensive earthquake studies in the region, has warned of a major earthquake in Kashmir which is "geologically already overdue".
