Bangalore Whizkids Develop Car that Delivers 240 km/litre!

Bangalore, Jun 11 (The New Indian Express): Tired and frustrated over the increasing fuel prices? A team of 11 engineering students claim to hold the key to unlock the door to more economical and happier drives.

Team Inferno from Sir M Visvesvaraya Institute of Technology (MVIT) has developed a prototype of a car which delivers a mileage of a whopping 240 km per litre.

Team Inferno is one of the 12 teams from India participating in the Shell Eco Marathon, scheduled to be held from July 4 to 7 at Sepang International Circuit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Their car, named Drona, will compete with cars developed by 150 other teams from Asia.

“We started brainstorming over this from September last year. The actual work on the car started in February. We were determined to develop a car that delivers a super mileage, which is one of the requirements of the competition,” said Avinash Hegde, a first year Mechanical Engineering student and a member of Team Inferno.

Drona’s prototype, as of now, can accommodate one person. The extraordinary mileage is achieved with a modified Bajaj engine, aluminium chassis, electronic fuel injection, aerodynamic design, direct transmission and other factors.

“The prototype has been developed with the competition in mind. We have not thought about factors such as suspensions as the tracks at Sepang are flat,” added Nischal Muralidhar, another Mechanical Engineering student.

The prototype uses glass-fibre reinforced plastic for its outer body and can race up to 60 km per hour. “The prototype is ready and will be on its way to Malaysia for the marathon. We have spent nearly Rs 2.5 lakh on this,” said Avinash.

Nischal added that this was not the last of Drona. “We know there is a great potential. With the help of sponsors, we are determined to come up with another version that can deliver better mileage in city conditions,” he said.

When BADAL car first came out they boasted that it gave 100 kms / litre. That was proved false.

Anyway I hope this new car will prove its worth as claimed.Congrats to the team.

By the way,
I was the one who designed the 2 - stroke engine for Bajaj, Akurdi, Poona, back in 1977.The engine is nick-named "Walters Engine"
The torque of the engine is not sufficient to be used as a car.
When I left to USA, Bajaj developed a 4-stroke version which was a disaster. The engine runs smooth but does not develop enough torque. Old timers still prefer my 2 stroke engine. I heard that they are using coconut oil as a lubricant in Kerala.
An organic oil can cause severe damage to the engine due to carbon build-up. Only a mineral oil can be used due to its properties.
Have a nice day all of you.

The way Drona looks, with the wind velocity couple of knots higher than normal, it can fly! Then the average would be 240

Wow great, but will it work on indian roads, after some years our engineers will be seen in USA, working for their companies.

I guess in India people are always and mostly concerned with the fuel prices. This is effecting even our bright and intellegent engineers who are not focusing on emerginging technology and scineces. Engineers are only trying reinvent the wheel which is sad and I feel they lack absolute guidence from the faculties. I dont want to deny credit for the superb work but i guess there is more to discover and invent which can change or makes lives of indians better.

Excellent Job By engineers, Similarly Economists should make similar research to bring back the fuel prices to Rs20/Liter.Who is ready to switch these kind Fuel efficiant cars.

Its wonderful that the team of young engineers did this feat not out of frustrations and tiredness but its out of sheer intelligence.
Gasoline prices are up and down but the state govt are not interested in reducing their vat which is of utmost concern and which is spiralling the prices in the states for petrol. So the state govt should and must reduce the vat and bring the prices down as done in goa, delhi and chattisgarh

Why all our enginnering students are interested to experiment in Vehicles which are outdated technologies, some time back manipal students had come up with similar project. Engineers should focus on emerging technologies like 3D printing, Artificial Intelligence, etc
